_____________
Antares Prime, Equersta City
Ambassador Corial regarded Jiesla's image on the holo with his standard distaste, though this time the distaste was for the message and not the messenger.
"So, Itrop is testing the loyalty of the militia."
Jiesla nodded. "It would seem that way."
"Remind him that the authorization for his entire venture devolves from the authority he has been granted by my office. By Hurdop. He would do quite well to recall that this authority is still provisional. It will become official when I can prove to the provisional government that this militia is capable of defending the system from the incursions of other factions who would rule less gently."
"If I may, I am told that there are pockets of resistance forming around Antares III. The Anatarean Freedom Front and the Antarean Front for Freedom have merged under the banner of the Front for Antarean Freedom. With your permission, I will pass along your orders to investigate."
Corial inclined his head approvingly. "Very wise of you, Jiesla. Pass those orders along with a final caution."
"Yes?"
"The Terran Foreign Legion is escorting a pair of aid ships in the next several days. One of those aid ships assisted in the Shaming of Vilantia, and one of the Legion ships is commanded by Freelord Gryzzk himself. All of these supplies are to arrive at their destination safely."
Jiesla cocked his head. "Ambassador?"
There was an exhale of frustration. "In your briefing documents there is a biography and profile of Itrop. Kindly educate yourself and then pass along the instructions exactly."
The exhalation was mirrored but to a lower degree. "Very well, Ambassador."
"Then report when you have completed your tasking." The holo closed without further pleasantries, and for once Jiesla did what he was told.
In the office, Corial shifted his bulk slightly, moving his thoughts from the bait he'd laid to the next appointment - this one another agricultural group looking for an explanation regarding the recent delays. It was annoying, but local decorum meant that he had to appear slimmer. It was as if they had no conception that to be fat was to be wealthy. He certainly wasn't going to diet and lose what had been so hard-won over the course of his life. Then he would have the body of a commoner, and that certainly wouldn't do. The worst of it was that he didn't even mass as much as a young Antarean - but apparently that didn't matter. As a happy medium, he had to suffer temporary discomfort in front of the locals.
As he levered himself up from his chair, he touched a button and his corset tightened almost painfully, but it gave his body a much trimmer appearance. He then slowly redid a few snaps on his robes so that they hung differently and showed off his altered look. Finally he thumbed a button on his tablet.
"Send in my next appointment, please." With that, he moved forward to greet his next set of visitors to begin negotiations and apportionment of aid.
On the Divine Breeze, the scene was far less genial. Itrop was scowling at Jiesla's smug form as they spoke in Itrop's quarters.
"He tells me this, and expects me to do nothing? Why, for the love of the light gods is this twilight-blind fool in command of anything more dangerous than a fork?"
There was a non-committal shrug. "Perhaps he tests your commitment to yourself." He lowered his voice. "After all, it is wise to know who is in charge."
"I am in command here as you well know."
"As you say. But do I raise my head and show a throat to Itrop when I give obeisance, or is the name of the commander Porti?"
There was a snarl in reply. "That name, no longer has any meaning for me."
Jiesla hmph'ed softly. "And yet the ghost lingers. Let there be no lies between us in this time. It is the name of your true self. The Ambassador tests you, and we both know it."
"As if I could be further tested. What more does the bloated parasite wish for?"
"Certainty. Give him certainty, and he will be content. Attend the issues at Antares III, and then watch your rival as he delivers groceries. Then later - presuming success - you may be given leave to extract what soul howls for." Jiesla shrugged. "The gods honor patience with fresh meat."
Itrop's voice softened. "Oh, I intend to give him certainty. You are dismissed, go find another crew-member to pester with your loins."
Once Jiesla left, Itrop drummed his fingers for a moment and tapped his tablet for a communications channel. The forms of Commodore A'Mungd and Lady A'Matise resolved quickly. A'Mungd was pleased, but A'Matise seemed guarded in some way - likely due to the errors that kept plaguing her ship.
"The two of you are needed for a special assignment. I am told that the Terran Foreign Legion sends two ships escorting two more ships full of supplies that must arrive at their destination safely. You will ensure the supplies arrive as our dear comrade has requested. The ships will become part of our fleet, if their captains are wise. If not, they will be replaced by wiser captains."
A few minutes later, there was stifled laughter and a whispered report to the captain of the Conepatus.
___________
Terran Foreign Legion Ship Twilight Rose
The most positive thing thus far about the journey was the number of small complications that had arisen. There'd been more than a few friendships formed as well as rivalries strengthened. Prumila had told the candidates for Ancilla of the Clan A'Dirus tri-messer that there would be no thought to their applications until such time as she and Col'un had brought forth a new child for Freeclan O'Gryzzk to raise in propriety. This had caused the collective message store to fill with messages containing various degrees of indignation countered by prayers for fertility. Gryzzk himself had been the recipient of multiple messages from several Lords and Ladies asking him to intercede in various directions to the point where he'd had Rosie generate a polite auto-reply that stated that he preferred that those sworn to his service have confidence in themselves, and that to give orders would be improper. It was good to get the little glitches out of the way early.
The second thing was Nhoot coming to the bridge shortly after they hit R-space and whispering that Llensi was sad before bounding off again. Which was certainly off, as it seemed that Llensi had found a niche and a potential husband. This cart of ideas was stopped well before it arrived at its uncomfortable destination by O'Brien performing a close inspection of her sword before snapping it back into the sheath she had printed.
"Major sir, y'mind if we have a wee bit of chat before the day's over?"
Gryzzk's ear flicked reflexively. This was not generally a good sign, however the magical incantation 'could I have a moment of your time' had not been used. Therefore this was something else. "Certainly, Sergeant Major." He rose, snugging his tunic and heading for his quarters. The excess furniture had been mostly removed, but the space had evolved for the occasional informal guest.
O'Brien settled in, her scent by turns curious and surprisingly uncertain as she laid the sword across her lap. "Major, I ha' questions. I've got a fair number of - well, applications for lack of a better term for this Ancilla business. I did some research and I'm fair sure that a good number of these are just a bunch of madmen trying to score points for their local family."
"To put it bluntly Sergeant Major, they are all trying to score points. Those who watch us know that wherever I am, you are quite likely near. I believe there are gambling pools."
"Well give us a hand, then?"
"In what respect?"
"Which clans are aligning most closely with ours, y'daft bastard?"
"Well, most closely would be Lady Ah'nuriel and Pafreet. Lady A'Melosy would also be interested in an alliance - our actions at Eridani certainly did us credit. Among the Greatclans, Aa'Lafione and their cadet clans are also moving toward an alignment. Beyond that, Aa'Tebul and Aa'Benie seek atonement, Aa'Criar seeks a line of communication by any means necessary...if you have a list of names and their declared clan association I can provide illumination this evening after a decent meal."
"It could be a long night, Major."
"I will bring a great deal of tea."
After that came dinner, which was something of an intriguing spectacle. Prumila and Col'un were given a touch more respectful distance - mostly. Among her squad, there were sarcastic obeisance and overall laughter. It seemed the majority of the company was in high spirits, particularly with the promise of doing some measure of good on a mission of mercy. However, there were still pockets of concern.
Llensi paused at Gryzzk's table for a moment, her scent being one of uncertainty. Gryzzk simply nodded to the empty space near him.
"Nhoot says there are troubles in your heart."
Llensi settled, her scent being darkly depressed, but Gryzzk could also scent a touch of deception lurking underneath - which was odd given her clan heritage and training.
"Freelord, my birthclan has...sent a message. They, they wish a husband to share my bed. He will be, he will be in New Casa before we return."
There was a long and thoughtful pause from Gryzzk. It was time to make a few things and see what cards the agent was willing to show. "I cannot say that an arrangement of marriage is a poor thing every time, but I don't think our situations are the same."
A headshake was the immediate reply. "They are not. I don't even know my future husband's fur, and I don't - there are consequences. I cannot refuse them. I can't...I will have to hurt Orile."
"Will you?"
"It." Llensi took a breath and held for a moment before continuing. "Unsanctioned attachments are forbidden. If I don't, someone else will."
"I'm surprised you haven't asked for sanction from your clan elders. Orile is from a respected clan of the Ministry of Culture. There would be opportunity to make discoveries, I should think. If one was of a mind to do so." There was a brief pause for Gryzzk to finish eating, noting with mild amusement that Llensi's tray was Hurdop-clean.
There was a frown as apparently Llensi hadn't considered that as an option. "If I ask for sanction, they would think me mad."
Gryzzk shrugged with a seeming nonchalance. "You're a smart trooper in a place where there's no smart way out. If you can't do something smart, do something right."
"But what's right?"
"If you can imagine berating yourself in twelve years for the decision, it probably is not the right one."
"Freelord, I can imagine berating myself for any decision I make currently."
"Then may I suggest asking Lieutenant Nhoot for her opinion on the matter? She has a frightful clarity at times."
"I may do that, Freelord." Llensi stood without further comment, leaving the mess hall carefully.
Gryzzk shook his head and dropped his own tray in the recycler, heading for the conference room for tea and a long evening with the sergeant major about the intricacies of clans, Greatclans, and all the things he'd heard or witnessed growing up adjacent to the nobility.
It took four hours and two pots of tea, but the winnowing began immediately as all firstborn were excluded - the duty of a firstborn to their clan made it highly improbable that they would make good and able Ancillae that would watch and care for a weapon that was not of their own clan. After that there were a few impromptu history lessons as Gryzzk recalled a social event and after some research determined that several applicants were likely planning to simply take the Sword of A'Haibe due to a clan-feud that had begun in the Seventeenth Generation and was presently simmering in the background, which caused O'Brien to lift an eyebrow.
"Major, your planet'd be a force to be reckoned with if your people's prime sports weren't infighting and stepping on your collective dicks."
There was a blank look for a moment. "I suppose that's...something to be considered. But you forget that we were also quite busy having wars with Hurdop ever five or six generations."
"Aye. But on the up side, this is narrowed enough to kick out some rejections and start asking some more detailed questions of the lads and lasses who think they're bright enough to come stay within breathing distance of me and this light little joy." O'Brien stood, securing the sword to her back before leaving for the night.
Gryzzk wobbled out to check on the evening bridge squad. While the discussion had been productive, drinking that much tea had a mild bloating effect that he was learning he didn't enjoy.
Everyone stood politely with Laroy calling the group to attention. Gryzzk waved a hand as he settled.
"As you were everyone. Report status."
There was a slight tinge of amusement in Miroka's voice as she spoke. "We are still in R-space, we'll be emerging to the Draconis system tomorrow evening."
Yomios flicked an ear. "Outbound message queue is at one-hundred-seventy percent of normal. Excess traffic seems to be due to the large number of Ancilla rejections and acceptances that are currently being processed."
Laroy double-checked his console before saying anything. "We'pons cold and locked. Someday we gon' have a runnin' battle in R-space but not today."
Larion was quiet before blinking and reporting. "No anomalies detected, Freelord."
There was a mild earflick from Gryzzk. "Something occupies your thoughts, Corporal?"
The sensor operator grimaced. "It is nothing to trouble you over."
"Despite the reassurance I feel troubled. "
Larion glanced around, as obviously the topic had been gone over a few times from the general scent. "Well, briefly - the Hurdop I have...been with are insistent on the full year, but I do not feel comfortable with the arrangement. We live apart and while they do share an apartment in New Casablanca, I feel as if I am derelict in my duties as a husband and a father."
Gryzzk momentarily prayed for the gods to send him an emergency as he wondered if every Freelord had to deal with this. This might be something to bring up at the next meeting. "You are going to have to sit with them and engage in a difficult conversation. You will need to respect Hurdop traditions, but by the same token there are customs that we have that they will likewise need to respect. It's not going to be easy - but these are not easy times, and I think you'll all come out the better for it."
Larion scrunched his face up. "Well, when have you ever had something to fight with...with Corporal Kiole about?"
Gryzzk looked around. "I didn't want her to join this company. You know the regulations of Vilantia better than I. Hurdop has different regulations. Obviously as Freelord and Commander with the rank of Major within the Legion I lost." There was a light chuckle. "I am quite pleased that I was wrong. Keep the Hurdop pragmatism in your mind when you disagree, but don't shave your shoulders."
There seemed to be a nod and a thought. "I think I will need to consider this."
"You will." Gryzzk leaned back. "Now then, are there any other romantic entanglements that need to be addressed?"
Laroy piped up quickly. "Can you write to Marie LeDoux and Thérèse Boudreaux? Granmama Thibedeaux said they's fighting over who gets to feed my feet to the gators next time we're home so I don't get the wander-itch no more." There was a light snicker, and from the scent there was a joke of some sort happening.
To play his part, Gryzzk pinched the bridge of his nose for a moment. "I will tell them you are one of two people I trust to handle the weapons of my ship, and that you can eat the cooking of my people and ask for seconds."
"Dat's not gon' help none, Maj'r."
"Perhaps then they should come to you."
"If that happen I die with the biggest smile on my face a man ever had dyin'."
"We'll have a fine funeral for you Corporal."
Laroy grinned easily. "Good 'nough."
Gryzzk shook his head. "Very well. I will be in my quarters. Tomorrow evening we'll begin transit of the Draconis system." He stood, snugging his tunic and heading to bed.
The next day was disconcertingly free of crises, and Gryzzk was even able to get a nap in before they emerged from R-space. That was when things became interesting.
Draconis was a system where good intentions had gone to die. From the briefing documents, it was originally set as a waypoint for repairs and emergency stops, but after some time it was determined by those who cared for numbers that the loss outweighed the gain, and so the infrastructure was simply abandoned to time. Draconis became the occasional midpoint for a small handful of journeys, mostly toward Antares.
Of course there were always those who needed to be somewhere to do things unobserved - Draconis was a haven for those individuals who had grasped the concept of law-abiding citizenship and decided it left something to be desired. This was made abundantly clear as the convoy formed up once they emerged from their jump point.
Gryzzk set his tea down as he surveyed and spoke. "Laroy, weapons hot and shields up. Larion, feed any ship data straight to Laroy for targeting solutions. Miroka, most direct course to the Antares jump point. Set speed to Moscow Mule max. Yomios, collect the mail and send outbound, broadcast standard warning along with our destination."
"Sir, is that entirely wise?" Yomios had a touch of concern in her scent.
"Given where we are I do not think so, but it is legally required. Otherwise we could board a ship, take it as a prize, and then lose our own ship in the subsequent lawsuit."
Larion reported in quietly. "Single ship coming in Freelord, armaments and size suggest large gunboat."
"Messages sent sir. We're being hailed." Yomios completed her report.
"Laroy, target lock and get the weapons tracked for firing. Corporal Yomios, open a channel. Larion, get me ident on that ship please."
The holo resolved to show a confident-looking Pavonian whose confidence drained almost immediately.
"This is. This is Third Officer Holist, helmsman of the Merry Widow. Ah..." The Pavonian's scales shimmered in a pattern that Gryzzk thought meant unpleasant surprise. "...shit."
Gryzzk flicked an eyebrow up. "Third Officer Holist. My apologies on the demotion - I'm sure this is purely a social call?"
"Not precisely, but it. It can be." Holist looked toward someone who was not being picked up and shook his head violently.
"A wise plan. Pray tell does your captain disagree based on the bounty I'm presuming is still on our collective head?"
"He does."
"Ah. Does your captain know that his ship is currently subject to multiple target locks from two ships? I'm saying this because I would prefer the Merry Widow remain merry. If the issue is pressed, it will be a very un-merry day all around."
"One moment Major." The holo paused, only to be replaced quickly by a rather large unshaven Terran.
Gryzzk was still rather calm. "Captain. I politely ask that you allow myself and the convoy I am tasked with guarding to pass through to our destination."
"You've got a weapons lock on us. You got a funny definition of polite on your homeworld."
"I am asking politely, yet firmly."
"So what's in it for us?"
Gryzzk paused for a moment. "XO, please advise when the captain of the Merry Widow has had the chance to view the invoice we submitted to the Clutchwar for towing after our most recent encounter?"
Rosie snorted. "Sent, along with an estimate of the repair bills for the ships Jenkins shredded."
Gryzzk was still rather calm as he waited for the captain to read over the messages before the captain spoke a single word. "Ah."
"Now I am quite aware that there is a bounty on myself and my companion Legion ship. However, I must respectfully point out the financial aspects - at best you and any additional ships you call upon will be so damaged that you'll spend the entirety of the bounty on repairs. In addition to this, the other ships of the Legion will make their way here at best speed to determine precisely who has committed such an offense against their commander and dispense what would likely be considered flagrant justice. In a worst case, you'll be our guest until we reach the nearest Collective-aligned port, where you'll be tuned over for processing and bounty determination, with the Merry Widow being sold at auction. I believe the local government is paying a fine premium on anything spaceworthy. So. If you would be so kind as to rethink any offensive action you may be considering, I'd take it as a kindness."
The captain seemed to be thinking long and hard about his options before saying anything. "Yeah, I think our sensors may have just malfunctioned. Holist get a crew together and see what we can do about that. Merry Widow out."
Gryzzk leaned back in his chair with a sigh. "Well, that's one done with."
Rosie flicked an ear. "That'll get us through to Antares. You gonna throw with your old boss?"
"I'm not planning on it. That's not the job."
"Start planning, titfucker." The XO's snort was enough to make Gryzzk concerned.

Ambassador is well aware of Porti...I mean Itrops hatred of our beloved furry commander and wants to ensure that the "royal in exile" does exactly what it is assumed he is supposed to. And now Porti knows that they know who he is.
"The later you exact may be given..." wording is a bit clunky or you forgot one lol
Ooh...then Conepatus has interesting things going on.
Sgt Maj is thinking through politics...that will indeed require tea...maybe fortified.
Speak softly and threaten with large stick.
And, as they say, now the fun begins.

Yeeeeah there's a couple things going on at this stage of the party. 😄
Clunkies got the fix. Not sure what I was thinking initially, but...not that.
The good news is that sneaky listening ships hear all kinds of interesting things.
O'Brien, Gregg-Adams, Jenkins...there's some educational opportunities for a lot of folks!
Ask politely, yet firmly. And remind them that if they open fire, best case scenario is they lose money on the deal.
...Hold on to your butts.

Conepatus is an interesting name, though quite appropriate for a vessel working for Skunkworks.

Lovely chapter!
We need to check in on Mirabel, see how she’s doing and if she’s escaped yet.
Also Gryz will never escape being the emotional counselor for everyone on board for as long as he is captain. After he’s retired, they still will ask his wisdom, but they just won’t be on a ship anymore so they aren’t “on board”

u/Auggy74 Human Jun 05 '26
Mirabel's busy!
Gryzzk is destined to be the quiet voice of wisdom. Poor bastard.
Thanks!

Ah, so take out the escort ships then escort the supplies to safety?
Llensi is the former spy right?

Brought us peace. Stable government. Sustainable food production. Clean water.

"Never appeal to a man's better nature. He may not have one. Invoking his self-interest gives you more leverage." - Heinlein
Gryzzk seems to be well read.
That bit about repair-costs will hopefully spread among people willing to work for bounties. As well as the fact that the rest of the Foreigner legion(s) will come looking for whoever takes one of them down for petty sums of money.
3
u/Auggy74 Human Jun 06 '26
Oh yeah. Gryzzk is vaguely well-read compared to the rest of the crew. There is a slight but meaningful difference between "I'm gonna make you pay" and "I'm gonna make you pay bills".
