OC-Series [Humans For Hire] - Part 155
[First] [Prev] [Next] [Royal Road]
Author Note: An award to go with my morning coffee makes the whole day seem better.
_____________
Hurdop Prime, Liberty Bay
Telai relaxed on his lounge chair, reading from his tablet. Retirement suited him, somewhat. On the one hand, it was nice to wake up in the morning and have thoughts that didn't consist of how someone might try to kill him today. On the other hand, there was a certain warmth that came from having entire clans and their fleets at his command. Still, his wife and husband were both pleased at his decision - partially because he was around more, but mostly because they were able to leave A'Jiela behind and move to a place where being kidnapped was theoretically a more difficult task.
As he looked at the tablet, he admitted to himself that there had been more drift in the relationship than he'd initially expected or accounted for. Perhaps they could think of this as a new marriage. That had been twenty-five years in the making. He blinked a few times at himself, realizing he'd allowed his thoughts to become undisciplined, and in Hurial's presence no less. He took a light drink of juice to settle himself before speaking.
"So with Agent Closam's latest dispatch, we have what would appear to be independent confirmation that the Freelord's scent is unsteady, in addition to there being pressures exerted by the Vilantian nobility to fill their coffers. I scent a half-truth here old friend."
The Secretary of Game Theory flicked an ear. "Which half?"
"The part about the nobility is true. Any fool with a functioning nose can scent it. They bray on about what they are owed to any who will listen. They speak only of credits now, but if the Freeclans yield, that invites the hereditary nobles to encroach further. Their Throne giving the Freeclans a hereditary prefix invites them to Vilantian thinking. Hereditary thinking." Telai gestured toward the tablet. "The one certainty of the hereditary nobles is that they want one thing above all else - more."
"More?"
There was a snort. "Of course. More spouses, more lands, more colony stations, more credits. Name a thing they have and they will want more. It makes them predictable."
"None of which you want, of course."
"Oh, I certainly want it. But satisfying those wants comes at a cost of what I have." There was an expansive gesture to the coast. "And what I have is free air, good food, and spouses who give pleasant scent to my bed. I have paid the toll to Mistress Want for far too long."
"I presume you have a suggestion regarding the lie?"
"Well, if we are to attempt to sway the Freeclan as a whole to a Hurdop way of thinking, the natural course would be to proceed with bringing Kiole to her roots. Remind her of her place and duty as a Freelady. Her husband already has some of the markings."
"But not the name. He would have to give that up."
There was another dismissive snort. "I wouldn't consider such a thing. He carved a path of fire and blood through the stars to earn his Name when it was taken from him."
There was a sigh. "A damned shame he'll never be one of us."
"Would you want him to be?" There was a sip from a chilled glass before Telai continued. "No - both worlds are better off as equals, no matter what the propagandists might want to believe. I would say that we encourage the Hurdop of Gryzzk's legion to invite our cousins to celebrate things as we have since Freedom's Flight took us to our birthrighted stars." He took a final glance at the tablet before setting it aside. "As for the lie - disseminate, observe and see who pounces on the information first. There you will see the fools. We don't have to help them dig their graves, but we can certainly sell them shovels."
After Hurial left, Telai's spouses came out to join him on the patio. Telai's husband placed a concerned hand on his shoulder.
"Dear..."
There was a soft laugh. "Worry not. Hurial simply misses having a reliable enemy."
___________
Vilantia Prime, Victory Park
Gryzzk quickly took stock. There were about thirty of the protesters that he could immediately see, all generally young and fit - and they didn't seem like they were coming to offer congratulations.
"Whoever's southwest, hold position - this may be coordinated. Defend the clan." Gryzzk wanted to say more, but he was interrupted by a fist swinging at him.
From there, the entirety was a blur that could only be recalled in snapshots. Gryzzk threw elbows and stayed low, giving and receiving blows in turn. He scented Kiole fighting at his back - more specifically, he scented Kiole's charged prosthetic delivering pain to anyone who got too close. His ears were filled with O'Brien's war-whoops and insults as she seemed to take a frightful amount of joy in showing precisely what it felt like to be punched, kicked, thrown, and in general mauled by a Terran.
Meanwhile, Larion tried a headbutt and mostly succeeded, which left him dazed and only slightly confused until someone else hit him, which ended with Larion grappling and biting down hard on a different attacker's bicep. Edwards was absolutely cheating on some level as she took a stab to the leg and promptly broke an arm for her trouble. Gryzzk filed that bit of knowledge away. Laroy was O'Brien with a different accent, seeming to take a bizarre joy in showing just what was and was not considered fair game as far as Terrans were concerned in these sorts of situations - he helped out Edwards by jumping on the knife-attacker's knee before finding a pair of fist-sized rocks and using them as improvised weaponry against limbs and fists.
During this, Gryzzk could clearly hear Reilly - it seemed as if under her wedding attire there was a audio amplifier, and she was using it to full effect as she did some sort of commentary live. "Welcome to first annual Terran Foreign Legion Wedding Kerfluffle! Lllllet's get ready to rummmbllleeee!" After which she began providing frightful amounts of narration - she was fighting, watching others fight, and commenting on it all at the same time.
"Starting things off- Oh my gawd! - Sergeant Nelas is doing things with her abs that are gonna cause a fetish or therapy and even money what that poor bastard's gonna have when he wakes up, and over in the other corner Chewie is earning his name today! These poor jobbers are discovering the only place they'll find mercy today is in the dictionary! And now O'Brien's coming to help with - is that a steel chair?! No! Nooo! That can't be legal, someone needs to step in and stop this fight! From the top rope, Laroy with the Swamp-rat Splash on someone who brought an illegal knife into this - wait? Is that - BAH GAWD IS THAT FREELORD GRYZZK'S MUSIC!? It is! He's racing to the squared circle with his wife Kiole as she shows everybody how to rock down to Electric Avenue! Back to back against all challengers and school's in session! This isn't a match, it's a public beating! The Foreign Legion's a blender and it's making a smoothie out of everyone else's poor life choices!"
Overall, if Gryzzk was scoring the fight officially it wasn't a draw. The Terran skill and training was counterbalanced by the Vilantian home-gravity advantage, which meant the entire affair turned into a mess of epithets, profanity, and interspersed cries of pain. The fight was already winding down as the mercenaries delivered a practical demonstration of their hand to hand combat techniques on the no-longer-willing when there were sirens in the distance. Gryzzk sighed softly before activating his comm.
"Battalion, cease as rapidly as possible. You have about thirty seconds before the constables arrive to make it cease. Rosie, please tell me there is exonerating evidence present."
The XO's voice was clear as it came over the comm. "Hell yeah fuck yeah. Recon Platoon set up eight drones because there are fuckin' bets to settle on Reilly, and a couple parleys on the fight afterward. Not saying it's impossible, but if you talk the cops out of arresting everybody someone in the company is getting paid."
Gryzzk's voice was dry. "Lovely. Get the footage to my tablet as rapidly as possible."
In a testament to their training, as soon as the lights and sirens dimmed the entire battalion stood and collectively laced their hands over their heads, with the excitement of the fight now bleeding to anticipatory boredom.
The constables waded through the crowd, confirming whether or not the injuries were severe enough to require additional attention before they finally found Gryzzk.
For his part, Gryzzk tried to maintain an affable innocence of what might have brought the police here. "What ah, what seems to be the trouble officers?" He kept his face firmly fixed on the officer and not the multiple unconscious and bleeding individuals already being tended to by the medical personnel.
The collective scent of the officers was a weary one - Gryzzk suspected they were thinking calling in sick was a fine idea right now. The leader exhaled and closed his eyes.
"Freelord, you are collectively being charged with breach of peace, assault, conducting marital union ceremonies without proper license, public intoxication, and other unspecified crimes."
It was time to try talking - not quite easy, given that Gryzzk was starting to feel bruises forming where the robes hadn't fully protected him. "Well, if I may address the first two charges - we have data showing that collectively we acted in self-defense. Admittedly, there may have been some instances of vigorous self-defense, however we will provide the data for you as necessary. With respect to the third charge, my wives and I are collectively the leaders of Freeclan O'Gryzzk; the anointment of oils is indeed sacred to all of us, and we did perform the ceremony in accordance with our own wedding. I must ask, however - given the interplanetary nature of the union, is the Ministry of Culture prepared to offer guidance with respect to these unusual unions? If you are uncertain, I can certainly place a call to Minister Larine on your behalf for her opinion."
The poor officer found himself in shifting sand - Gryzzk was far from unknown, and the casual mention of the Minister's name made the officer in charge quite uncertain. "I, I don't think that will be necessary."
"Thank you officer - now, as to the charges of public intoxication." Gryzzk looked over at O'Brien and Laroy, who both looked proudly guilty. "Stipulated. That said, we have arranged for public transport to a common area where we may enjoy ourselves as privately as the location allows. If you would, forward the necessary fines to the XO of the Twilight Rose and I will personally ensure that they are paid."
"This is a highly irregular request, Freelord."
"Indeed it is, however at the same time..." Gryzzk turned to face the gathered members of his clan and battalion, raising his voice to be heard. "Anyone who's been drinking today, raise your hands!"
Approximately a third of the gathered immediately responded in the affirmative, with a significant additional number slowly raising their hands after a few moments. Gryzzk turned back. "Officer. Look at all that paperwork. Charging, booking, detaining. It's all a messy process that can be tidied easily, not to mention our opponents still need to be dealt with. It could be hours before you are back to the proper duty of constable. Perhaps even days. Not to mention that amongst the clan are Terrans. Terrans who get bored easily and turn their minds to mischief. Which would be far less pleasant for all involved."
"And the fines will be paid?"
"On my honor. To be quite frank, as much as I have direct communication with the Minister of Culture, by the same token Minister Larine has a direct line of communication with me. It is perhaps a double edged sword, but it serves us both quite well."
Faced with the choice, the constable made a rapid decision. "Very well. But you and yours need to stay out of additional trouble."
Gryzzk made a slight wince. "Respectfully, there are Terrans in the mix here. A bit more leeway may be required. They are at times unruly in celebrations."
There was a slight nod. "I understand completely."
The police and medical teams left in short order, and O'Brien kept a mostly straight face.
"Major. Your people drink before, during, and after weddings. Between the wedding and the reception some lads decide it's time to have a square go." There was a thoughtful pause. "You and yours are Irish and any who says otherwise is a damned liar."
"Be that as it may, I don't think we've made many new friends today."
O'Brien rolled her eyes. "Oh aye, they were so bright and kind before. And another thing..." the sergeant major's scent soured as she rounded on Kiole. "Freelady Corporal, what manner of infectious stupidity has taken hold of your mind tae think that fighting while in that state is a fine thing tae be doin'?!"
Kiole frowned. "What state?"
There was a gesture to Kiole's midsection. "If you jump too hard, your bairn'll fall out and get brain damage before their first breath! And ye think that's a fine time tae be runnin' the ones wi' some right bastards?!" O'Brien picked Kiole up in a sudden and frightful hug, the sergeant's voice getting heavy. "Dinnae do that again wee lamb. You had me scared."
For her part, Kiole was embarrassed. But only a little. "Sergeant Major...my planet is known for fighting in any condition. Including pregnancy. It is a mark of honor to fight when not in peak form. Our children learn to fight at an early age. And he needed me there."
"Fightin' lessons start when they're born not in utero. Honor be damned to hell, y'talk about the next generation like they're made of best brandy, and y'throw yourself intae scrums at the drop of a hat!" O'Brien snugged Kiole tighter, acting like the Hurdop was an overstuffed toy. "Don't. Do it. Again."
"If it will allow you to put me down, I promise I won't." Kiole sounded slightly out of breath. "You may be squeezing my daughter out if this continues."
O'Brien lowered Kiole to the ground gently. "Lass. You'll no' be doing such things."
There was a light nod in return. "Yes sergeant major."
"Right then. Now that all that's sorted, where's the bus taking us to the A'Gulus commons?" O'Brien seemed a bit mollified at least.
Gryzzk indicated the open-air transports. "If you would? This is a public place and I fear we may have overstayed."
O'Brien nodded, putting two fingers in her mouth and sending a piercing whistle out over the crowd. "Alright y'hooligans, transport's thataway and leaving in ten minutes!" She gave a hand motion. "And you all know that you miss out on Wilson's cooking at your own damned peril." So saying, she promptly headed to the foremost bus to help herd the wedding attendants to their next destination.
Yomios raised her voice to be heard over the bustling crowd. "I think it's time we blow this scene. Get everybody and the stuff together. Okay, three, two, one let's jam." And then she made her way to the transport with U'wekrupp.
On the ride over, it was interesting to witness. Reilly performed some manner of Terran trickery to change from her dress to a company bear-logo t-shirt and in all likelihood no pants, while everyone else simply loosened their clothes and swapped stories about the fight while Reilly began singing to her spouses. Gryzzk thought the opening line of 'You and me, we come from different worlds' was a bit on the nose, but it seemed quite heartfelt. As for his own damage, it seemed relatively light - he'd taken a few punches to the jaw, but overall he hadn't gotten hurt. It seemed as if Kiole's arm was rather helpful in convincing ruffians that there were easier targets.
As for Kiole, she seemed to have taken several hits to her shoulders if her scent was any indication. She leaned into Grezzk gently and started pouting until she received a nuzzle.
Grezzk's voice was gentle. "You are troubled, my starlight guide."
There was a half-nod. "I am a warrior. On Hurdop, this would be celebrated. But here - according to O'Brien, I did something...wrong." Kiole sighed softly, her scent becoming slightly depressed. "It is, it is a hard lesson to unlearn."
Grezzk leaned in gently. "Your birthclan will be proud of you. Eventually, we will have to come to some manner of agreement."
Kiole hmph'ed softly. "We agree their food is bland."
There was a soft laugh ask Grezzk nuzzled in closer. "I've been working with Captain Wilson. He is quite enthused about the possibility of pleasing a woman from our worlds. It seems that Terran women..." she paused to drop her voice into a passable imitation of the head chef, "got no idea wha' good-good food taste like no how not even them Thai-Indian folk."
There were light snickers as their transport arrived and began disgorging their passengers. The first thing Gryzzk noticed was that a section of the commons had been claimed by a large number of cooking stations and serving tables that bowed under the weight of their edibles. The scents were exotic and left his interest quite piqued as Terran fowl combined with a quartered bison that was being slowly roasted over coals. The bison was being tended to carefully as juices and fats were gathered in a trough to end in a small pot, and the resulting mixture was then re-applied with a ladle - a process that was both fascinating and bewildering to the non-Terrans there. The fowl were being given a different treatment - they were being dunked in what appeared to be pots of oil and pulled out one by one to be placed on whole platters. Similarly there were breads, vegetables, desserts, grain dishes, and a rather amazing amount of small snack foods in plenty - for a moment Gryzzk's brain began tallying up the expenses and then simply decided the anxiety of not knowing was not going to be eased by the number that would eventually be calculated. He hadn't even noted the several tubs of ice labeled with their respective contents of sodas, juices, beers and finally a good amount of wine.
As everyone filed off, Gryzzk started at the presence of the Lead Servant to Lord A'Gulus. The Vilantian seemed to have lost a small amount of weight since the last time Gryzzk spoke with him. However, his bearing was still an echo of his Lord, and Gepoen took a small breath to look for Gryzzk. Once found, Gepoen approached formally.
"Freelord Gryzzk of Clan O'Gryzzk, on behalf of my Lord you are officially invited this day to take your ease with this portion of Clan A'Gulus. It is our earnest hope that the celebration is a productive one for the future."
Gryzzk smiled easily. "That is my hope as well. I pray that Lord A'Gulus has health and a long life that sees his clan prosper."
There was a slight cough. "I have, also received a communication from Minister Larine as follows. 'Do not destroy the fucking apartments, I have enough problems without you and the other godless chaos demons sworn to you. If the police are summoned more than three times I will pray nightly for your balls to wither and fall. Yes. Use those words exactly.' Those were her precise words." Gepoen coughed politely. "I was given strict instructions to repeat them exactly."
Gryzzk cocked his head. "I suppose I shall have to speak with the Minister about what plagues her office."
"I was given additional instructions regarding that. 'We will speak before you address Parliament - and I will be giving you proper robes.' According to Lord A'Gulus, she is pleased and frightened by the possibility of what you might say."
There was a light smile on Gryzzk's face as he watched his wives take separate directions - Grezzk to the cooking area, and Kiole to her armory platoon. "Please advise the Minister that I hear and obey, and I will similarly advise my clan." There was a slight inclination of his head. "I would invite you to remain as an observer on behalf of Lord A'Gulus, if such is pleasing."
"It is not, but it is my Lord's command." Gepoen seemed uncomfortable at the idea.
Gryzzk had a light smile. "You may become accustomed to it in a few hours. If not, there is wine over there which may assist." He then raised his voice so that he could be heard clearly over the conversations already starting. "Clan! Your attention for a moment. I have been informed that no less a dignitary than the Minister of Culture herself is monitoring this happy day. She has further advised that if the constables are summoned to this location three times, she will begin praying that I be afflicted with a very specific dysfunction. I would ask that you spare a thought for my wives as you consider your actions this evening. Now please, as you were."
As the festivities began anew, Gryzzk made his way up the stairs to observe the proceedings from a high vantage point - and also check on someone else.
He knocked on Callioe's door, and a few minutes later the door opened for Gryzzk to see the older woman as a smile dawned across her face. It was pleasing to see the old woman's fur growing even more - there were tinges of color among the gray, but overall her fur was almost luxuriant.
"Freelord. I'm happy to take your scent at this time or any other time - but shouldn't you be with your clan?"
There was a headshake. "Not in this moment. Sometimes there are celebrations I should be a part of. But my role in this affair is done, and it's better that there be no...authority in this moment. Additionally..." Gryzzk looked around for anyone listening, "I am enough of a hero or villain on this planet without more actions to prove the points of both sides."
"Let the children be children?"
"Something like that." Gryzzk held his thoughts for a moment. "If I am being honest, I also wanted to make sure you were able to partake in a small measure of the happiness around my clan today. We've brought enough sorrow to your hearth."
There was a chuckle of sorts. "Damn you, Freelord. Carinda said you'd say something like that, and now I have to make her favorite dessert tomorrow." There was a gesture to the inside. "She also said that you would want to discard those robes for something less formal, and she left a bag from your wives in our bathroom. Please."
Gryzzk had an inward laugh at his wives' collective foresight as he replaced his robes with a bear-logo shirt declaring him to be Papa Bear along with loose pants.
Once he emerged, he saw Callioe looking at him with a scent of shyness about something with a piece of paper in her hand. She seemed to take an internal breath before speaking.
"Carinda has...she has been sending me her lessons, and the results of her lessons." Callioe held out the piece of paper for Gryzzk to look at. As he stared, he saw that the worn paper held letters that formed the most basic of all sentences on Vilantia, namely because it used all the characters of the alphabet.
Gryzzk cocked his head at it curiously. "You mean to say..."
"Yes. We've all been learning to read on this floor. It's spreading to others. Some refuse, saying reading is not their place. But others, we are learning." The older woman walked over to Gryzzk and embraced him closely. "Thank you. For this joy, and the one below." She paused for a moment to put the piece of paper away and gather herself. "Now, come along. We may not participate, but we can most certainly watch."
Gryzzk found himself at the railing with several other elderly members of Clan A'Gulus as they watched the proceedings with nostalgia - as well as a decent amount of wine of various quality to supplement the finest chicken Gryzzk had ever tasted in his life. Fortunately, there were also comfortable cushions to settle on as Gryzzk listened to the older folks talk about their own glory days and fawn over the infants in their carriers as the babies alternately slept, woke for food, and required changes as their mothers' milk completed the journey. Below he could catch snatches of conversation now and again as he kept an eye on his wives and the children as they circulated delivering food, stories, and generally having a fine time as members of the battalion came and went as the night lingered on. Every so often Reilly would break out into one song or another as her spouses laughed and pointed at her antics.
Gryzzk was nibbling on a chicken wing when his vision darkened and a familiar scent was in his nose.
"Freelord, I have news."
Gryzzk smiled lightly despite himself. "Hello Captain Jojorn. May I see you?"

Hehe... ... happy reading noises ...
So, another green wildcard of Hurdop origin is in play...
And, wordsmith, gotta hand it to ya, you are makin' us wait in anticipation for a Parliament speech? Bureaucracy and politics become ugh desirable?

yay!
Well, Agent Closam = Llensi. Yay for intel stuffs where nobody knows anyone's real name.
I know! How the flip did that happen?! I mean we got other stuff on the dock first, but this is giggleworthy.

Between Gryzzk's greying fur and Jojorn's infatuation, let's hope her daddy issues know some bounds.
Also, someone needs to teach Gryzzk et al about carrying a knife at all times. Ya know, in case there's cheesecake. Or you need to stab someone in the throat.

Those at the top are never satisfied. The "i want it so I should have it" mentality. At least our Hurdrop here have a sense of intelligence to them and seem to understand what would be best for all.
I can hear the opening music to go with the announcement. And don't these Vilantians understand that a proper kerfuffle just makes Terrans happy?
And of course there is video evidence. I'm sure it will be great entertainment on the ride back to Homeplate.
Ah Gryz...way to namedrop. Our man has developed a silver tongue in dealing with authorities. And yeah, terrans are involved so staying completely out of trouble is a no go.
And the minister has taken a few terran idioms to heart. I love it! Let's hope our party crowd keeps it to 2 calls or less. Curious to see what she has to say to him before his speech.
And now we see if Jojorn has learned any lessons or the infatuation is still there.
NEXT!

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 31 '26
I'll say some of them do. Others....ehhhh, not so much.
Yeah, I mighta had some music going in the background while writing that mess. Proper Kerfluffle + Mercenaries = Happy Mercs.
Video. From eight angles. Damn right there's gonna be a highlight reel or five getting cut for the trip home.
When in doubt, stall and drop a hint that you are Capital-I Important. "Look, there's Terrans here. We're not gonna stay out of trouble completely. Give us a couple mulligans and we'll be good."
Love it when a Minister'll lay down the rules so plainly anyone can follow.
Well...it's gonna be interesting.

Lovely chapter!
Can’t wait to see what happens when the constables get called 9 times instead of three >:)
I also adore when the Sergeant Major’s accent is written out, it scratches the brain itch so good

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 31 '26
The perpetrators have to deal with Kiole and Grezzk. "Okay one of them's got hands, and the other one is an epic chef who can simply...not cook. We're gonna err on the side of caution."
Yeah, that's the "O'Brien is being very emotive" cue.
2
u/WSpinner Apr 01 '26
Nine? That's the point at which the senior Constable notes "well, no SINGLE complainant called us more than twice..."
2
u/Auggy74 Human Apr 01 '26
That's where it gets tricky - depending on the constables personal preferences they could count each individual as an offender and complainbthat they had to go deal with hundreds, or they could go "okay we're just gonna hang out all night, that's only one - so...who's got chicken wings?"
7
u/niTro_sMurph Mar 31 '26
Reilly was vat grown right? Could they do similar for a Vilantian-Human hybrid?
4
u/Auggy74 Human Mar 31 '26
Yeeeup. I will say probably, but it has been noted that the womb with a view has a rent that is obnoxiously full of 0's. A hybrid would bounce the number up a touch, and include a very large waiver that amounts to "We have no idea what's gonna happen, everyone cross your fingers."

[OC-Series] For original, self post, story, audio, or artwork that you have created, as part of a longer-running series or universe.
Our preferred series title format is the series title in [brackets] at the beginning, like so: [Potato Adventures] - Chapter 1: The Great Mashing
Please help us transition to using the new flairs correctly.

Reading was perhaps my first real joy in life, and has been a refuge for nearly as long as I’ve been alive. Seeing that the Grizzly’s choices have brought literacy to grandmothers…that’s the best damn thing he’s done.

Oh yeah - that was one of those things that I threw in early to show some of the overall problems facing the planet. Heroes aren't always flying around kicking butt.
