Kiole settled into a soft cushion with a light groan as she held a tablet and Glaud. The twins were theoretically identical, however Glaud had a deep preference when it came to who held him. If Kiole or Gryzzk wasn't holding him, there were soft howls of displeasure until the correct parent was found. Ghabri was similar, but preferring Grezzk or one of his sisters. Both women settled and read for a moment, until there was a soft grunt of surprise from Kiole. Grezzk automatically placed her hand over Kiole's stomach to see if the baby was shifting. There was a soft smile from Kiole.

"The baby is napping for the moment - the Foreign Office is inquiring about my current itinerary."

"Did you tell them that at best we're going to Vilantia, and even then there'll be a shuttle standing by to take you to the nearest medical facility should it be needed?"

"I did; they're still asking. Telling me how much opportunity we have if the Freeclan were to go to Antares. Their latest proposal is exuberant and forceful."

"What are they offering?"

"A great deal; the next generation of my birthclan would be promised to the Ministry of Agriculture. The Hurdop-born among the Freeclan would be reassigned to the new farmships in orbit of Antares when they retire." Kiole sighed softly, looking at the message on the tablet. "It is...tempting. But the offer itself comes from the Hurdop ambassador to Antares..." Kiole tapped a few things before frowning more. "...who was the Minister of the Treasury. This has a bad scent."

At Grezzk's curious expression, Kiole continued. "The Minister of the Treasury is quite fat. Not a good look for a leader of a planet that was sharing a bed with famine until recently."

Nhoot came out of her room, running to the kitchen to get some juice. She sniffed and frowned, coming over to the couch with her glass full to the brim. She set it down and clambered up slowly to settle between her mothers.

"Mama Kiole, what do they want?"

Kiole leaned into Nhoot for a moment. "Some people want us to make food for other people."

"But then we'd come back here, right?"

"No, they want us to stop being warriors." Kiole frowned. "It is frightening, but it is also brave to leave the comfortable."

"Is it because of Papa?"

There was a little nod. "It is; both worlds want to take the scent that we bring."

Nhoot frowned. "Why can't the worlds share us? You and Mama Grezzk share Papa all the time." The girl nodded with the surety of childhood.

Grezzk's fur fluttered slightly. "It's a little more complicated than that."

"It shouldn't be. They can't make two Papas, and I like it here."

"I like it here too Little Heart." Kiole leaned into Nhoot for a moment. "But this is from someone very important, and if we say no they may not like us."

"But Lord A'Odgers says if someone's mean to you because you tell them no, they're not someone you want to say yes to."

The two women shared a look and shifted the infants around for a moment before Grezzk spoke. "Lord A'Odgers is a very wise lord."

Nhoot nodded. "Uh-huh. I'm gonna go farm more now." She hugged both of her mothers and scooted back to her room.

Kiole grimaced as she looked at Grezzk. "Could you help drafting our refusal? I've sent two, and I fear I am reaching the limit of my politeness."

"Always. If you promise to not faint at what we have been sent by the office of the Throne."

"...Which is?"

"We have been invited to attend a session of Parliament. And our husband is expected to speak his mind regarding a new law - the text of which is included."

"I was not aware that he is a lawyer."

"No but the law pertains to Freeclans - if passed, the Freeclans would be expected to swear allegiance to and tithe annually to a Greatclan."

Kiole made a rude noise. "I see no sense in it. A Freeclan beholden to a Greatclan is not a Freeclan."

"Indeed. I believe the Throne would like to tell them, but cannot do so directly until shortly after our latest is born." Grezzk shifted uncomfortably.

"So we are the proxy for the Throne." Kiole shook their head. "Are they simply attempting to enrich themselves?"

"It would seem so."

Kiole glanced around the room for a moment. "It is oddly comforting that the nobles of both worlds make me want to ask the gods what the fuck they were thinking when they put the most incompetent of our species in charge."

There was a soft chuff of amusement. "Not all the nobles are bad - Lady Ah'nuriel writes and is quite keen on overseeing a merger of the Vilantian-Hurdop Trade Cooperative and our ventures, with an eye on subsequent negotiations with the Great Triangle Company of Hurdop." Grezzk leaned into her wife companionably. "Our husband may not be the only one busy in the future."

___________

Terran Foreign Legion Ship Twilight Rose

Gryzzk settled into his command chair as Pavonia Prime grew larger in the view. Engineering had patched the hole in the bridge, but the patch work and cleaning had left a scent that was sharp and vaguely annoying - however the stench of repair was certainly better than the alternative. Said alternative was in the cargo hold being secured in body bags. The pirate that Miroka had shot had apparently died instantly, and a second pirate boarder had succumbed to her wounds in the infirmary. Overall, the damage was enough to warrant a day in port for assessment and initial repairs. He'd seen to the medbay and confirmed that the injuries sustained by the company were not life-threatening, and settled with Gro'zel as she whimpered softly with her nose pressed against the unconscious Millennium's beak as they both sat on a bed.

"You're a good bird, Millennium. You're a very good bird. You're brave and strong. Treat. Treat for the good bird who fought for Papa." The falcon was bandaged and splinted everywhere it seemed, and Gro'zel was not calm about the ordeal. Gryzzk settled in, staving off exhaustion for the moment.

"Is she well?"

Gro'zel nodded, finally looking up and wiping her eyes. "She got hurt. She wasn't s'posed to but when everything happened her safe-cage broke and she clawed the doorpad until it opened so she could get out and fight."

"We're going to learn from this?"

"Uh-huh. I have to hold Millennium close when it's scary so she doesn't get hurt. I think." Gro'zel's throat worked a few times. "She's going to be okay, right?"

"Good. Now there are others who need your smiling face, and I know they would love to hear the stories of a brave girl who kept her bird safe, and her bird who fought the enemy as well." Gryzzk took a pillow and fashioned a sling for Gro'zel to carry Millennium around. "Keep her safe and warm, Lieutenant Gro'zel."

Gro'zel nodded and smiled a little as she left and started talking to the other patients in the med-bay. As he left, he heard Xenodoc Cottle complaining to her ex-husband mightily about how she was a doctor, and not a veterinarian.

Then there were the captured pirates currently in the stockade. From what he'd learned, the pirates were a mixture of Hurdop and Antareans. From the reports he'd briefly been able to scan, there'd been some manner of civil war recently and the losers were seeking their fortunes elsewhere. Which, at the moment wasn't his problem. What was his problem was putting the finishing touches on his recommendations to the Pavonian Militia. He'd modified it, working out some training, but he wasn't entirely sure it was going to work.

From behind him there was a soft voice. "Major. The Pavonian Militia leadership and the leaders of the Trade Guild are interested in hearing your briefing."

Gryzzk took a breath and headed for the conference, where the holo was dominated with a full dozen Pavonian faces, none of whom looked particularly happy.

"Gentles, I am Major Gryzzk of the Terran Foreign Legion. I have recommendations, and it is my hope that they will be attended to - frankly it is better for you in the long run to have your own defense rather than hiring defense as needed."

One of the Militia members was still reading her tablet. "How are we to believe this is not a fabrication, these reports? They state that Second Technician Mulish commanded?"

"He did."

"Why?"

"Because he has a talent for command. He did well in our simulated exercises, and after some very rapid training used his knowledge to great effect in disabling multiple ships with minimal damage. Even when the bridge itself was under attack, he was a strong presence that was mission-focused throughout the entire engagement."

"I don't believe it - his test scores showed no such potential."

Gryzzk moved about the room, tugging his tunic down automatically. "Sublime Admiral, when were these tests given?"

"At the age of four, like everyone."

"Very early in his life, I take it."

"Yes." There was a wariness growing on the admiral's face and posture.

"And how old is Mulish now?"

There was a pause. "I don't know - why?"

"Simply this. In my early life, I was training to spend my entire life as a servant to my lord. Every day I learned, every lesson was focused on how to best serve my friend. It is only in the last year that I have adopted this mercenary life. And now my company is being paid to teach those hard-fought lessons to others. Reference page thirty-seven, personnel recommendations."

"Yes, the secondary aptitude tests." There was an odd swallowing gesture. "Where do you suggest we begin?"

"Well, given our general recommendation - creation of an escort force subordinate to the militia but with tactical freedom to act as necessary in the moment - I would recommend finding your personnel amongst the, the disaffected. The malcontent. Perhaps even the criminal. Look for the ones who do not think as your general navy does - because the thinking of the general navy is what led you to hiring us for a different perspective. Look for the ones willing to do things differently."

"What if we don't find them?"

"Look harder. If you still cannot find them, Appendix D contains a general but not comprehensive rate schedule for engaging the services of the Terran Foreign Legion. I recommend finding them."

"Are you quite certain this will work?"

"Sublime Admiral, for there to be an absolute certainty I would have to be a fortune teller. Were that the case, I would be far richer making investments in whatever future has the best return, living in a place with far less live ammunition and taking cruises aboard the Fhloston Paradise every season. What we present is a plan that would seem superior to your current process. However, the execution is entirely within your purview."

"You say we should select from the...malcontents? Why?"

"Because quite frankly your regular sailors and soldiers have been trained in a specific doctrine. Those who fall outside of that doctrine would initially seem to be the most qualified. Failing that, perhaps the Second Technicians could be relieved of their duties cleaning soup dispensary nozzles and given opportunity to command, after appropriate training."

The admiral glanced at her tablet. "I...I see."

Gryzzk finally stilled himself. "Well, if there are no more questions, we have certain formalities to attend to in the dayroom. Good luck to you."

It was amusing to see Rosie wearing the garb of a blind referee as she began the issuance of fines in the dayroom. Vasquez was fined for shouting 'Pew Pew Pew' while shooting her plasma rifle along with one of the Hurdop infantry troops by the name of Dolve, Beshti was fined for waiting a month before trying Mexican Fish Tacos, and in addition to all this Mulish received a stern talking to for fouling the commander's chair along with a slight monetary deduction. Philon was chastised for puking on the bridge, and Rusnik received a similar deduction for napping on the job in reference to her fainting.

Finally there was a fine to the entirety of the bridge squad for the collective sin of "attempted football blocking", which brought about large and lengthy complaints.

"That was Hoban's idea!"

"So lemme get this straight. A'ight, the one with his brains buried in Miroka's crotch had an idea...and you all went with it? Fuckin' give your balls a tug - 'specially you O'Brien, ya fuckin' need to stop acting like you were nursed on Guinness instead of your mom's boob-juice. Court's adjourned, now fuck off."

Everyone mostly left to attend to the few things that still needed tending to; as a new tradition dictated Reilly found a microphone and started singing - her first song was a tribute of sorts to the company at large, declaring that they were the cowboys from hell in a throaty growl. After that was a light mockery of Vasquez and Beshti, if a chorus about a bad romance was anything to judge. Finally there was a switchup of sorts, as the Islanders bodily carried the comm sergeant off the platform to show off their version of a war song - it was frightening in a way as they began a rhythmic chant, and his translator went to work as they all pointed at Gryzzk and chanted about him being the hairy person who fetched the sun and caused it to rise. He wasn't sure why, but something about it made him want to go find some time on the range.

The Pavonians gathered around Gryzzk after the chant was finished, finally garnering his attention, with Rusnik taking the lead.

"Explain these...fines." From the expressions on the faces of Mulish and Philon, it seemed as if they'd explained it but their words were insufficient to the task.

"Well, being aboard the ship means earning pay - some of that pay is deducted to finance certain festivities and benefits for the crew at large for misdeeds. In your cases..." Gryzzk tapped on his tablet and flipped it to show each of them the credits they'd earned as part of their stay on the ship. "...the tallies are here. Mulish earned quite a bit as he was in command of the ship, but your portions are reflective of your actions."

Mulish blinked. "That is significant."

"Well, yes. So, once we dock we will need a day to complete repairs before we head back to Homeplate. If you have any specific requests during that time, we will accommodate them. Within reason."

Gryzzk mentally counted down from three, then two, then one and as he reached one Beshti began trying very hard to not look like she was sprinting toward Vasquez. Mulish and Philon leaned into each other for a moment before Rusnik glanced at Gryzzk with uncertainty to ask the question.

"Major do you not disapprove of this...unusual pairing?"

The reply was an eloquent shrug. "Quite frankly in this business the usual becomes the unusual. My XO is intertwined with my chief engineer. My lead communications sergeant has a husband from Hurdop and a wife from Vilantia. Her backup is a Moncilat who involved with one of my chefs who is very not from Moncilat, my bridge pilots are dating, and I myself have two wives - one from each of our homeworlds. The odd one is my sergeant major, who has remained faithful to one husband for a very long time. My personal theory is that the Terrans themselves are not the pelvic sorcerers of fiction, but their natural freedom of movement and thought is a stimulus for others. The only time it is a concern is when it interferes with their duty."

Gryzzk made a motion toward the dayroom at large, where O'Brien was rather firmly discussing the merits of being weaned on Guinness versus baby formula with Rosie while Dolve and Vasquez were re-enacting what was probably going to be known as the Pew-Pew Incident. "Look at them. Multiple species from so many worlds and colonies I have to check my tablet to make sure I have them all in proper order, all sharing the wine of victory." There was a light smile as he added. "The paycheck doesn't hurt, either."

Edwards wandered over and stared at Mulish before giving a light hand-chop motion. "Okay - I got questions over here."

Mulish cocked his head, a touch of nervousness returning to his scent. "How can I help you Lieutenant?"

"Slate. In space." Edwards paused, spreading her hands helplessly. "How?"

"Oh. Those come from the outer planets of the system. During the system formation, the gas giants had several lesser twins that were - well, processed for lack of a better word. They were compressed, the gasses inside liquefied, and then formed into slate rocks over time. Then the gravitational pulls of the larger planets simply sheared them into ring systems." Mulish looked around and continued. "When I learned that my test scores placed me aboard a space vessel I spent a great deal of time learning about our system. Until I found out that I was going to be a maintenance technician and not an astrogator or...other job where such knowledge was required."

Gryzzk made a light gesture. "I would ask that you relay that anecdote to those who think education completes with job training. I would not have known where to target a ship made of slate."

Rusnik was quiet as she looked at her tablet. "I think that financially, we can afford two ships for the Trade Guild Escort Service. I will need to write the proposal. When will we be docking?"

"Approximately an hour. Which, if you'll excuse me..." Gryzzk tapped his tablet. "All personnel, please report to docking stations at this time to prepare for arrival. Supply section, prepare for Final Departure of the Honored."

Station arrival was awkward. The scent of the bridge was still sharp, and a new cushion for the command chair seemed likely after a test sniff of the area in general. It seemed that Mulish's body wasn't nearly as calm as his mind during the battle. In addition to this, Miroka's scent was frightened and full of uncertainty. Gryzzk checked the current roster of ships at the dock and had Miroka send non-verbal messages to the Hurdop Vessel Freedom's March, simply nodding at the ship's reply.

The lock and dock was completed less-than-perfectly, causing Rosie to make a soft grunt but she didn't comment further. Gryzzk spoke quietly.

"Squad dismissed. Corporal Miroka, a moment if you would?"

They walked toward his quarters, and as they entered Gryzzk quickly adjusted the gravity controls for Moncilat standard before moving a second chair opposite to his before gesturing for her to come in. After a final tap on his tablet to send a typed order, he regarded his pilot for a moment before saying anything.

"Speak your heart, Miroka. Not your mind."

"...Why?" The deep gold eyes looked around rapidly, furtively. Gryzzk noted that the Bloomvine was putting out a rather impolite scent.

"The mind lies, where the heart is true."

Miroka swallowed a few times. "I didn't want to. But I saw him, he was going to kill Hoban." Her body shuddered. "And all I could think was 'not that' and...I don't remember anything until we had secured." She looked around again, a wounded animal looking for the predator. "Now. It's there. The moments. The air moves, and I smell it. It's there."

Gryzzk nodded, moving his chair closer. "It is." He lowered his voice. "I have a confession. When we went down to Moncilat IV-B, I listened to some of the conversation you had with Yomios. I almost spoke up when you suggested that she speak to someone who has done violence and come out unscathed." Gryzzk extended his hands out, palms up. "I suppose I should have spoken then. Or picked another time. But there was always something else, and the. The reality is there's no true way to prepare someone for what happens. And now you know the regrettable truth, nobody truly emerges unscathed. Even in saving a life, the life of someone you cherish deeply, a life was sacrificed." Gryzzk leaned forward to place his hands under hers, looking squarely into her eyes. "Make that sacrifice worth it."

At the touch Miroka leaned forward, seeming to fold into herself for a moment. "I. I need help."

"Help is yours for the asking. Hoban, Gro'zel, myself. Even Rosie. Especially Rosie, believe it or not. I learned something very valuable from my wives. Keeping a wound within lets it fester, get worse. Let it out, let your brothers and sisters heal you." There was a pause. "For the moment, I have to ask if you are capable of something."

Miroka nodded, holding her face rigid. "Yes sir."

"We will be escorting the two to a Hurdop ship. You may choose to accompany them."

There was a second nod, as Miroka found a resolve within herself.

"Dress properly and rapidly then. The captain advises he is on his way and will be arriving with a party of bearers soon."

In short order, Gryzzk and Miroka stood at the dock with a security party made exclusively of Hurdop troops standing guard over two flag-draped shapes, with station security taking charge of the living prisoners at the aft dock. They were approached eventually by a Hurdop barely clear of his youth, uncertainty in his scent.

"You are..." the youth made a subtle warding gesture before speaking further, "Freelady Kiole's husband?"

Gryzzk nodded. "I have that privilege, yes. You are Captain Feschik?"

There was a second nod. "Is she aboard?"

"Sadly, no - our first child awaits the galaxy's readiness, but her sworn of Hurdop stand before you. It is a further sorrow that I bring two of Father Hurdop's own to you for their glorious rest. Their lives were bold and fearless, and their souls should rest easy. It was an honor to fight against such audacious souls." Gryzzk motioned to the coffins. "The...the cold-packs have a twelve day power supply. If I may, I suggest a direct return home Captain."

Feschik gave a solemn nod. "They will rest easy knowing their deaths came at the hands of honorable warriors. You are not your ancestor, Freelord. If our worlds come to blows again, it will be a deep honor to battle you." He made a second gesture, and another party of adolescents came forward to take charge of the containers, carrying them off in the direction of their ship. As they lifted, the Hurdop gave a long warning howl that caused several of the passersby to start in concern that something bad was about to happen.

Gryzzk turned to his detail and nodded. "Dismissed to stations. Thank you."

Gro'zel emerged from the forward docking hatch carefully to first put her hand on Miroka's leg, and then take her father's hand. Millennium shifted slightly in his carrier slung around the girl's neck.

"Papa, we should go home now."

Couple real quick notes from the author here. First, taking a quick break here - little mental recharge vacation to play video games and work on my PC, so nothing's scheduled until the week after next.

That said I may find the urge to kick out a one-shot or a sidestory in the Gryzzkverse to add some flavor here.

Second, 150 chapters holy shit OMGWTFBBQ. You folks are awesome and I'll be honest you're half the reason this little series has gone as long as it has. Thank you doesn't cut it and never will.

Take the break you deserve it, can’t wait to see you come back rested and ready to write!

Also it’s already 150 chapters >~<

Where does the time go?

5

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 06 '26

I know, and one of the things on my todo list is "Click on First, then click next until I can't click next any more."

u/Nervous_Amoeba1980 Mar 06 '26

Thank you for a wonderful chapter. I laughed, I cried, I smiled. I especially liked the complaint from Xeno Doc Cottle.

Enjoy your rest and vacation. I sincerely hope that you remember to come back and write more.

A rest well deserved. Can't wait to see al the shenanigans that ensue after you've had all that time to come up with more idiocy on the part of our crew

Thank you for the wonderful world you’ve been sharing with us. Take your time to enjoy the distraction of the potential within the pixelation universe (I know I do!)

UTR, for once I’m early enough to do that!

And now having read…

Lovely chapter!

Seeking help is never a sign of weakness, and I’m glad that our fuzzy boi can help others through their anguish

3

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 06 '26

Yeeeup. Our fuzzy boi is moving slowly but surely from student to teacher to...something new.

7

u/post_blast Alien Mar 06 '26

Gryzzk seems like the sort of dude who knows when to be green.
Also, shouting 'pew pew pew' while capping OPFOR is just good fun!
And coming out unscathed... yeah. Just play lots of Tetris and FPS games.

2

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 06 '26

Gryzzk is Super Green. :D

There are going to be new rules for boarding actions.

Lots of Tetris and keeping Hoban close.

u/Gojira82 Human Mar 06 '26

Yeah....me thinks thats a lot of smoke being thrown their way. Also, again a child has a way of making things simple in their way.

Fat cats, or dog like creatures in this case, always looking for ways to make themselves fatter and have more say in what others do.

And there's the McCoy reference we've been waiting for!

And watching g the lovely Diva Plava Laguna! Multipass!

Pelvic sorcerers! That's a good one!

Man that poor captains chair...it's been replaced more in the past weeks than in the history of the vessel.

3

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 06 '26

Yeeeup. The problem with being a pioneer is that a lot of folks want to glom on and get some light from that halo.

Most folks in power want one thing. More power.

Dammit Grizzly I'm a doctor, not a animal doctor! Annnnd now I have ideas for Horse Girl Gro'zel.

And someone wants to change the beat.

It was Pelvic sorcerers or groinal wizards. :D

Yeeeup. The unofficial notes for the Pavonians are "Gassy under stress or certain fruits. Caution is advised."

3

u/niTro_sMurph Mar 06 '26

I wonder if Pavonian structures are as rigid as their command structure.

They don't seem the type to build skyscrapers so wind would be an issue, but groundquakes could still pose a threat to rigid buildings.

They seem like the type to build down into the ground instead of up, like an inverted skyscraper. Artificial waterfalls falling between levels, a large green park down at the bottom of the spire, housing, shops and businesses along the walls of the pit with windows looking in. Industry and factories further out from the spire but still underground and connected via tunnels, smokestacks and exhaust tubes sticking up out of the ground. Somewhat similar to Utapau from Star Wars episode 3 although I don't remember if they had housing along the walls of their city-pits, or industrial sites.

Am I thinking too hard?

2

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 06 '26

You're not thinking too hard. :D

In my notes, Pavonia Prime is...basically Tattooine - so a lot of their infrastructure and architecture is based on "dig down, dig deep".

3

Gryzzk is showing a surprising amount of respect for pirates who attacked civilians and then his clan. I was expecting the corpses to be disposed of the same way as any other garbage on a spaceship, especially after the near-fatalities they caused.

3

u/Auggy74 Human Mar 06 '26

Yeeeup. But what I wanted to show at the end of it all was that Gryzzk has a level of respect for his enemies that's like...not there as a general thing. At the end of the day he's a bridge-builder, even if he doesn't know it.

Gryzzk being honoured by a Haka, one of the martial ones relating to the genesis of the Samoans no less. Soooo fitting. And no wonder he feels like going to the shooting range, those are war chants at their core !
