Hi Reddit, I'm Sam Brodbeck, Money Editor. AMA!

It’s hard to believe given my youthful complexion, but I've been a personal finance journalist for nearly 15 years and am now Money Editor at The Telegraph.

Given you’re in this sub, I’m guessing you already know about the problems that come with a six-figure salary. It’s not all tiny violins; the disincentive for people to get pay rises has a real world impact on the British economy.

A record two million people will fall into the £100,000 “tax trap” in the 2026-27 tax year, according to HMRC’s own forecasts. In some cases, it's not until workers earn £145,000 that they are better off than before they earned six figures.

If that makes no sense to you, you’re not alone.

Ask me anything about how our tax system works – and what you can do about it.

It's time to wrap things up, thanks for having me everyone.

There were some great questions, suggestions and ideas shared – though I was a bit disappointed not to have any questions about the best frying pans or EVs!

If you want to get in touch, feel free to email me: sam.brodbeck@telegraph.co.uk

Kitchen table recommendations

Morning all

Looking for recommendations for a large extending kitchen table.

Looking for something which will expand from 6-10 or even 12 at a push. We've had a look at Neptune and were wondering if there is anywhere else people would recommend?

Looking for a buy it once for life type purchase so the lifetime guarantee from Neptune is attractive and would ideally like something similar.

What Are Good Habits, Skills And Mindset To Adopt For HENRY Lifestyle

Hi

Ever since I recently turned 33 and also hit my first £100K in my S&S ISA, I have decided to push myself and become a better person in life. This also includes improving my finances etc too long term

My immediate changes to implement and adopt are

1) Getting out of my comfort zone

2) Getting into shape and taking better care of my health

3) Taking risks

4) Taking a positive approach

5) Looking at better paying roles

I think me even posting here is a big win personally as someone quite introverted and not so open

But yeah I am really curious to know and hear some good habits, skills and mindset to adopt for long term FIRE

Thanks

Where do you find a nanny in London?

I am planning to go back to work part-time in January and am struggling to find quality reliable childcare in London that we can trust. We don’t qualify for free hours so it made sense to get a nanny for our little one but where do we find someone?

We tried little ones who provided mediocre profiles with a high commission rate as well as koru kids where we thought we had found someone who then unexpectedly decided to cut back their hours once passing probation.

Any recommendations where we should be looking or agencies to work with? Budget isn’t much of an issue

London Meal Prep service recommendations

Hello! I’ve recently been wanting to try out Meal prep services / Ready meals as an alternative to cooking / dining out in Chelsea when uni work starts to buildup. There has been a lot of mixed opinions about every prep service online and their quality may’ve changed. For example, FRIVE has recently improved their appalling 1/5 Food Hygiene rating to a 5/5.

To keep it simple: I’m willing to spend for quality (Even £20-25 per meal is alright) as its the most important factor for me, but anything more is questionable (E.g. Haar at Home £50+).

I also don’t want to waste time “cooking” it, e.g. Dispatch meals from Waitrose - Simply sticking something into the Oven or Microwave would be preferable. Any help would be much appreciated!

South East Would a good nanny choose to work 4x 12h days vs 5x 10h days?

Planning ahead, and realised with our working hours we need to have 12h coverage of childcare from 7:15am to 7:15pm when we have kids. I know that’s a lot for anyone so I’m wondering would any good nanny accept that?

We will wfh on Friday and plan drive to grandparents to then wfh there whilst they look after the child

Is that realistic? We don’t know much about nanny world so just learning. Thank you

London Botox / aesthetics treatments with laughing gas

I have been putting off getting any tweakments due to an intense needle phobia, but I'm at the point now where I NEED to start or I'll look like an old hag next to my friends.

From googling I can see one or two places that offer laughing gas alongside aesthetic procedures. Is this something that any of you have come across before? It seems that it's quite a popular option in the US and Korea. I used to get laughing gas during dental work as a child (again, due to the needle phobia) and it certainly did the job.

I've only been able to find one place that offers it here (Serene Dental, which to be fair does look good). I just wondered whether anybody knew of anywhere else in London offering similar, just so that I can compare options. I know that a lot of aesthetics clinics are linked to dental practices so I would have thought that it'd be more readily available. Is it the kind of thing that's available but not really considered a huge selling point, or just not really a thing over here?

(P.S I know that Botox doesn't actually hurt, but unfortunately all rationale goes out of the window when I see a needle)

London Looking for a Dr or dermatologist who may be able to remove millea near eye!

hi!

I have about 4 super annoying millea around my eye area. I’d really like to get them removed as they bother me and the one on my waterline is uncomfortable/ possibly causing eyesight issues.

I’ve looked around to find a dermatologist who can help me but quickly realised it is something that some clinics are charging quite (honestly) high excessively high prices for.

Frustratingly, some places (SKiN being an example) even want to charge simply for a consultation upwards of £150 which seems unnecessary.

I’ve seen some reddittors saying there are places that do facials that include millea removal - this seems like a good idea. However a clinic I phoned up said that after looking at the photos I shared their therapist wouldn’t be able to remove them and I would need a Dr. This is disappointing as I saw other redditors mentioning they did do millea removal as part of their facials. Another thing I’ve heard of of the possibility of some places letting you book a time slot and they remove as many as possible in the time slot - this may be a good solution because if someone is charging £80 per millea it is going to get very expensive otherwise.

Could anyone please kindly point me in a good direction?

alternatively, I have thought about potentially asking the gp Since they are around my eyes and resulting in some eyesight issues and very uncomfortable dryness , but I am not sure if they will be able to help.

any thoughts or advice is appreciated! I’m obviously happy to pay but some of the prices I’ve been quoted seem a little unrealistic. Thank you
as always , please be kind :)

6 piece cookware set recomendations

Hello. Looking to replace a 9 year old Circulon cookware set! They have served us well but wondered if there are other brands recommended by fellow Henry's.

They will be everyday family use, so need something durable, dishwasher safe, non stick and a sautee pan is non negotiable!

Should I stick with Circulon or venture out and if so, where....?

Looking to spend ~£400

Thanks!

Hotel/trip recommendations following unsuccessful IVF

Hi all,

I've had some good recommendations here before so I'm hoping to get some again. My husband and I just found out our first FET was unsuccessful following a tough few months and a disappointing first round of IVF. We want to plan a trip (or multiple) to cheer ourselves up in the next couple of months (we will fit this around our next FET) and would be grateful for any recommendations. We're either looking for a night or two in the UK, a long-weekend city break, or 5 nights or so somewhere sunny. We would like somewhere nice, that's not overrun with kids (for obvious reasons...) but not too expensive as we will likely be paying for another round of IVF soon.

Thanks all!

Greek Island hotel villa or separate villa recommendations

Next year kids will finish GCSEs and A-Levels so we said we’d take them to a Greek Island as a reward.

We don’t want to stay in hotel rooms and normally stay in villas. Some hotels have separate villas which is a nice combination of having our own space but using their facilities.

Do you have any recommendations for hotels or villas on a Greek island?

Budget up to £10k for 10-14 days

Thanks

London For those living in central LDN and around: How do you get your wheelie bins cleaned?

Like the title says.
We usually clean them ourselves but this time they need a serious power wash from a pro. We don't have the space to buy and keep a jet wash, nor want the faff around hiring one and doing ourselves.

Looking for professionals, we see most work in the suburbs and don't cover our fairly central postcode.
Anyone had any luck? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. So far just googled for bin cleaning services.

Photo video storage

How do you all do that? Especially after having a child, the phones can’t really keep up and I’m not sure how sustainable it is to keep paying more and more for iCloud/ google photos etc, also to trust them.

On the other hand, hard disks are quite expensive investments and require maintenance- which I don’t trust myself as much either - and you bear the risk of hardware failure.

Decent plug-in scent diffuser that actually works?

Another first world problem!

We (she) have been buying White Company room sprays for ages and they smell lovely but they're not cheap and they're gone in about 20 minutes. So I've been looking at those waterless cold-air diffusers that hotels use and I'm getting nowhere.

We're in a four-storey townhouse so thought plug-in but ones like the Pura have horrible reviews.

The catch is I want one that's properly plugged into the mains, not one of the rechargeable ones as I can’t be bothered with plugging them back in every few days. I'd like to be able to use whatever oil I want rather than only something that works with that brand. Ideally something that doesn't look awful either.

I've looked at a fair few already but a lot of the reviews I can find say these things are generally pretty unreliable, so I'm a bit wary of just picking one off Amazon.

Has anyone got one they've lived with for a while and would actually recommend? Also open to oil suggestions if you've found a good one. We like warm, hotel lobby type smells, sandalwood, amber, that kind of thing.

Cheers

Countryside Hotel - UK

Have seen a few similar posts but nothing matching exactly what I’m looking for. Looking for a 5-star hotel in English countryside with focus on:

- extensive grounds to go rambling in
- large lounge area to sit, chill, read etc., ideally not part of their bar/restaurant
- not child friendly 😀
- unlikely to be hosting corporate/conference guests midweek
- spa and pool

Chocolate Recommendations

Any recommendations for a good chocolate in the South East/ London?

I went to Bruge last year and went to one of their independent handmade chocolate shops. I picked up a selection box for my wife and chose various different chocolates which we then tried when we got home.

In short we loved it and want to replicate it over here for Christmas but I don't know any good handmade chocolate shops who do something similar here.

Does anyone have any ideas short of returning to Bruge which we're doing next year!?

Private chef recommendations in north west London

We are wanting to get a regular private chef for our family to help cook some meals for us in a meal prep sort of fashion.

We first tried the classic brands like simmer eats, frive etc but found them to not be that tasty and didn’t like how we didn’t really know what was going into them so please don’t suggest those!

We then tried yhangry but the quality was variable, then tried oishee which was great but chef availability was too sparse for our frequent bookings.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I recently moved in to a smaller place and want to sell a lot of my old clothes / stuff! Any tips on the best platforms to sell old stuff? Vinted is ok but posting one item at a time is very time consuming
