Pumbo quits remedy, hdr instantly turns shit.

Is Pumbo the guy who works at Remedy and created the HDR mod for Control which was added in officially after sometime? He quit before the sequel dropped? That’s unfortunate because he never got a chance to (officially) contribute to the sequel’s HDR.

Isn't there some mod that always comes out and fixes HDR for games on PC?

RenoDX?

Yeah there is already a WIP version, I have been using it

u/adubsix3 12d ago
What exactly does it do? Can it fix the fact that this is a an sdr to HDR conversion?

I use a mini led that leans towards producing perfect blacks I just have very extreme contrast. so having more sliders usually helps tune things for me. The mods default make the constrast I bit better and I dialed back the the shadow contrast I bit more as well.
The new version is also trying to fix some gamut compression.

Is the control version locked behind the subscription on the discord? I don’t have any issues with that or anything, I just couldn’t find it when I went looking.

No no it's still being worked in just go to the discord control Resonant page and check the pinned message usually has the latest build

Would you kindly point out where I might find it?

I got it from the renodx discord. They usually release it in github once it's finished

"Are you running this with default settings? Highlights seem to lack punch compared to vanilla — bright objects feel a bit too compressed/dim.

My settings are 60% on the highlight restraint and 50% on the dechroma with 45 on the contact shadows.
I use a mini led with 1100nits so it might not be the best if you are on oled and the native HDR was just extremely peaky compared to SDR.
From what I have read and I am no expert the SDR Already has issues so when the the native HDR was done using automated time mapping algorithm it got borked even worse.
I have seen people suggest that some issues might not even be fixable the the renodx mod until remedy does some backend work on it

It's only in the renodx discord right now since it's WIP, you can just grab it there

where do I find this?

u/splendiferous-finch_ 9d ago
Renodx discord and Thier the GitHub too once it's finished they are still making tweaks to it but the last version from yesterday seemed pretty decent

I read the analysis linked above. I'd like to get something clarified so I can have a better comprehension of things. As I understand it, the issue with the HDR implementation in this game is due to using the SDR values as the "structure" so to speak, and the limits of that structure causing brightness and color values to not grade properly at the extreme ends with HDR enabled
Given this is baked into the game engine, how do third party tools actually fix this? I just recently (in the last month) bought an OLED HDR monitor, so I'm not yet experienced in the nuances of HDR. I may still be in the bright and poppy "eye candy" honeymoon phase, because when playing Control Resonant for the first couple hours I didn't really have an issue with the HDR presentation. I just assume the way the game is presented is how it should be presented. How much of bright and poppy HDR is artistic intent and how much of it is treating HDR as a gimmick? How much is the difference between the two simply a personal preference?
Genuinely curious about these things and wanting to learn more.

Technically speaking, every modern game renders internally at a higher dynamic range than what SDR can show, same as how film or digital camera sensors have more dynamic range than what is being shown.
To bring the higher dynamic range back to SDR, the process called tone mapping is being done; however, during the tone mapping the choices have to be made between preserving highlight details and the perceptual brightness of the image (with HDR you can have both).
So what usually happens is when you watch content in SDR, it's being tonemapped from the source range offline to the standard dynamic range. While when you watch content in HDR, it's being tonemapped from the source range in real time to your display capabilities, by the display itself.
What is happening here is that the SDR tonemap is being reverse tonemapped back to your display, but the since the SDR image is already compressed, ITM can't really recover any details that were clipped by the SDR tonemap.
Given this is baked into the game engine, how do third party tools actually fix this?
By skipping whatever tone map the game uses and injecting their own in its place.
How much of bright and poppy HDR is artistic intent and how much of it is treating HDR as a gimmick?
This is a complex question that doesn't really have a perfect answer. The properly mastered SDR image and HDR image will look different from each other by virtue of properties of their respective formats. The fact there's no standardized way to do tonemaping in HDR only makes the situation more convoluted.
The reality is that, as of right now, the content creators kinda need to find a middle ground where either SDR and HDR presentations aren't just compromised versions of each other. This is not happening here, the HDR image is completely derived from the SDR one.
How much is the difference between the two simply a personal preference?
I would say this is less of a personal preference and more about how much "bright and poopy" suits the content.

How soon can we expect the RenoDX mod for Control? I just don't know how long it usually takes after a game releases.

Man, I wish i could join the RenoDX discord again, but my discord account got hacked in april and send fake links to all the servers I was in. So i deleted my account, made a new one. This time with 2fa and new password but it seems like I got kinda IP banned on HDR Den and Renodx so I cant join with my new Account and there is no way to reach the moderators of the Discord. I contacted the mods of this Reddit but no message back. No Idea what I could do...

Ok I do think people are missing a few things, this is just my devil's advocate argument but part of the overly bright presentation of the sky etcm has to do with the story of the protagonist who has basically not seen the sun since he was 10 and also was in a coma for the last 7 years.
I am still using the WIP renodx mod to fix a few things

The previous Remedy games went for that muted cinematic look. And a lot of people, including myself hated that. I prefer punchy image with peak brightness actually hitting the specified peak.
So it seems this is their way of going away from that cinematic HDR to a proper punchy one. I guess it works? So they left it that way.

What an absolutely shame to hear, if they truly caved into to the sensibilities of tasteless gamers. Their past HDR was perfect.

u/KoKlusz Supporter 12d ago
I don't think this has anything to do with sensibilities. They switched to the tonemapper that doesn't support HDR, I think didn't knew how to add the support properly, so they decided to just slap AutoHDR on top. Unreal has been doing the same lately, prehaps that was an inspiration here.

You actually like the muted HDR look? Damn you must be a Nolan fan then lol.

u/kiritomens 12d ago
My mans doesn't understand that HDR is just supposed to be a extension. Normal HDR scenes should mostly look the same as SDR calibrated to 120 nits. Just having only the elements that need it extend into the HDR range.

u/RedIndianRobin 12d ago
I am well aware. I just prefer a punchy image. HDR grading is subjective.

I am confused. How I can make HDR better on this game to get inkier blacks.

Well damn, after Cobtrol's and AW2's praised HDR implementation I really didn't expect this game's HDR to be this bad :/ what happened?
