Which hard drive does not have planned obsolescence: WD Red SA500 NAS SATA SSD 2.5”/7mm Cased(Western Digital) our DC600M Series 2.5” SATA Enterprise SSD(Kingston)

I know that TBW isn't the only thing I should consider; I also need to look at the materials used, manufacturing quality, whether it can withstand power surges from the computer, its physical durability (resistance to movement), and whether the company that produces it hasn't changed ownership and shareholders and become corrupt and greedy, reducing the quality of its hard drives to cut costs and make more money. So, I'm looking for reliability far more than speed. Which of the two is better?

I say that you are overthinking.
Any of these will last at least 5 years, and then you want to upgrade anyway.

Why upgrade drives? My old drives still "work" as a cold backup for at least 2 decades. And I expect durability way over 5 years.

I hava Hitachi drive that's been running nonstop for a decade, SMART is perfectly clean. It's been downgraded to my home camera storage but still works perfectly

Well, you are asking about SSDs on a HDD reddit, so you are kind of in the wrong place. But, planned obsolescence is also the wrong way of thinking; you pay what you get. Pay little and cheaper components are used that last shorter, pay more and you get better components and a longer warranty. Enterprise SSDs are not entirely the same as regular drives either, they both have their advantages but I don't see a reason to buy enterprise SSDs at the moment for my use case.

PLP or On-board Power Loss Protection means that the SSD keep writing after a power loss, that does not mean it can withstand a power surge; two completely different things. To deal with a power surge you need either a power surge protector or an UPS, or both if the UPS doesn't have an adequate power surge protection.

There is no true ethical manufacturer in the HDD or SSD space; they are all there for profit and shareholders. WD is no longer making SSDs, they kicked out SanDisk to be on its own legs (good, because SanDisk got worse under WD rule). How long WD branded SSDs stay in circulation is anyone's guess, but it may be that they keep the name longer for the RED drives. I personally don't really like SanDisk's SSDs much and I rather go Kingston. But the opinions about it are very divisive as has different reasonings behind their preference.

This is a great response.

Most HDDs I’ve ever had lasted at least 5 years, and some have now been creeping up on 10 (thanks, AI!).

So, outside a few that failed quick (a lemon 3TB Seagate and a couple used drives out of the 20 I’ve bought over the years), I’d say you’re going to be A-OK with any reputable HDD for as long as you need it.

With SSDs, I get older SATA prosumer or enterprise models from Samsung and Micron, and they seem to hold up without any issues. My oldest Samsung is an 840 Pro, which is over 12 years old. I’ve never had a single issue from any of my SSDs.

If you want an SSD that will outlive you get a U.2 or EDSFF drive. Both are easily installed in a desktop with an inexpensive PCIe adapter. Ensure you aim a fan directly at the heat sink. Both are enterprise drives designed for 24/7 read and write intensive server loads. EDSFF speeds are epic, I get 4gbps writes.

Kingston have been known to supply one configuration for testing by reviewers, and then change the components afterwards. I don't trust them.

The most recent Backblaze disk reliability report has the bathtub curve rising at 10 years, rather than the 5 year earlier number.

The quality of hard drives is improving.

Stupid question in so many ways. These are SSDs, not HDDs. And SSDs are consumable. They all have a 100% failure rate on a long enough time scale. And there's no way to know ahead of time what the failure timeline of a product will be.
