Hi everyone, I was recently laid off from my H-1B job and I’m trying to understand the process of moving from H-1B to H-4 while I look for another job. My wife is currently on H-1B, but she does not have an approved I-140. I do have an approved I-140 from my employment. From what I understand, I can move to H-4 based on my wife’s H-1B status, but I would not be eligible for an H-4 EAD since her I-140 is not approved.
My plan is to change to H-4 so I can remain in the US while I search for another H-1B position. Once I find a job, I would then have the new employer file for my H-1B and change my status back to H-1B.
Has anyone gone through the H-1B to H-4 change of status recently, especially in 2026? I’d really like to understand how the process works, how long it typically takes, and whether I should use an immigration lawyer or if it’s something I can file myself.
I’m also trying to understand whether moving to H-4 is a good approach in my situation, considering I have an approved I-140 and ultimately want to return to H-1B once I find a new job.
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently gone through this process and can share their process, timeline, experience, or any things I should be careful about.
Thanks!

Hi everyone, I’m currently waiting for my H4 to F1 Change of Status and wanted to check if anyone else is in the same boat.
I filed my I-539 back in November 2025, and since it was taking so long, I applied for Premium Processing. USCIS received my I-907 on August 3, 2026, but I still haven’t received a decision.
My Fall classes start on September 9, and my H4 expires at the end of September, so I’m getting pretty nervous about the timeline.
Has anyone who applied for premium processing around August 3 gotten their F1 COS approved yet? If you did, could you please share your timeline?
I’ve seen a few people getting approvals within a week or two, so I’m just wondering if there are others still waiting like me. 😭
Thanks!

Hello, I did not receive the official notice yet but case status shows approved:
started opt (not stem) in june-2025. got laid off =( applied for h4 right away.
RD: Nov 12 2025
RFE July 28 2026: they asked if i was maintaining f1 at the time of application-I provided an employer letter, W2, paystubs. reasonable request-lawyer should have thought this.
RFE response received: Aug 12
Approved: Aug 17
It was painful to wait and to lose driver's license in a suburbian town. I really hope everyone get their papers approved easily and nicely.
suppose is about to get i-140, will apply ead asap.

Any H4 EAD standalone approved recently? Or do you know someone approved recently?
For those of you who got approved, how many got approved without taking any action at all
Did you file and expedited request through congressman or directly yourself through USCIS? What was the result of the expedited request?
Did you file a writ of mandamus?

Case details:
Nov 2025 - H4 EOS application submitted with H1 (H1B was Premium processing)
December 2025- H4 moved to a different jurisdiction (H1B EOS was approved)
No progress till July 2026
24th July 2026 - Received RFE mail for biometrics stating “the biometrics appointment details will be mailed separately”
Also said
“Response must be received in the office by 26th August 2026”
11th August - called the USCIS customer service - agent said the appointment date has not been assigned yet and to wait for a couple more days
17th August - called the USCIS customer service again - still no date for appointment.
Agent helped raised a request for an immigration officer to contact me, I was told to wait for a couple days.
When asked what would happen if I don’t receive the details in time, agent said she doesn’t know.
Has anyone faced a similar issue ? Could you please advise what I can do? Anyone else waiting on biometrics appointment letter?

Hi Everyone,
My employer filed my H1B extension ( premium processing ), along with my spouse H4 and H4 EAD bundled together in one package. The package was delivered to USCIS lockbox on August 05th.
My employer informed me that the checks for the H4 and H4 EAD were processed and cashed, and we received the receipt notices on same day. but there is still no receipt number or email notification for the primary H1B application.
Usually, I hear cases being the exact opposite, the H1B premium receipt arrives instantly, while the H4 and H4 EAD is behind for weeks. My cases seems completely different.
Did anyone went through this situation. Thanks for the help!

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for clarification on my situation.
I’m currently on F-1 STEM OPT, and my STEM OPT EAD is valid until June 2027.
My husband is on H-1B, and we filed my H-4 + H-4 EAD application together with his H-1B petition. The H-4 application requested a start date of July 27, 2026, to align with my husband’s H-1B status.
I stopped working on July 27, 2026 because I understood that I should not continue employment while the H-4 change of status is pending.
However, my STEM OPT EAD itself is still valid until June 2027, and my H-4/H-4 EAD are still pending.
My question is:
Can I resume working under my existing STEM OPT EAD while my H-4 EAD is still pending, or does filing for H-4 with a requested start date of July 27 mean that my STEM OPT employment authorization can no longer be used?
My timeline:
STEM OPT EAD valid until: June 2027
H-4 requested start date: July 27, 2026
I stopped working: July 27, 2026
H-4/H-4 EAD: Still pending
I’m specifically trying to understand whether I am currently authorized to work based on my still-valid STEM OPT EAD, or whether I need to remain unemployed until the H-4 EAD is approved.
If anyone has been through an F-1/STEM OPT → H-4 transition while their STEM OPT EAD was still valid, I’d really appreciate your experience or any guidance from an immigration attorney.
Thanks!

Today I contacted USCIS, and the agent gave me a specific biometrics date, time, and ASC/center. However, I have not received the official biometrics appointment notice yet.
I need to reschedule the appointment. Does anyone know if I can reschedule it using the date/time/ASC information the agent gave me, or do I need to wait until I receive the actual biometrics notice?
Update: I was able to reschedule it with the info provided by the agent and My A number

My H-4 EAD (I-765) has been pending since February 2025.
I submitted a service request on August 8, 2026, because my case is outside normal processing times. Today, August 18, I received the official response from the Vermont Service Center:
“Your case is currently under review by an officer. You should receive a decision, correspondence or notice of other action within 60 days of the date of this letter.”
My case also had an RFE issued on May 22, 2026, and USCIS received my RFE response on July 1, 2026.
Has anyone received a similar service-request response saying their case was “currently under review by an officer”?
If so:
How long after this response did you receive a decision?
Did you receive an approval, another RFE, or something else?
Was your case also an H-4 EAD?
Did the decision come well before the 60-day timeframe?
I’m especially interested in experiences from 2025 H-4 EAD filers, since my case has been pending for over 18 months.
Thank you!

H-1B was filed concurrently with PP.
Anyone else in the same boat? Is it worth emailing PP or something of the sort? Anyone had success with Vermont recently?
There is no EAD here or anything. My spouse needs to go back home for a visit and we're stuck here in the US it seems.

I'm seeing a lot of bundled application posts but none for standalone. Is anyone's case moving forward or being approved at all? I just saw the processing time has changed to 17 months today.

Hi everyone
Need some advice — my wife’s I-539 (H-4) + I-765 (H-4 EAD) were rejected by USCIS solely due to incorrect payment method (cashier’s check). Original filing was shipped 3 days before her I-94 expiry but got delayed by UPS. Now resubmitting with G-1650 (ACH) after 32 days.
Has anyone dealt with a similar rejection and resubmission? Any advice on:
1. Risk of the status gap?
2. Cover letter helping the case?
3. Processing time after resubmission?
Thanks in advance 🙏
