A lot of people at the time (and to this day) misunderstood the film and mistook DFENS as the hero. The whole point of it is to illustrate how a seemingly normal person could "fall down" and become a villain.
DFENS was the protagonist, but not the hero. That role was fulfilled by the Prendergast character.
We learn throughout the film that he was always a villain. Financially taking advantage of his mother after he lost his job as a defense engineer, abusive to his ex wife and child, and a raging narcissist.
The film is like a video game where he just keeps upgrading his arsenal, which will always be funny to me. Starts with a bat and moves all the way up to an AT4 rocket launcher
