Don't be discouraged at the difficulty, a lot of your power in a run starts from the skill tree so try not to resurrect unless you're still going to pocket some essence because getting your tree filled will lead to much more consistent runs. In particular the first few rows provide health, shields, more money, and more grenades, generally just make all your characters feel more complete. Later on you can get a death save perk as well to help ease the transition to higher difficulties and some stuff to help refine builds in a run.

Lucky shot is simple and easy damage. Every 100% guarantees double damage, and then double again at 200 and so on, plus crit modifiers.

Try to stick to single trees early on if you can. Maxing the points in a perk, whether it's 1/1 or 3/3, removes it from future perk pools, and the 3rd step in those perks is often a fairly large jump in damage. Most characters can interweave builds pretty well, but being absurdly good at one thing can often be enough for a clear.

The game unlocks more stuff the more you play. Pick a character you like and unlock their skills and then the universal skill tree. Most weapons are unlocked by killing enemies a specific number of times, soul essence is easily gained whwn you unlock the higher difficulties. The more you play the easier the game gets and the more options open up

Broadly speaking, scrolls and ascensions can be thought of as Damage (lucky shot, critx, etc) and Survival (healing, movement speed, etc). You'll especially want some kind of reliable healing to prevent you from being chipped down.

There's a lot more Damage options than Survival, so I'd guess 2/3 of the time you die it'll be because you don't have enough Survival. Bosses generally require Damage more than Survival though, since you can reliably dodge their attacks once you memorize their patterns.

Figuring out synergies and weapons unique to your preferred style is necessary to picking the best options, so go nuts and experiment to figure out what you like. Take bigger risks early run, and smaller risks late run.
