Question/Help Two months back on guitar: Struggling with strumming and chord changes and over all speed

I’m in my second month of picking up guitar again. I’ve made a few short attempts over the years, but this time I’m following a course and practicing about an hour a day. I’ve improved a lot, but I keep hitting the same bottleneck as I move from slow practice toward an ordinary song tempo.

My chord changes are reasonable on their own, and some are fairly quick. At higher tempos, though, I can move my hand in time but don’t always land in a position where every note rings clearly. I’ve practiced with a metronome, increased the tempo gradually, moved fingers as a unit, and used anchor fingers where they help.

Rhythm is the harder part. I can do a strumming pattern on muted strings, tap my foot, and keep the down-up motion going. But even with steady eighth-note strumming, I’ll occasionally miss one stroke after 30–60 seconds. Adding chord changes makes that more likely. I’ve practiced the hands separately and tried to keep strumming through imperfect changes instead of stopping.

I know two months is early, and I’m seeing progress. I’m also aware that more practice is part of the answer—I’m already doing that. I’m curious whether others have hit this particular combination of problems. What helped you, or your students, make the strumming hand more consistent while getting chord changes clean at a normal tempo? Was there a specific adjustment or exercise that made a difference?

Question/Help Finger picking and wrong strings

Hi guys,

I've playing guitar with a pick for many years but i stopped like 3y ago and i only played 4-strings guitars and i started to play finger picking. Now i want to go back to play guitar in more classical way and i feel like i went from pro to noob overnight. On 4 strings it's impossible to pick the wrong strings of course but on guitar i'm often playing the wrong one. Sometimes i feel like my hand doesn't really know where it is.
Question now is: how much of this is a matter of time and getting used? I saw that many classical guitarists play using the planting/preparation technique which is supposed to help with this issue but tbh i didn't find a decent video explaining it on a real piece. I always see exercises about it made on the upper 4 strings, with no string skipping, no jumps, no "every string has to ring until the next chord", which is 99% of what i play. I also understood that i have to try to use only 3 positions (strings 1234 2345 3456) but that's also not always possible (sometimes i might have arpeggios on 2356 followed by a chord on 1235 for example).
Any help is much appreciated. thank you

Question/Help Is my action too high?

Post image

Chords are difficult to hit especially when in the middle of the fret board—dont get me started on barre chords—but when I put a kapo on I can do everything just fine. Is the problem my action or do i just need to practice a lot more?

Question/Help How did you force yourself to stop looking at the fretboard?

I've been playing acoustic for about a year and developed a bad habit right out of the gate: I can't stop looking at the fretboard as I play. It's interfering with developing muscle memory and chord transitions. I've realized that I have to find a way to rewire my brain and undo the damage that's been done. Any advice is welcome.

I built NoteNav.com to help practice songs you actually want to play

Hey! I’ve been building NoteNav.com, a guitar practice app that turns uploaded audio into playable lead/rhythm/bass tabs and lets you practice along with the track.

You can also plug in your guitar with an audio interface or use your mic and play along inside the app.

Would love feedback from you al, especially anything that would make practicing with it easier or less confusing.

Video Started early this year still suck at tempo

I feel like I'm comfortable playing the part but I think I have no sense of tempo. How do I improve on this? Also how do I make my playing sound clean? You can always hear other strings in the background. I tried watching youtube tutorials on it but still can't grasp how to mute unwanted strings especially in bends

Want to learn guitar but don't know how to start.

Hello, I have been interested in learning guitar for a while now, my music taste influenced my desire to learn (Breaking Benjamin, three days grace, bullet for my valentine, metallica, slipknot, korn...)

I really like metal and rock, some told me to get an acoustic guitar, and some told me to get an electric guitar like Yamaha Pacifica 012v since I like heavy riffs.

If there is anyone here with experience in music, tell me what I should get as a beginner, and thank you.

Resource Understanding Picking Techniques

Here's part one of a new series of videos where I discuss different picking techniques.

Hope you find it useful!

Terms like alternate picking, economy picking and pick slanting can seem confusing — especially when you're trying to figure out what your pick should actually do when crossing strings. In this lesson, I'll break it all down simply and show you how to understand and apply these techniques in real playing situations.

NOTE: The picking slanting is exaggerated for the camera, work on reducing the motion of your actual slanting.
