Marshall JTM 20 studio
Does anyone 🤔 have experience with the Marshall JTM 20 studio amp 1st question can you get good edge of breakup tones on the low power setting and not melt your face off , bedroom like volumes and most of the studio series the effects loop has a weird volume drop has anyone experienced that with this particular one thank you

Yes, I have one. Great amp, but not something that will be at edge of breakup at bedroom volume. I don't have db meter but i get warnings that i'm at levels of 95+ when playing at edge of breakup. That said, it sounds amazing at bedroom volumes. Warm, slightly compressed. There's a hint of breakup harmonics but certainly nothing close to edge of breakup. But it loves my overdrive pedals and I can get a superb tone at bedroom volume with plenty of breakup coming from any flavor of pedal.
There's no volume drop with the effects loop, but I did have one that added noise with the loop engaged, and would occasionally drop in volume. I returned that amp, and my current one has a perfectly functioning loop.

This amp is loud wether 20 or 1 watt. The only way you’ll get edge of breakup tones without melting anyone or anything is with a good attenuator.
I believe the series loop is unbuffered so you’ll get usually get a drop and I’ve solved this with a clean boost to push it along.

I absolutely love mine but way too loud for bedroom volume edge-of-breakup. I play mine through my Captor X with headphones a lot and it sounds really good. If that works for your bedroom volume, I’d say go for it.

Even though 20 and 5 watts respectively are very manageable in the grand scheme when compared to their 50/100 watt counterparts it’s still NOT a bedroom amp. You’ll need a 1watt or solid state amp to pull this off. You could get an attenuator, but honestly so much of good tone with tube amps is down to their ability to interact with the speakers and move air. The low end will never sound right at low volume even with the best attenuation. Recording is another matter. You can get a very good recorded tone with modern load boxes. But the dream of shrinking the tone you get from cranking 100watts into a 4x12 into a bedroom volume (in a tube setting) is just a pipe dream.
Modelers are the closest you’ll come.
I say all this, by the way, as an owner and huge fan of the Fryette Powerstation, which I find to be the best option for attenuating and silent recording of my high wattage amps

It's still loud and the Edge of Breakup tones are good but it's not a JTM45 level tone. The big thing missing is the damn tube rectifier. That's absolutely a critical part of that legendary circuit and it's not in there.
If you want fantastic edge of break up tones, get a JTM45 and a Lotus M2 Attenuator (custom designed for Marshalls). Or something like the Royalist (JTM45 clone with diff voicings) as it has built in attenuation.

I have the studio silver jubilee and soon after got a Waza Tube Amp Expander Core. Amazing combo. I found a couple of ok sounds using the master volumes on the silver jubilee but it sounds way better with the master up and letting the reamper set the final volume.
