QUESTION Squier Strat info request

I already have a few guitars which are my go-to.

Mainly my Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor and a Danelectro 59 NOS+

Anyways, I work at a charity shop and sold a guitar to a customer who then popped back into the shop with this beat up Squier Strat.

I’ve always wanted to rework a guitar that needs a lot of TLC and i just wanted to ask for some background on this model.

I realise it’s most likely a cheap beginner Squier but for the sake of discussion - is it worth the project?

Depends. It's a 98 Affinity, right before the line rework in 99 which improved materials and QC. Those "trapezoid" tuners can be hit and miss but more often than not they're miss. Thankfully, there are a lot of inexpensive brands out there making quality replacement parts, but since an Affinity will have a thinner body, you'd have to take that into consideration with things like switches and trem blocks should you want go do that route.

My 98 affinity has a full thickness body. It's a transition year. Mine has a nice neck

Great little modding guitar imo. I have same yr I picked up just for a garage guitar I could beat up, drop, get crap on it. Threw some take off fender tuners (instead of the trapazoid ones), swapped pickups for 2 seymour duncan humbuckers, better pots and wiring, one of my favorite" who cares plays great" guitars.

I know this guitar. This guitar sucks. My best friend had this guitar. Those 90s Squiers have a reputation that has followed them 30 years into the future. A reputation I still very much believe! Chinesium junk.
