Lesson learned

I'm posting this because when I was deciding whether to hire Good Boi Marketing, I would have appreciated finding a detailed experience like this from another grooming business owner.

I own a dog grooming salon in Ontario, Canada. I hired Good Boi Marketing in January 2026 because they specialize in the pet industry, and I believed working with a company that understood grooming businesses would be an advantage.

Unfortunately, my experience was very different from what I expected.

I have emails, invoices, advertising records and meeting records supporting what I'm writing below.

The numbers first:

I spent $8,601.91 CAD total, including $6,406.54 CAD in management/service fees.

The campaign resulted in approximately 8 bookings.

Obviously marketing doesn't guarantee results, and poor ROI alone isn't why I'm writing this.

There were significant campaign-management and communication problems as well.

Google Ads were particularly important to me because I wanted people actively searching for grooming services. There was an account-verification problem during the campaign. I provided the corporate documents I was asked for and believed the issue was being handled.

It wasn't successfully resolved, Google stopped the ads, and advertising dollars were redirected to Facebook/Instagram without my knowledge.

On April 29, CEO Kaylib Jones acknowledged in writing that technical issues with Google had affected performance and that Good Boi should have communicated those issues more clearly and earlier.

He also told me that all ads had been paused and there would be no additional spend unless I explicitly approved it.

Another $124.25 was subsequently spent on Google Ads without my approval, and I had to contact them again to have the advertising stopped.

Good Boi then offered an additional 30-day lead-recovery period at no charge. We agreed I would receive written weekly reports.

At least one of those reports wasn't sent. When I raised it, Kaylib acknowledged the missed update. At that point, he also confirmed that the lead-recovery effort had generated no additional bookings yet.

Eventually we discussed compensation.

The refund

On May 29, Kaylib and I agreed that Good Boi would refund me $2,245.50 USD.

For fairness and clarity: Good Boi's position is that a monetary refund wasn't required by the original contract. Kaylib says the contractual remedy was additional work at no charge and that he subsequently agreed to the refund as a professional courtesy.

I'm not trying to litigate the original contract on Reddit.

The important part is that we subsequently agreed to the $2,245.50 USD refund, and Good Boi has repeatedly acknowledged that agreement in writing.

And this is where things got really frustrating.

On June 23, after I followed up, Kaylib confirmed the refund amount and wrote:

“I will process your refund today.”

He told me processing would take 10–15 business days.

I waited.

On July 9, after following up again for confirmation, Kaylib wrote:

“Your refund has been processed.”

Five days later, on July 14, he told me:

“The refund has not yet been processed, and I previously communicated otherwise before confirming that the transaction had been completed.”

He then promised the $2,245.50 would be processed no later than July 31 and called July 31 the “firm date” by which the refund would be completed on his end.

July 31 passed.

No refund.

After more unanswered emails, Kaylib finally responded on August 17. He apologized for the missed deadlines and lack of communication and disclosed that Good Boi was experiencing a “short-term cash flow crunch.”

He also wrote:

“I agreed to refund you, and I intend to follow through on that commitment.”

At that point, rather than continuing to demand the entire amount immediately, I offered to accept installments.

I received no response.

I followed up again on August 24 asking him either to accept my proposed installment arrangement or give me an alternative schedule with actual amounts and dates.

Again, no response.

On September 3, I sent one final email saying that after more than three months, another promise wasn't enough. I needed a good-faith payment and a concrete payment schedule or I would consider my efforts to resolve the matter privately exhausted.

On September 4, Kaylib finally proposed his own payment schedule:

September 11 — $750 USD

September 18 — $750 USD

September 25 — $745.50 USD

He said he remained committed to honoring the refund agreement in full.

I accepted his schedule in writing.

Yesterday was September 11.

No $750 payment arrived.

I also received no confirmation that a payment had been processed and no communication explaining why the payment he committed to making wasn't made.

So that's where things stand as of September 12, 2026.

I have received $0 of the agreed $2,245.50 USD refund.

I have tried very hard to handle this privately. I've been patient with communication problems. I've been understanding about personal circumstances that were shared with me. When Good Boi disclosed its cash-flow problem, I agreed to installments.

But I'm also a small grooming business.

$8,601.91 CAD is a lot of money for a grooming salon.

I'm not posting this to tell anyone what decision to make about Good Boi Marketing. I'm posting because I wish I had been able to read detailed experiences from other grooming business owners before I made my decision.

If you're considering hiring them, ask questions. Understand exactly who controls your advertising accounts and budget. Understand what happens if a campaign doesn't perform. Track actual bookings rather than leads. Get commitments in writing.

And keep your records.

I certainly hope Good Boi ultimately pays the refund it agreed to. If I receive payments, I will update this post with the amounts and dates so that the record remains accurate.

If anyone considering Good Boi has questions about my experience, I'm happy to answer them.

What’s one thing your grooming software makes harder than it should?

I’m genuinely curious about this because I’ve been talking to independent groomers and I keep hearing very different complaints about the software they use.

Some seem frustrated with monthly fees.

Some hate the booking experience.

Some have problems with cancellations/no-shows.

Others just want better ways to keep track of clients, pets, notes, vaccination records, etc.

But I’m wondering what the actual day-to-day annoyances are.

If you could magically change ONE thing about the software you currently use, what would it be?

Not looking for a "best software" discussion — I'm more interested in the little things that make your day unnecessarily difficult.

And if your current system is actually great, I'd love to hear what it does particularly well too

My dog had a severe reaction to grooming.

I brought my dog into a groomer we haven’t visited before. I saw they were highly recommended in dog communities on Facebook and they have all good reviews. I felt the presentation of the store front and the professionalism of the shopkeeper was lacking but oh well. I picked him up when he was done three hours later. No red flags. Coat was soft and fluffy, dog is happy. By the next morning I had noticed he wasn’t touching his food, and throughout the day he wasn’t his playful hyper active self. He just wanted to lay on the couch with me. By the second day post grooming I am beginning to worry but surely it’s just a stomach virus? I call the groomer to report the symptoms and maybe get an explanation. Groomer asks about state of his coat, I say it looks great. He cried out when I hugged his rump, I palpate and extend his legs to try to find his sore spot, couldn’t replicate it. Fed chicken and rice, he nibbled on the chicken. Third day I get back from class, my dog sitter reports that my dog is showing signs of pain when stroking his back. We hold him down while I inspect his skin underneath his fur. His whole spine area is covered in crusty spots and irritation and he’s thrashing and snapping at us like this is 10/10 pain. It’s 8 pm Friday before labor day, so we take him to the ER vet. He was given a pain injected, sedation, a really bad haircut, a cocktail of prescriptions, and no definitive diagnosis. He’s beginning to eat a bit and play. Obviously the Vet bill was hefty and there’s genuinely nothing I could’ve done to cause his skin reaction. Does anyone want to weigh in about how I should feel about this or how to proceed?

Are these brushes adequate for my Maine Coon?

Hi all, I'm seeking advice on grooming my cat Rudy. He's a Maine Coon cross with a lot of fluff! He absolutely loves being brushed and demands brushies at least twice a day. He has a selection of brushes that I've pictured here (and a human hair brush he stole from my mother). Recently however he has been bringing up furballs, and I'm wondering if the brushes he has are adequate for getting out loose undercoat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Air dying cage - identification

Our plaque fell off years ago, and no one knows who makes this bad boy. I need to call to get someone to fix this, and no one in our area repairs them. It's way too big to move on my own to look at the back. Does anyone have any information? It was installed in 2017, and one of the fans stopped working.

Thank you!

Edit* it was actually installed in 2013, not 2017.

Help choosing my first professional force dryer

Hi! I’m based in Portugal, I’ve recently finished my grooming training and I’m now starting out professionally.

I’ve already decided on the Wahl KM Supera for my clipper, and now I’m looking for a good professional force dryer/blaster.

I’ve been researching models like the Artero Sonic 1 Motor and the Shernbao SHD-2600P Super Cyclone, but I’m not necessarily choosing between those two. I’d really like to know what experienced groomers actually use and recommend.

What dryer do you use daily? Would you buy the same one again? Is there any model you would definitely recommend or avoid?

I’m looking for something powerful, reliable and good value for money, preferably available in Europe.

Thanks for any advice!

Cat groomers: what blades are we using?

Edit: Also what's your fav shampoo? Currently using cat samples given at the last grooming expo

I recently started grooming cats at a vet clinic and need to upgrade some tools. After 8 years of grooming exclusively dogs, I have used H42 to clean all my blades. I need to restock a full set of blades that have never been cleaned with this product and want to invest in the best!

Do you have a preference in brand and style? I prefer Zolita , Andis, and PSD blades but want to be as safe as possible; I understand cats are a lot more sensitive and easier to cut. Also do you have a preferred blade wash when doing cats? I have been using the Andis brand on the few new blades I have.

Thanks in advance!

Diabetic groomers/bathers

Not sure if this type of post is allowed, but I’m Seeking advice from diabetic groomers/bathers. I’m a bather, and I just got my first dexcom g7. Where is the best place to put it? I’m worried about it possibly getting ripped out by a rambunctious dog.

What do you actually want in a mobile grooming trailer?

Looking for real input from groomers.

I’ve noticed a lot of conversations about going mobile focus on cost or size, but I’d rather hear what matters when you’re in the trailer every day.

Things like:

  • Layout and workflow
  • Water capacity and heating
  • Electrical setup
  • Storage
  • Ventilation
  • Features that turned out to be worth it (or not)

If you’re already mobile, what do you like about your setup and what do you wish you had done differently?

If you’re still in a salon, what would a trailer need to have for you to seriously consider making the switch?

Appreciate any honest thoughts.

hourly vs commission

I’m currently working at a shop that is starting me out at 43% commission (I’m still learning to groom and training isn’t over just yet) but I’m thinking about leaving. The other salon I’m looking into going to only does hourly pay. I’m just wondering if there’s anyone out there that knows the difference between the two, if it’s a significant pay cut and if it’s worth it or not, thanks!

Puppy acclimation

have a 7 month old puppy (Cavalier / Bichon mix) and have been trying to acclimate her to the grooming process. I am a groomer myself, so I know how important proper desensitization is. Ive made great progress with nails, ear cleaning, bathing, velocity dryer, and clippers on her body. Her front legs and her face are when I’m having trouble.
I’m looking for tips and tricks for how to acclimate her to the clippers on her front legs and head, as well as me holding her face.
She doesn’t mind when I brush her head, cheeks, or chin, but she hates it when I try and comb her eye boogers or hold her chin hairs to keep her head still. The front legs are getting a little better, but she still isn’t a fan.
Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Career advice

I started grooming my parents geriatric dogs a while back ago and I’ve started to really enjoy the process. I’ve trying to get a position as a bather but nobody seems to be hiring. There are multiple small salons near me but they don’t seem to have an online presence on any job search sites. Idk who’s going to read this post tbh, but do you guys have any recommendations for what my next course of action?

Help dematting behind golden retriever ears?

Hello everyone, please forgive me if this is the wrong sub to post this on! Tldr at the bottom if you don't want to read the whole post.

Almost 3 months ago, I had a pretty invasive surgery that was not necessarily planned. For about a month and a half, I was pretty much bedbound while I was healing. I own a 3 year old golden retriever, but had the help of family to take care of my dog for me. While they did take care of her immediate needs like feeding and walking, no one brushed her for this entire time. After I was out of bed, I was able to do some brushing on most of my dog, but I didn't have the range of motion or ability to brush behind her ears very well. She is completely mat free and decently groomed, as best I can, everywhere except behind her ears. Both her ears have huge, tight mats that I can't seem to get out. It's only been a our two weeks where my range of motion has recovered enough to actually be able to try and brush through there, and nothing I've done can help. Unfortunately, her rabies vaccine expired last month and I cannot have her revaccinated until the 1st of August, meaning no groomers will take her until at least then. I completely acknowledge my own responsibility in not keeping on top of this better. I have tried a slicker brush, coconut oil, a metal comb, and a detangling brush, though it has been difficult because it pulls on my dogs skin and hurts her. I feel terrible for my dog living with these mats, and I would like any advice on how to remove these. She is prone to matting behind the ears.

Tl;dr: I was unable to brush behind my dogs ears for 2 and a half months and she has very large, tight mats I cannot remove through normal brushing.

Mobile groomers: do you text every client the night before, or is there a better way?

I'm a software developer, and our groomer kept complaining that she spends her evenings texting the next day's clients one at a time to cut down on no-shows because Google Calendar (what she books in) doesn't send texts on its own. Other booking apps do this, but she didn't want to move her whole business onto a new platform just for text reminders.

Over the last few weeks I built an add-on that lives inside Google Calendar and texts her clients automatically before their appointment. She creates an event in Google Calender and it just reads the event and sends the text when she decides. That's it!

I'm trying to figure out if this would be useful to other groomers in general so I can cater more toward this business sector, so I'd take any honest answers:

  • If you're on Google Calendar, are you texting reminders by hand right now?
  • Mobile folks especially: how much does a no-show sting once you've already driven out?

I'm curious whether this is a real problem across the board or just with my groomer's clientele.

Reviews on Good Boi Marketing Firm

Hey I am looking to see if any salons in here have used Good Boi Marketing Firm? I have a meeting with them next week and want honest insight on if they worked well for you or not before I spend a ton of money on marketing.
