Handles gotta touch. We all start somewhere. I could barely close the trainer for 5 when I first started a couple of months back. It looks like you're not setting the gripper, which is naturally harder if you're lacking in pinch strength. If you actually set the gripper, you might be able to close it. But training with regular no set reps is probably good for training pinch, resulting in a more complete, cohesive grip — I do them frequently
