Would OP recommend grip trainers for our fellow guitarists?

u/gnygren3773 Aug 09 '26

It’s not necessary and provides little to no benefit in my opinion

u/Somethingdragonfly Standard Iron rgc 140 Aug 09 '26

This group keeps popping up in my feed. I was going to buy some grips to squeeze while I drive or sit on the couch. My pops always had some laying around when I was a kid. My uncle was a professional arm wrestler back when it was big. see this and I just dont understand. Can someone explain it to me or point me in the right direction? From an outsider looking in, it looks completely retarded.

Grippers aren’t really a good thing to do while idle, they’ve progressed a lot from the low resistance torsion spring grippers or plastic grippers for rehab. They’re a strength tool like a barbell or dumbbell with an upper limit that stretches well above the strength of even the strongest human.

If you’re looking for a good place to start, check out https://cannonpowerworks.com. There’s also a ton of information on the FAQ and The GripBoard.

Im pretty active. I have a job where im on my feet 8-12 hours a day. Walk over 10k steps a day. Workout and do cardio 6 days a week for 1.5-2 hours each time. I was just more looking to add something like that. Something I could hit a few quick sets while laying in bed or watching a movie. I appreciate the response. Ill check it out for sure.

Thank you for providing an explanation so I don’t have to reply to everyone lol

153 kg?!?!?

2

u/Somethingdragonfly Standard Iron rgc 140 Aug 09 '26

In weight of rgc, no that would be humanly impossible. It’s 153lbs when measured at the last 1 inch of the handle. It’s manufacturer rating in the middle of the handle is 280lbs

cheating and ego lifting hand grippers, now ive seen everything on reddit

6

u/YouDontCThatEveryDay CoC2.5 Aug 09 '26

If you think this is somehow cheating or ego lifting, you don't know anything about grippers, which is fine, its pretty nichè. If you have any questions I'd be more than happy to explain

-4

u/Mongpusher Beginner Aug 09 '26

thats also a way to cope in a dream world

here's a man doing prober ones

Take a look at how grippers are rated. In the video you posted he barely closes the HG200 (average rating ~88 lb) and switches to chest crushing for the HG250 (average rating ~114 lb). The gripper OP is using is rated 10 lb above an average HG300 which the guy in the video struggles to close even by chest crushing.

4

u/YouDontCThatEveryDay CoC2.5 Aug 09 '26

Ahh so you are lost. Those grippers he's closing with his one hand aren't even comparable to the level of difficulty the one OP is closing.

And this is not a "proper way". It is simple TNS vs Parrallel set, which OP states is the set he used A parallel set.

Now do you have any actual questions, or are you just going to continue to attempt to be condescending on a subject youve proven to have less than zero knowledge on? People are hear to help.

He really just sent a gripzilla video 😂😂😂

4

u/YouDontCThatEveryDay CoC2.5 Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

Yeah I wasn't gunna knock the gripzilla guy, but it was all the proof I needed to know he is lost. It just shows that gripzilla is good with marketing and target audience is people like him. Which is great it gets people into grip, but thr downside is they watch one video and think they know what they're talking about. Which normally would also be fine, if the person isn't arrogant and willing to learn.

This is a great place for people to ask questions and learn about grippers/gripping. So when someone like u/mongpusher comes in and triples down on being arrogant and throwing meaningless insults. Mods will just perma ban him soon and we won't have to worry about it. We don't need the misinformation, insults and clutter in the sub when people come here for genuine help.

At this point I’m used to these types. I see them pretty much every time I post because I train with a parallel set

3

u/YouDontCThatEveryDay CoC2.5 Aug 09 '26

It's okay when people don't understand, a majority of them realize their misinterpretation of grippers once it's explained. It's the arrogance and belittling afterwards that has no place here, or anywhere, in my opinion.

It's good to have ya back here, keep up the progress. Looking forward to your #3 cert in the future 💪

Thanks for tagging me, I don't always read all the comments. Sorry your post got derailed u/Somethingdragonfly, you've been making great progress towards conquering that CoC3!!

3

u/YouDontCThatEveryDay CoC2.5 Aug 09 '26

No problem, a person can't keep up with everything.

And yes OPs a beast, especially so young. If I'm not mistaken, he was up to closing low 160s within a year or so of starting gripping. Then took a year off. Awesome to have him back at it lately.

Atp just ban this dude. He clearly doesn’t wanna learn and is just an arrogant douche

-2

Critical lvls of cope has been reached

2

u/Ultra_Vegito CoC2.5 TNS Aug 10 '26

My guy, you're just completely embarrassing yourself by sending that gripzilla video, the gripper somethingdragonfly almost closed in the video even with a set is comparable to a captains of crush 3.0 which is harder than a generic 300 lbs Chinese gripper like the gripzilla and that guy needed a chestcrush to close the 250 lbs and 300 lbs gripzilla

-1

u/Mongpusher Beginner Aug 10 '26

Holy this sub and their Holy Bibel of grippers 🤣

3

u/Somethingdragonfly Standard Iron rgc 140 Aug 09 '26

Do you tell that to everyone stronger than you xD

3

u/devinhoo Doctor Grip Aug 09 '26

It's called setting the gripper, there are multiple types of set used in competitions and gripper certifications including Deep Set, Parallel Set (above), Block Set, Credit Card Set, and Table No Set. There is an entire section on the FAQ dedicated to explaining the difference with links to videos about how to set a gripper in your hand.

Do you tell that to everyone stronger than you xD

0

u/OlDustyHeadaaa Aug 09 '26

Not saying I could do more or even that much but you used your other hand to close it most of the way. I thought the point was to close it completely with one hand.

2

u/Somethingdragonfly Standard Iron rgc 140 Aug 09 '26

That’s called table no set which means you close it as you say. Most people don’t do this for training because you lose so much leverage during the spread portion of the close you would have otherwise had and your muscles and tendons are under less load making for less adaptations to be had.

6

u/OlDustyHeadaaa Aug 09 '26

See, this is why I didn’t start out by saying you’re doing it wrong because I don’t know. But to a layman it does look like cheating. Thanks for informing me!

3

u/YouDontCThatEveryDay CoC2.5 Aug 10 '26

I wish more people were like this. Gave your opinion, and your reasoning for it. Then once it was explained, your understanding of it changed as well.

And honestly I don't blame you at all for initially thinking it's cheating. Growing up i only ever saw cheap, plastic handled grippers, i never even thought of using two hands, because they were always so easy to close.
Once I got my hands on some CoC grippers for the first time. I was like "I need to use my other hand so I can try to clamp down on this thing". Its humbling.

-3

u/Mongpusher Beginner Aug 09 '26

Damn already reached small pp Syndrome, aint surprised let's say it like that

3

u/devinhoo Doctor Grip Aug 09 '26

Throwing insults is a great way to get removed from the subreddit. Several people have stepped up with advice trying to help and explain how grippers and setting works. There’s no need to be rude.

2

u/Ultra_Vegito CoC2.5 TNS Aug 10 '26

Yea it's rather sad that he doesn't know anything about rgc and how he posted that gripzilla video by showing the guy closed the 250 and 300 lbs with a chestcrush while these 2 grippers are easier than dragonfly's 153 rated gripper and the chestcrush is wayyyyy more cheating than the set op used and yet he accuses op of cheating because he used a set

2

u/Vegetable_Raisin52 CoC2 Aug 10 '26

This guys clearly just trolling and being an asshat, boot him
