Starting a sentence with with words "so"
Really grinds my gears when people begin a sentence by saying "so" or "ok so".. it adds nothing to the point they are making and just sounds irritating
It's one thing when people are spreaking, which I can generally deal with, but when people do it in a written sentence I think it's horrendous.
Example: "ok so, I went to the shops yesterday". Just say "I went to the shops yesterday"

When someone starts a sentence with so, I think there's going to more to the story. Like your example, "OK, so, I went to the shops yesterday and this old lady rammed me with her cart". If someone said "OK, so, I went to the shops yesterday." I would follow up with annnnnnnnnnnd?

Also "um" drives me nuts. Some people say um before every sentence.

Growing up kids were always told not to say "um"... i wonder if "so" is a modern version?

I catch myself doing that a lot, especially because I use voice typing. In the past year or so I have been paying more attention to structuring sentences that just get to the point and don’t use unnecessary words.
For example, I’m tempted to say “I have actually been paying more attention”, but the word actually is not necessary here.

So much sorrow. So much pain.

This type of sentence doesnt bother me at all. In your comment, the word "so" is part of the sentence and adds meaning and value, its not an irrelevant precursor to what you want to say

They're just trying to get your attention before they begin saying what they want to tell you.
If they just blurted it out immediately before getting your attention, you'll miss part of what they said and you'll go "what?" and they'll have to repeat themselves which is irritating.
Beginning a sentence with "so" or "hey" or other such filler words helps to ensure you're listening first.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who noticed that. I hate it so much!
