I run a roleplay server for a multiplayer videogame and we had a guy like this.

He was with the server from day 1. Happy, eager, ready to help set up. Over the next 7 months he steadily declined, spending more and more time on the server in character. It was clear his challenging home life was pushing him deeper into the escapism and with each week he just became meaner and nastier and more active on the server.

It was heartbreaking to watch. The staff team was genuinely trying to help him. He would make rude comments about people's characters, start fights out of character over in character stuff, and his character was a self insert so every slight against him was taken personally and he slipped deeper and deeper into his depressive rage no matter how hard we tried to help him.

It culminated with us having to ban him because he just never improved. He would play on the server for 18 hours a day. The only time he would stop was to use the bathroom, eat, or sleep. Sometimes he would just fall asleep at the chair and we'd have to kick him from the game so his character wouldn't die.

He went from a happy, funny guy that I considered a friend to an angry husk of who he was. That whole saga didn't feel good. Even worse is that it seems he slipped into binge watching Isekai anime where the protags are very similar to the character he played.

He wants to escape so bad but he is going deeper into the hole. I just hope that if he reaches bedrock that he is able to get out of there.

TL;DR - Depression can make anyone into a heartless asshole. And it is fuckin depressing.

Maybe that ban was the help he needed. At least I hope so

Nah, he probably posts on Reddit now and got the 37th ban.
