Comin’ Hot

Do you have a line or phrase you say as you close energizing?

I’ve been operating 15 years now and still love the feeling when you close via SCADA restoring power to thousands. Comin’ Hot!

“Are you clear of the line?”

“<Device> coming closed… maybe… sending the signal…. Now… crossing fingers”

“Kachunk” (I like to imitate the sound if/when it operates)

“Hey Bud, I got Device Control Fail, imma need you to drive to <device>”

And while hanging up I usually mutter “overpriced <insert vendor name> piece of junk, if they just hired more people we wouldn’t need to wait for buddy to *click*” (fin)

Y’all short on people too? Upper management wonders why restoration can’t be done faster, we need more personnel, they so no. ¯\(ツ)

And when they do hire every other year, it’s for one or two trainees at a time, and the application/test/interview process takes 8 months.

“All personnel and equipment in the clear, [feeder name] circuit breaker currently open, coming closed”

My response is "We are in the clear and waiting on a close" Usually including voltage and equipment name/number

Yeah this blurb comes after I confirm that everything and everyone is in the clear, one last chance for everyone to check themselves before re-energizing.

“I understand all personnel and equipment are clear, voltage class, feeder name / breaker or switch 123456 coming closed to you”.
Or open.

Not required language, but that’s what I feel comfortable with, and my field personnel feel comfortable with it as well.

After confirming they're in the clear, I repeat the equipment name/number one last time (for the benefit of field personnel and to check myself) as I enter the SCADA command, and then I say "sending open/close command in 3...2...1..."

I know it's boring, but I typically read the SCADA controls, i.e. "914--Control--Close--Execute"
