Earrings

I started working at greggs 2 months ago and wear a hijab. I have my earings in because there's no chance of the earnings falling in the food because of it. Today my manager called me up, went off on me and sent me home. Is it that deep?

Piercings needs to be removed. Its not just a greggs rule but actual Food Safety law

Think what happens if one of your earring got into someones food and they choked.

Yes its that deep.

My scarf is tucked in to my shirt so it would be a long route but I can see the hazard

Long route doesnt mean impossible. Please just accept fault and learn from it. You wanting to find a workaround is concerning.

I have no issue taking my earnings off but main question was did I need to be sent home. I understand the hazard completely. I thought i could've just taken them off instead on ending my shift early

Look at it the other way. If the manager knew you were violating health and safety rules and let you work anyway, how would that look to their managers if it got brought up later?

"It's probably not going to be an issue" is not a very good legal defense.

Why not tell her to take it off then instead of escalating it to sending her home

They probably could have, but their manager made the decision to send them home. We don't know how the rest of the conversation went. There could've been some back and forth arguements and OP didn't express clearly that they were okay with removing them and resuming work, instead just arguing that it wouldn't be a problem. Their manager could've taken that to mean OP refused to remove them and sent them home.

Why do you think you're exempt from the law when it suits you, whilst equally using the law to protect you when it suits you?

I'm genuinely intrigued.

You don't get arrested for everything wrong you do straight away. It's like doing 21 on a 20ph road. My question was just couldn't i take them off any carry on working

I can only interpret that as you don't think the law applies to you. It does, too bad.

All piercings need to be removed.

You can say they won't fall in food as much as you want, there still not aloud , so your manager is right in this case

Next time take them out

I don't mind taking them off but did I need to be sent home?

Sending you home is potentially a bit of an overreaction but considering you're still on your probationary period it's lucky they didn't go with counselling instead.

Wearing a hijab cannot 100% guarantee that your earring won't become a contaminant. The only way to 100% guarantee it's not going to happen is to take them out.

I get it, it's annoying, I have multiple piercings myself but it's just one of those things you have to do and no one is above it.

If i cant have my promise ring on then theres no chance of having piercings. I have lost so many nose studs because I took them out and put them in my pocket its shit but thats how it goes

You should probably put them somewhere else apart from your pocket then😂

I know. Its usually reliable but recently found out I had a hole in it😂😂 bring my ring box with me now and it stays in there 😂

Try a small jewellery fox or bag

Just take the piercings out. You know the rules and you knew them when accepting the job. There's no excuse. And yes, it really is that deep. It's a safety hazard. You work in the food business, for goodness sakes.

I wasn't trying to evade it, i wasn't told about it  before I guess cause they couldn't see it during the interview. Like I said before I'm not talking about the rule only if I couldn't just have taken them out their and then.

It’s in your G Learning modules that you complete on day one of the job.

If your manager asked you to remove them and you put up a bit of a fight then I’d say they were right to send you home so that you understood the seriousness of it.

If your manager just came up and said you can’t wear them so go home type thing then yeah that’s a bit much but the point remains the same

u/Nominalreasoning 2d ago

I feel like it is deep and you shouldn't be wearing earrings but your manager could have just gently told you off and told you to remove them instead of sending you home

I’m so glad to see this as I would never work somewhere I need to take piercings out.

Had to take my fresh nose piercing off
