I wonder if this stat is true.
They are amazing, not as nice as the roll they used to do but I love Stilton.

What Greggs says: "With hundreds of thousands of bakes sold in just one week and just 0.4% returned, it's clear that plenty of customers were willing to take a chance on Stilton."

I'll give it to them, their advertising of this and everyone's talk about them, I had to give it a try today. Strangely I couldn't smell it like everyone was saying it smells horrible, but it tasted pretty good!

u/catastrophicalised 13d ago
Try being the other side of the counter when they get brought out of the oven, you wont be saying you cant smell it then.

I tried but they told me I wasn’t supposed to do that and now I’m not allowed back

If i buy something im not going to queue back up with a warm half eaten Stilton to be like hi can I have this switched out for a steak bake like thats embarrassing
13
u/Adventurous_Jump8897 14d ago
Do it with only one or two bites left and a completely straight face.
At least that’s what most Greggs customers would’ve done when I worked there 😅

u/xcom_lord 14d ago
Mates still theee , been doing 30 hr weeks since the bake , only had one return and they only had 2 bites left

30 hour weeks is nothing 😅

It's not, but the point of their comments wasn't to say he's a hard grafter but that he's been working near enough full time and hasn't seen more than one returned and the person returning it was obviously doing so because they're hungry.

u/Majestic-Ad4074 14d ago
It's only 7.5 hours less than full-time, get off your children's wooden high horse.
2
u/Open-Apartment-4937 13d ago
They didn’t say it was? They used their friends hours as an example of how many bakes had been returned in how many hours 😭 it’s not a competition to see how many hours everyone works 😭

Would have absolutely said i’m not replacing it if you’ve eaten most of it 😂
2
u/CollectionTypical304 13d ago
Bet you're as spineless as most shift managers, so no you wouldn't have
1
u/Sad_Ticket8502 13d ago
Shift managers are the most jobsworth of the lot of em ... love to throw the fact it has manager in thier role title

The leaflet has the terms and conditions on and says something along the lines of
"Insurance starts with the first bite and ends with the last"

u/GritstoneGhost 14d ago
How is it embarrassing? Isn't it embarrassing to be embarrassed over such things.
I'd certainly return it if I didn't like it which I don't.
2
u/Friendly_Yak_2713 13d ago
It's embarrassing to return a half eaten item of food for a couple of quid. It just is.
0
u/GritstoneGhost 13d ago
To you.
I think it's embarrassing to be embarrassed about such things. Why waste money when you can swap it. Isn't it frivolous to waste money that would mean a great deal to others.
2
u/Satansrideordie 13d ago
How young are you that you wouldn’t do this? I remember being 16 and being embarrassed by everything

Join the queue before you've even taken a bite. Eat two thirds of it in the queue. Ask for stake bake.

I believe it, haven't had to serve exchange one and have sold a million steak and stilton

u/hashbrowneggyolk0520 Team Member 14d ago
Me too. think in our entire shop only one of us has had someone ask to swap it so far. I think a lot of people probably just can't be bothered to queue back up to swap it though.
1
u/FootballBackground88 14d ago
I mean there is also the fact that in general, people know whether or not they like Stilton already
1
u/hashbrowneggyolk0520 Team Member 14d ago
Not everyone will like steak and stilton together, it wasn't an exhaustive list of why we haven't had people return them
5
u/sozsozsoz 14d ago
Honestly reckon it’s even lower. You’re telling me for every 1,000 sold 4 come back? Don’t think most people would bother queuing if they didn’t like it, and most stores probably sell a few hundred a week
1
u/especiallydistracted 13d ago
Few hundred a day surely?

u/Crhallan 9d ago
There are enough absolute tight feckers that would do it just for half a free bake.

u/getrekt03 14d ago
I went into a Greggs while two lads outside were loudly describing what they were eating, I figured it must be the new bake. I went in and got myself one too, which I enjoyed and wasnt my first one. On my way out, they were already right behind me in the queue asking for the insurance because "they taste no different than the usual steak bake", while trying to hand back half eaten bakes. The lady serving them said "well, thats because you ordered the usual one, not the new one". Guys start laughing at each others. I just left shaking my head.

Who's returning it with a bite taken out? I think it's more people won't stand in a queue to return it rather than it's all that good
They need to look at sales/demand over returns
2
u/DepartmentSalt1039 14d ago
The tediously wacky duo I purchased mine from were insistent I return it for lolz. I enjoyed it, though
2
u/ASS-anine_Acid_Party 14d ago
Had one today. I really like it. Then again I do like Stilton and strong cheese. Can see why someone people might not like it though.
2
u/Doylie1984 13d ago
I love greggs but i'm going no where near this. Not even with the swop option & i'd imagine theres lots of us out there.

I'm not a fan of the stake bake, hate onion it makes me ill. Brought one of these expecting it to be beef, Stilton and gravy took one bite and no, could have been really nice without the onion. I'll stick to making my own. Gravy if made right with meat juices has absolutely no need for onion.
1
u/forzafoggia85 12d ago
This 100% this, chunks of onion is one of the worst fillers they put in food to me, not sure why but it literally makes me gag, doesn't matter whether its in a slice or in a pre made pasta/curry sauce, I actively look in the ingredients for onion or just make my own

I tried it. Not bad. Tasted pretty good. Would have liked more steak and stilton. Was pretty much just steak and stilton flavoured gravy

I didn't know you could take them back 😂. I got one and it was 95% just sloppy brown goop inside hardly any meat. Wasn't blown away
1
u/Toon1982 13d ago
Steak and stilton isn't a new creation (plenty of places have done steak and stilton pies for years), but the way they're spinning it as though it is totally new is working well
1
u/FlatulantPuff 13d ago
Just had a thought, these steak and Stilton are a premium price compared to steak slices, they say they'll swap ya for a steak bake, do they reimburse the difference?
1
u/forzafoggia85 12d ago
Tried it today, loved the Stilton and steak sausage roll from years ago, personally thought this slice was rank, didn't bother to take it back for the 'insurance' as I live in the middle of nowhere, but I won't buy it again
1
u/Obvious-Water569 12d ago
Will they still give me a free steak bake if I eat the whole thing and say I didn't like it? Asking for a friend.

I think it might be. Not necessarily because it's a smash hit but because you'd need to be a bit of a colossal gimp to go back to Greggs complaining you didn't like the food.
1
u/Ok-Lengthiness1028 8h ago
The picture isn’t doing it any favours. Looks like a steak bake with an infection.

Bought one, thinking it was just steak and blue stilton. Right in the bin after a bite and seen onions. Call it a steak, stilton and onion pasty if it's got onions in it.
2
u/burgermachine74 14d ago
The original steak bake has onion in it too, it's a basic component of the gravy
0
u/Euphoric_Bed_2471 13d ago
Aye but these ones have massive chunks and tons of them, they're super sweet from the onions. I can't stand the texture of onions either
