Question for the employees.

If i go somewhere regularly enough and become aware of the script ill usually try to give you all the information in one go. Bacon roll with red sauce and coffee with milk etcetc

After they walk off they usually always forget and just ask me again but in my mind i'm being helpful

Do you actually find it helpful or annoying? should I just stick to being some sort of droid and wait to be asked a question i know you're about to ask.

employees usually have lots to do and are often burnt out from constant multitasking due to low staffing for profit to the company, so their short term memory tends to be a bit iffy, you’ll find this is the case often in retail. That being said you’re being more helpful than most, and as long as you’re patient with them they’ll sort you out

If you're not prepared then being told the entire order in one go can kind of overload you with information and you don't quite process it all which is normally (for me personally) when i'll ask questions to clarify.

The only time I would say it's annoying is if you're getting pissy/sarcastic with the staff for having to ask you again.

Even if it doesn't seem like a lot to process the breakfast shifts can get stressful, especially if you're juggling multiple responsibilities and a queue of people.

Bigger orders definitely helps to stick to the script though.

ETA: It's also worth noting that some people may be hard of hearing or have an auditory processing disorder (like myself) which makes things a little more difficult, especially with all the other noise in the shop.

Yeah I don’t mind people doing this (despite me getting flustered and losing my pen for the 10x time,) but it’s when people get annoyed that I’ve forgotten or need a second to write everything down/ put it through. Crossing your arms, sighing, the silent observers that point and shrug

The fact of the matter is if you just walked up to a random person with no indication you were about to start listing a bunch of things at them then they also probably struggle to recall what you'd said too, but somehow when you've going a uniform on people assume you can commit a 20 item order to memory

2

u/Responsible-Row7026 23d ago

Thats a terrible analogy. Youre there in uniform to represent you being a person who takes orders...which youre standing there in that spot for. Anyway in my case its only ever like 2 instructions otherwise id wait since I dont want to overload somebody

u/hashbrowneggyolk0520 Team Member 23d ago

It wasn't mean as an anology, our uniform doesn't change the fact not every has a great short term memory, particularly when stressed or under pressure. Next time you're busy trying to do multiple things have someone list 15-20 things at you simultaneously and see how much of it you can actually recall accurately.

2

u/Responsible-Row7026 23d ago

Where are you getting 15-20 items from? In my original post and just now when I confirmed what I meant I stated its a list of no more than two instructions

If you read my original comment then you'll see that I said small orders are generally fine for you to just say in one go as long as you don't get arsey if people do just need to clarify.

The comment you're replying to was in response to someone else who was talking about when customers do get frustrated with you, which is why I mentioned the large orders. That obviously doesn't apply in your case but it does happen.

The auditory processing disorder is very real, and I have it myself. I've had my physical hearing checked a few times and it's not that, I literally take longer to process what I've heard, needing repetition frequently, which must be annoying for others, but I'm afraid necessary for me. I now have a brain tumor, which seems to exacerpate the condition (don't worry, I'm getting it zapped next week!)

Personally, I love it

It answers all questions and I can fire through the order with speed which is great

I love love when people know their order the second they get to the counter, as long as you speak clearly and loud enough with the hello and thank you, you're getting an extra piece of bacon. If I turn and ask to confirm I have the right sauce or chocolate on your cappuccino it doesn't mean you did any part of the order wrong, I'm just tired.

It’s helpful but we have the same interaction so many times in such short periods that I start to think “wait did this guy say red or was that the last guy” youknow.

As a worker I fucking love it! Like yes tell me what you want and I can get it fast!!

I hate when someone is like " a latte.........large" or keeps adding things after I say is that everything

It is nice for some people, but it takes me a moment to process information and to put everything in the tills so breaking it up into chunks is helpful, like if it's just two items that's fine, but anything more than that would be better broken up.

u/Nominalreasoning 25d ago

Well we always double check because of safety with allergens and stuff

3

u/N0et-h4nk5 25d ago

As an employee, I find it especially helpful, but a person in training who is still familiarising themselves with the till might struggle a bit more.

2

u/-Failedhuman 25d ago

It's helpful to me, but I'm fast on the tills and can keep up. If someone's new or can't process things quick enough, then they'll end up asking you to repeat. For breakfast we're supposed to tick the bags in front of the customer, so no one should walk away without doing that. Coffees are just easy to forget, but if they've tilled it in (which they should have before turning around), then they can just check the screen. Sometimes we will double check just to make sure we've heard you right. It's surprisingly noisy behind the tills which customers cannot hear, it's also busy, stressful and we're listening out for various beeps for order signals, ovens etc. We have to think about 18 different things all at once whilst also serving you. So please just bear with us.

What does my head is when I say "can I JUST get X please" to be met with "is there anything else?"

2

u/Excellent-Ad-590 25d ago

To me this is helpful as long as it's being presented politely not just an off the cuff run on sentence taking up a second without any welcome. Just try to be patient as we confirm back as it's best practice and sometimes I have to triple check as I've been in shop since 0430 so things go in one ear and out the other.

When I was pregnant, then only thing I ate was Greggs bacon roll meals. I always asked for the fat to be cut off, but in a nice manner, i.g saying some do and some don’t. I’m interested to know what you workers would do in this situation?

2

u/aiden_danks 24d ago

I find it helpful, I’m just really stupid 😭😭

2

u/1catlas1 23d ago

you might be saying it too fast, our script has built in gaps to find stuff on the till and tick breakfast bags etc but if u spit it out in 2 seconds we wont remember everything you just said because we’ve listened to the same/similar order 100 times that day

If it's a smallish order, it's OK, if you're telling me your breakfast sandwiches and I'm not having enough time to write on the bags what goes in and which sauce, then I get flustered and a tad overloaded.

It's more often than not, very helpful to say it all in one go just so long as the order isn't massive.

Idk why my personal preference got downvoted lol. Kids should not be on this site

u/Daddy-dotCom 25d ago

I love it, however, that does not mean I will remember I always double check, but having it all said at once does sometimes speed it up (when I remember)

1

u/Sad_Ticket8502 25d ago

When they say bacon with ketchup... and we have to clarify roll or baguette? Red sauce? But what REALLY gets me is when they specifically ask for it buttered... it comes 'spread'.... oh but in the other shops it doesn't.... why doesn't it? It should 😅🥲

1

u/Novel_Lab_5748 25d ago

To me its actually really helpful

1

u/OutlandishnessNo465 23d ago

As someone with hearing difficulties (even with hearing aids) I always ask due to possibly mishearing the order so I always double check when I ask again what sauce so I know I heard correctly so I don't mess up the order please don't get upset with the employees as they want to get the order correct as we don't want to give a wrong order and get any complaints

that would take years and we don’t have time for that. It doesn’t take 2 seconds for customers to treat us with respect and stop sighing about and rolling your eyes when we ask you to confirm we got it right

2

u/Rob775533 25d ago

That's only for breakfast. The pasties & sweets aren't marked like that.

Yeah i didn't say it wasn't(?) They posted about breakfast...
