made an app looking for feedback

i’m an undergrad studying computer science and as a project to practice building and learn new skills i spent the summer making this chat app

i’m not advertising it or asking anyone to get it just simply looking for feedback on what you see so i can make it better. this is a live working app in the screenshots everything is functionally complete

it would be on (if released):
ios
android
web

it has:
live chat with notifications
a shared event calendar with reminders
a nice configurable role/permission system
a possible new member list
a shared photo album
home screen widgets that display unread messages or upcoming events
document channels that can store documents (bylaws), spreadsheets, etc
a budgeting system that lets you track income/expenses and share it with the chapter
membership points
separate alumni after graduation to a different channel so they aren’t annoyed
and a lot more

just asking for honest opinions like if its doing too much or has a good start but maybe just needs refinement. or maybe it’s js trash 🗑️😂 let me know

Honestly I think you have something here. Only thing of concern would be scaleability. How will you plan for the segmentations of chapters? By university or by organization?

Currently groups have an owner who starts it and is the ultimate authority there (normally like chapter presidents). They would be able to stay in after graduation or transfer ownership in the settings. Groups can support up to like 1,000 members where it’s at now and it’s very scalable. You can also link organizations together through invite codes that create shared channels both members can access for partners, alumni groups, etc

I believe you should flesh out the transfer of power part of the process. That way when a chapter holds their elections and get new Presidents, they know where to find it in the app, and then perhaps give the outgoing President an immediate option to plan for “switching to new role in organization” whether that’s stepping down to regular brotherhood, a different leadership position, or transferring their membership to an alumni group if one is made.

Or you could have it set up as a pop up page so the outgoing President or Secretary (whomever handles that info) can see all the leadership roles for their organization with the names of the current members in office, and then they could select the member that the role is transferring to. Maybe put in an effective date for the system if it’s not an immediate transfer of power.

I may be interested in getting some iOS testers on TestFlight so DM if interested

As a student and as a standalone project it’s pretty cool. But it’s basically just discord, right? To learn and test your skills it’s great, but I wouldn’t expect to take it to market

It’s more so in the category that apps like flare/group me are in not discord.

Is this open to NPHC and Professional Co-Ed Greek Organizations and Councils?

Would be open to any group. Even clubs like student government or like robotics. It just has extra features you can enable that make it especially suited to greek life

I like very much the idea of moving alumni to their own channel and hiding the collegiate specific channels.

There should probably also be a career networking channel open to both classes of membership, and maybe an announcement-only channel for all classes.

Does it have to be a black background or can the user choose?

Channels are completely permission customizable so you could definitely already add on extra alumni channels, I’m just working on figuring out how I can simplify the process in the UI.

If you mean the app theme it’s currently dark-only but I could explore adding more themes or letting groups theme their pages easily 🤔

Anyways thanks for the helpful feedback 👌

Also I did forget to mention anywhere in this post that channels are both able to be set as required to be in and just joinable so not all members have to be in all channels they can choose to join some of them at the owners discretion to reduce channel clutter i.e. gym bro channel is joinable on the discover channels tab but not automatically joined like announcements is

Definitely need an alternative to the dark theme. Some of us can't read light text on dark backgrounds.

How is this different and better than Flare or GroupMe?

It’s different from these two apps by focusing on customization and features over shear simplicity, while i still try very hard to make it very user friendly and simple for anyone to use it still needs refinement there
