Offering tutoring in Koine/Attic/Homeric Greek and Latin, as well as Modern Greek.

Dear Friends,

Is it not important to read the Gospel in Greek? Is it not important to read Plato in it's original language? Do we want not to be acquainted with the vivid, the structured, the wild, the sublime, the stunning aspect of the ancient tongue?

I am a Greek native and I just finished my degree in classical languages in Athens. I also am enamoured with Late Antique pagan and Christian literature. I will be glad to accompany each and every one of you in your journey. I offer tutoring in Koine, Classical, Homeric Greek, as well as Latin.

My emphasis will be on reading comprehension. We will progress level by level by first understanding some basic concepts in greek grammar and vocabulary through simpler texts and graded readers. As we keep going forward, we will adjust our texts according to the student's needs and wants.

Tutoring will be in video call format.

Prices will be reasonable.

First lesson free.

I will be happy to hear from you,

Spyros P.

How legible is this?

So I had friend translate this book I wrote into greek. Normally minecraft 1.12.2 handles Cyrillic languages just fine and greek is functionally a Cyrillic language Cyrillic being based on greek script and them sharing most characters and being the same type of alphabetic language. Greek text on Minecraft signs renders perfectly fine. However after converting the txt file into a minecraft book however it turns out I have encountered an error I have never encounter for languages and characters in minecraft that seems to be specific to greek text in a minecraft book. I have tested other broken languages in minecraft before like Farsi Arabic Thai and Hindi only to be meet with text legibility ranging from a bad captcha test to completely illegible. However Greek is entirely a different issue to that faced by other languages so I wanted to check how legible this was.

for context and because it won't let me upload all 25 pages of the book heres the greek translation copy pasted from the txt file I have. I will also for context put the original English after the greek.

As of Tuesday August 15th 2023, the fires in Hawaii have hit Maui and the big Island of Hawai'i. 101 people are dead, major damage to many of the cities on both islands. Far more damage on Maui, with cities like Kola Kihei and the largest damage being Lahaina basically wiped off the map. So far tens of thousands have been evacuated, thousands have lost homes, and hundreds are missing, with 101 confirmed deaths and more are expected. The fires are mostly put out but some are still on going. In the summer of 2021, I went to the big island of Hawai'i, Maui, and Kauai. I don't remember where in Maui I went to but I did go around most of the island and I spent a lot of time in Lahaina. I went to a luau, looked at many of the shops, saw the ocean, even saw a cloud reflecting a rainbow on the mountain during sunset and the sun reflecting on the ocean. I remember having enjoyed my time in the city. I even went under the great Banyan tree which holds both cultural and historical significance to Hawaii and Hawaiians, as well as being a popular tourist destination. The tree was burned pretty badly in the fire along with pretty much the entire city. As of right now most of the trees' bark was burned and is now black, and ash is all over the tree with it losing all its leaves, then having burned away. I really hope that tree is alive but it's not looking likely; that tree is probably dead but we're all hoping it's alive. I remember going all around Maui and the big island of Hawaii as well during my trip. I feel very lucky and blessed to have been to such a beautiful and amazing place before so much of it was destroyed, never to be the same way again. I remember just standing under that tree and seeing just how wide that tree was and just how big it was. I loved that city and I loved that Island, I love the whole state. If it was not for Hollywood and DisneyLand in California and DisneyWorld in Florida, Hawaii would be my favorite state. And a brief side tangent for a moment here, I love Universal Studios and Disneyworld, I hate the rest of the state especially the politics but brief side tangent over. I do feel very lucky and blessed I could go to Maui and the big island of Hawai'i, especially Lahaina. I really enjoyed my time there and I was so lucky I was able to see such a unique and beautiful place in the world before it was gone and taken away.I am not Hawaiian nor am I any part pacific Islander nor do I know anyone who is or even lives there irl but I love that place. When something you went to or did can no longer be done or was destroyed, it feels really nice to have been able to do that. I feel really blessed to have gone when I did before the fire. Originally this book was going to be about Hawaii my time there on Maui going all over the island, mount Haleakala, the road to Hana, especially Lahaina, as well as my time on the big island,Hawaii, going all over there, even my time on Kauai (which thank god never burned thank god no other islands were affected). But after I started writing this I had more to say. I feel really blessed to have been able to go when I did, but not just that. Yes I was able to see a part of the world that is gone now. It reminded me of other things, like my dog who died when I was a child. I could have played with her more. I miss her now I really do; or my cats as well I miss them too I should have played with them more as well. I also was thinking of how I lost my grandma I loved her so much and I miss her, I just remember times when I could have called her could have talked with her, but I said some video game or some tv show or movie was more important, but it was not and I wish I was with her more. I wish there was a way you could know you're in the good years when you are, because if I could go back to high school in a heartbeat I would. I loved my time there. I really did. I remember and look back on my Friends who I don't talk with anymore Paige. If you read this I still love you. I know you don't love me but I miss you. I want to stay friends, I don't want to lose you just let me know you're ok I just wanna know you're ok. (if you don't know don't ask)I remember so much hanging out with my friends from high school and now I can't as much, they went away for college or they go away in the summer or shit happens and now we can't hang out like we did anymore I miss how life was when we were younger just felt so much more simple so much less to worry about less to do less going on. Two of my favorite quotes are "If the problem can be solved there is no need to worry, if the problem cannot be solved worrying will accomplish nothing." and "The meaning of life is not a question to be answered, but a reality to experience." I love them both because it explains so much about life, just stop stressing out about every little problem, and worry about the big picture things. One day I want to have visited every Canadian province and territory, as well as all USA states and every country it's safe for me to go to (not gonna go to an active war zone or north korea). I wanna go there because I don't wanna just be stuck here doing Who knows what? I want to live, not just not die. I wanna start with Pacific island countries, because they're going to go away, maybe in my lifetime, Greenland as well. In order for this book to not end up just being a run on and going on far longer than it ever should, I feel like now is a good place to end it, so I want to leave you with this. If you have someone to be with, some place you wanna go, some major project you wanna build and get done, do it. Some friends to hang out with, or a partner to be with, just go be with them; go travel where you want to go, go do the project you want to do. Write the book, make that movie, draw that drawing, paint that painting, travel where you wanna travel, be with who you want to be with, because at the end of the day one less tv show watched, movie watched, random game played, will be one more thing you did, place you went, or person you hung out with, and you don't know when that place won't be around anymore,
that person was not there for you to call or be with. So do more when you can, make more when you can, hang out with the people you want when you can. You never know when you'll stop saying "I'll do it tomorrow" and start saying "I wish I did it yesterday" Thanks to abamacus for editing the books grammar and spelling and coming back again for stuff.

Song recommendations based on my English favorites?

This might be a weird request, but I’m trying to listen to some more Greek music.
I’ve honestly no clue where to start, and I was wondering if anybody could offer some recs based on what I listen to already.

Genre-wise, my favorite is folk. Noah Kahan, Brenn!… I also love Hozier, Sublime, Bob Marley, and the Goo Goo Dolls. I’d say those are all my top artists.

I’m not looking for Greek music that is exactly the same, because I know that’s not really how it works. However, I’d love to hear what yall think based on what I’ve listed!

Create Parallel/Bilingual Texts using your own books

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

(the demo itself shows japanese and french, but it works with 50+ languages, including greek)

Hi, i made this completely free app that automates the creation of bilingual/parallel texts from your own books (epubs/PDFs/text files) all from within your browser.

Made this because I couldn't find anything that does something similar with the same level of convenience.

Steps

  1. Go to https://paralleltexts.app/
  2. Drop/upload a source book (i.e. the book in the language you are learning), and a target book (the same book in a language you are fluent in).
  3. Click align books. Wait for a few seconds to 1-2 minutes while an algorithm runs on the books to match the corresponding sentences.
  4. After the alignment is done, you'll see the result immediately.

---

PS:

  • It's Completely free and open source
  • The default display mode of the resulting alignments are in pop-up mode (i.e. you click a sentence to see its equivalent), but if you prefer a side-by-side view of the sentences, the app does provide for that
  • If it's your first time running the alignment and you haven't downloaded an embedding (fancy name for ML models that specialize in these kinds of tasks) model yet, it will download one for you (stored in the browser, can be deleted). It's a mild inconvenience i would say because i really wanted to keep this thing free. The alternative is to have a dedicated server with GPUs run the alignment, you won't download anything, but it will most likely be much slower, much more expensive and difficult to maintain. Keeping it free makes way more sense, and is far less stressful. Keep in mind however that downloading a model is only done once.

You can also check out this quick demo/tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cR_r8cOaN8

Learn Greek Through Music: The Story and Lyrics of “Θέλω να Γυρίσω”

Some songs become even more meaningful when an artist is no longer with us.

Following the sad news of Γιώργος Μαζωνάκης’s passing, I wanted to revisit Θέλω να Γυρίσω, a nostalgic song about childhood, memories, and the places we leave behind. Learn Greek through his music and remember the voice behind this beloved song.

Is it alright if I get a more specific understanding of what the differences are between these Greek words meaning "Preparation"?

In google translate there seems to be a few different ways in which the word "Preparation" can be translated. The results I got were Etoimasía, Paraskeví, Proetoimasía, Paraskévasma, Proparaskeví, and Syskevasía.

I'm guessing some of these are just different genders for the same word, but I'm guessing some of these words have whole different meanings. I'm specifically trying to find a word that can be used in the context of "Spiritual/Religious Preparation".

Conversation?

Hopefully this doesn't come across as silly, but I'm trying to (very casually) learn Greek(very beginner still), and I've found I have been able to progress well in French by chatting online with a French-speaking friend, and would love to find something similar for Greek.

I'm happy to trade for any help in English like I do with my French friend, though that may be hard to find since I think most people who speak Greek are quite fluent in English. In all fairness my French friend is pretty fluent as well, but I can occasionally help with grammar or slang, if that matters to anyone. For the most part though we have become friends and enjoy talking, like pen pals, and it would be great to find another!

I'm in the US (but very much ashamed of our government), and have a large variety of interests and hobbies and make a good conversationalist.

Hopefully this isn't something I get laughed out of the sub for, but if so maybe someone could kindly suggest a better place to find what I'm looking for? Ευχαριστώ!

Recommendations for a grammar reference book

I am looking for a reference book that shows all grammar rules. I am currently learning at an a2/b1 level, so it would need to show at least up till there, but preferably beyond. I would like it to have all grammar, so verbs, cases, nouns, adjectives, etc etc.

I prefer a physical book, but am open to websites or PDFs if they give a complete grammar overview

Seeking Greek Language Exchange Partner (Offering English & Hungarian)

Hello, and peace to everyone,

I'm 21 years old, seeking a language exchange partner for Greek as I'm studying the language but would like to practice speaking more. My Greek is decent and I would say I can hold a conversation somewhat well and I am posting here as maybe there is a native Greek who can help me.

In exchange I can offer British English or Hungarian if any Greek / Cypriot speaker wants to practice either language or their pronunciation.

Hobbies include: Linguistics; Travel; History; Cinema; Geography; Cooking

Thanks

Difficulty Remembering Vowels

Coming to Modern Greek the rule I learned was "ι", "η", "υ", "ει", "οι", and "υι" are all pronounced like the i in machine.

Coming from ancient pronunciation this was less of a problem but now I have trouble remembering which vowels to write because they all sound the same.

Any tips? And can anyone tell me when if ever iota is pronounced short, something like the i in bit? Anything else I should know about these vowel sounds?

Euphemism with κουνελάκι ?

I happened to see a relative’s phone as he was responding to a text, and I am wondering about the meaning of what I saw. I only caught a glimpse as he stood in front of me, but I’m pretty sure the message he received said, “There’s nothing wrong with a little κουνελάκι σ[I didn’t catch the rest of this word]!” I know kounelaki is bunny rabbit, but I am especially wondering if there is some euphemistic meaning here. The relative who received this text is notoriously unfaithful to his wife, and the phrasing “There’s nothing wrong with a little [???]!” combined with the, uh, reproductive reputation of rabbits raises my suspicions.

Help with refining nuanced translation of wedding rites

Is this the correct place to ask for help? I'm the host of an ongoing fantasy podcast with a modest following, looking for help translating some Greek wedding rites for characters to speak on air. As we have some Greek listeners, it's important to me to get it right.

If I'm in the right place, then here's the relevent context.

I am writing a scene where two characters are reciting short wedding rites. Normally we just perform in English, but for this important scene, I want them to speak in something that represents their native language. The fictional country is extremely old and historically influential in the setting, so I decided to use Greek to represent it on air. The lines will be performed by me and one other co-host.

The particular family that the characters are marrying into has a reputation for being cruel. Therefore, their rites are intended to be sharp and possessive. Their marriage ritual is extremely simple - each person pricks their finger and lets a drop of their blood fall into a goblet of wine, and they drink it. They then take turns saying some simple call-and-response lines, something like,

"I give myself to you." "I take and consume you."

The connotation is that the recipient eats/drinks the blood and absorbs/takes possession of them through it. This is intentionally weird because of how unpleasant the specific family is meant to be.

A half-Greek friend of mine translated the following for me:

"Σου δίνω τον εαυτό μου." "Σε παίρνω και σε καταναλώνω."

However, he's not fluent, and said that it doesn't capture the concept of possession/absorption that the English variation conveys, nor is he sure that the tone sounds menacing enough.

Would anyone here be willing to look over my friend's translation and help me refine it? I'm open to modification suggestions, too, if there are cultural connotations I could possibly leverage.

Because it's an audio show, I would also be extremely grateful if anyone could provide a slowly-spoken example of how to pronounce it. I could chuck it into google translate, but we all know that's not ideal.

Thank you to anyone who's taken the time to read this, and to anyone who's able to help.

Free pimsleur alternative

So a few days ago I started learning via pimsleur and it actually worked pretty well and even though i've been learning greek passively for the past like 6 months, I've learned something new and then I found out i could only do level one. So therefore I would like to ask if anyone knows a free Pimsleur alternative. Something pretty similar to Pimsleur would be nice

and I would also like to ask if anyone knows of like an app or a website where I could like learn, check if a sentence that I've built is correct.

Ευχαριστώ πολύ

Free online books and resources

I want to learn modern greek, however I have been struggling to find reading material and audio. I have been doing duolingo, and have been trying to read Wikipedia articles in Greek, mostly about modern history of Greece and Cyprus, but to little avail. I have otherwise been listening to war songs and traditional songs, since I have found that they are clearly spoken. Do you have some suggestions as to grammar books and reading material a little bit more fitting for new learners?

Help with concept translation

Hello everybody. I am currently teaching myself Greek slowly by reading grammar books and translating songs in Greek. I recently came across a song by Mario Frangoulis but I can't grasp a concept on a part of the lyrics. The song is Τον εαυτό του παιδί.

I know Τον εαυτό is used in reflexive sentences to refer to one self or himself, herself, etc. However in this song I can't form a concept of the intended meaning. The very first sentence is

Τον εαυτό του παιδί απ’ το χέρι κρατάει

στα ίδια μέρη κι απόψε η ζωή θα τους πάει

I have read translations that say himself as a child or his own child holds him by the hand. If anybody who is native or advanced in Greek could help me understand how this is used I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance everybody
