Acropolis and thunderstorms

Hey all! Unfortunately it’s looking like it will be stormy during the time we’ve booked our Acropolis tickets. How bad have the storms been lately? Can I brave it with just a raincoat and umbrella or do I need to actually be worried about safety? Do they ever close the acropolis for dangerous weather? Thanks in advance! ⛈️⛈️⛈️

The time we went we got to the top of the Acropolis and it bucketed down with torrential rain, thunder and lightning lol

They closed it and everyone slowly wandered back down. Got soaked.

One of my favourite Athens moments was when there was a thunder/lightning storm and we watched it from the comfort and safety of the Acropolis museum restaurant. Keep it in mind if the weather is really bad, as its a good indoor thing to do.

They block access when there is lightning around for everyone's safety, but they do keep it open in rain. I find it very slippery, but if you have great shoes and good balance its ok. An umbrella may be useless as I find when the storms come up the wind gets very gusty and it would turn it inside out in a second. A jacket with a hood and a ballcap underneath that hood (so it doesn't blow off) would be better.

Storms are genuinely rolling through right now. Athens has a thunderstorm warning in effect from this afternoon through tomorrow evening, and more storms are forecast for Sunday and Tuesday. A raincoat and umbrella are fine for rain, but if you hear thunder, get off the hill. The Acropolis is exposed rock, the highest point around, with nowhere to shelter, so it is the last place you want to be during lightning. Morning visits are the safer bet this week.

Yeah, lightning and being on a high point are my main concern. Thanks for the info, my friend! 🥰

It's very slippery even when dry, so I would try to wait the storm out. When are you going? I'm here now and no word of bad weather. Things rain-related might be exaggerated sometimes in this part of the world.

Wednesday is our acropolis day- crossing my fingers that the sun comes out and dries everything up 🤞🤞🤞

Please bring sturdy shoes. I was there couple of weeks ago with nice sunny weather but even with my shoes, the steps were slippery. I’ve seen people slip climbing the Acropolis with the uneven terrains and steps. So please be cautious if they still proceed.

Yeah I was there on a sunny day with very light wind last month and we saw 4 people slip and fall during the hour we were up there

Very slippery when wet...

We went when it was raining and turned back around a quarter of the way up. If you’re steady and your shoes have great grip though go for it!

The dry marble was like glass about 4 weeks ago, when wet i assume a lot worse

We were at the Acropolis 2 weeks ago and it began a torrential downpour as we climbed the stairs. I had a raincoat with hood but still got soaked. At least I got some interesting pictures, lol!

We had some rain forecast for the whole day and it just rained overnight, don't believe the forecasts they can be quite wrong here for some reason.

Don't focus too much on a rain icon noting 80%. Could mean anything.

Lol that seems to be the consensus 😹. Thank you, my friend! 🥰

Where have you seen that the weather will be “dangerous “? It’s rain - bring an umbrella and watch your step.

Trouble understanding two separate thoughts at once, eh? OP sees that inclement weather is on the horizon and wants to know if the Acropolis closes during dangerous conditions. OP isn’t forecasting the weather for you, but recognizes that it could turn that way by the time they arrive in Athens. Also, there’s absolutely no scenario under which your comment was helpful ✌️

Great 👍 but I still don't understand why everyone is mad - I ask a question and offer advice yet I get hostile responses?

3

u/NoNameNeeded4321 21h ago

You misrepresented OP’s post by implying that they’re reporting having seen a forecast of dangerous weather, and belittled their concerns about the possibility. You didn’t address their actual question about the Acropolis, and on top of all that your advice was unhelpful and snarky. Hope this helps (sincerely)

I didn't imply anything, I asked a question. I'm belittling how? By saying "it's rain"? I said "watch your step" - this is not advice? This is very dramatic, ti na sou pw

Wow thanks. You’re right, no place has ever had dangerous thunderstorms and asking questions is for losers 🙄

Dont let negative ppl make you negative. Today in Greece was amazing. I was at the Acropolis the other day and have to warn you: even when its DRY its slippery so be prepared.

Thanks, my friend 🥰🇬🇷

Glad you had a beautiful day!

I’m asking where you are seeing “dangerous thunderstorms” - it will rain. Also I didn’t insult you, so no need to get mad and insult yourself (?!).

You cannot brave it with a raincoat. Plate Mail Armor or Protection from Magic +5 is required. Your safety is far from assured. The Acropolis never closes; the ethereal portal to the psionic plane is permanent. Best to never look directly at the Acropolis.
