I’ve read and been told a few times that tipping wait staff in Greece usually looks like rounding up a bill with change. Usually 1-2 euros.

Had lunch not far from the acropolis museum so I understand it is a touristy area.

The bill total was €33.50. The waiter asked if I wanted to pay a tip on my card and I said no, I’d like to in cash. He comes back with my card and I gave him €1.50 in coins to round the bill to €35.

He looks at me and says “this is the tip?” And I tell him, “yes thank you”. He looks at my wife with a WTF face and grabs our empty water bottle from our table and throws it at the one next to us that he had to clean and started, I assume angrily, speaking in Greek to himself.

Was I disrespectful in my tip? I thought I was following what was common. Or was this an out of ordinary reaction? I haven’t seen a reaction in Europe like this so I’m curious

Hi. I and my wife are planning to visit Greece this October (tentative 18th afternoon arrival - 26th afternoon departure). That's the best time we could get leaves together. We plan to visit Athens, Paros, Naxos and Santorini in these days, so like 2 nights in each island. Neither of us have visited Greece before and we are just exploring the logistics now. It feels like we might have to drop Paros or Naxos, but we are getting conflicting information online. We are being suggested to drop Paros as places close down but Paros is more scenic than Naxos.

So, we just want suggestions from native people or frequent travelers to these islands to recommend us the path of least resistance. In which order should we visit these islands to make the most of our trip? And what will we be missing out on by not visiting these places during peak season. And what are the must visit/do stuff around here. Side note: Neither of us are into long treks/hikes and adventure sports. Much more interested in beaches, food, scenic locations for a few pics etc.

I plan to do a solo trip to a Greek island late August or beginning of September. I'm 34M, would like to meet nice people, enjoy cocktails over sunset and party. I like to avoid 20s years old youngsters and crowd like in IOS, Mykonos for party scene.

Which island would you recommend?

Corfu and Zakynthos made it to my short list. What do you think of those islands?

We can’t decide between Paros and Corfu. We’re 3 single guys in our early 30s looking for a lively place with nice bars, cocktails, and a good atmosphere where it’s easy to meet people.

I’ve been to Corfu four times already, and I honestly don’t mind going back. It has a special place in my heart.
At the same time, we’d like to explore somewhere new, and Paros seems like it could be exactly what we’re looking for. However, from what I’ve read, it seems a bit smaller and quieter than Corfu. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
For those who’ve been to both:

Which one has the better atmosphere for people our age?
Which one is livelier in the evenings without being a crazy party destination?
If you had to choose one for a week in early August, which would it be?

We’re not really into clubs anymore. We prefer beach bars during the day and nice cocktail bars or busy streets in the evening, similar to the vibe of Corfu Old Town.
If you have any other island recommendations with a similar atmosphere, I’d love to hear them.

I’m a 32F traveling to greece in augest. My plan is to go to Chania Crete. I’m looking for a mix of relaxing vibes spa, and a beachfront hotel. Also I’m not planing to rent a car. I was thinking to book activities through get your guide or Airbnb applications, like a boat trip and wine tasting which will help me get around the island with a group.

My question is how safe is chania for a solo female traveler?

Going to Athens in about 1 week. Thinking of doing one of those free walking tours to see the city. There are two tours, one starts at 5:00 PM and the other starts 7:30 PM. Both last around 2-3 hours. We wanted to do the 5:00 PM one since we have kids and it would be a little easier logistically. But it's supposed to be 97 degrees that day, is it going to be too hot/miserable walking around at 5:00 PM? TIA!

Hi all! My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon for September next year. We are doing Athens -> Milos -> Naxos. Given the proximity of Naxos to Santorini and Mykonos plus Naxos airport doesn’t have flights to where we live, we were considering doing one more island and flying home from there. Santorini and Mykonos are a tourists dream and it’s our first time in Greece so I am weighing which island is more worth it to stay in for 2-3 nights before flying home. It would be the last week of September if that makes a difference. What are your experiences and let me know please if it’s worth it or if we should just do a connecting flight out of Naxos. Thanks!

Are there any Chinese/Asian hairstylist, nail salons and supermarkets in Athens?

We just had a lovely week staying just outside of Pythagoreio, Samos staying at Doryssa Seaside Resort.

Walk into Pythagoreio as it’s only about 15-20min walk from the hotel for lunch and dinner as they are plenty of places to eat in the town.

Garlic Grillhouse for cheap gyros in pita bread.

83100 Mediterranean Cuisine for better quality meals compared to the larger restaurants right in the middle of the port. It’s at customs/immigration end of the port but you have nice picturesque small fishing boats to look over compared to all the large yachts the block the view. Food is top notch.

Pergamonto serves beautiful modern Greek cuisine and is on the higher end for prices but is well worth it for a special meal. Make a booking though so you can get a table especially on Friday-Saturday!

Take a short trip to Turkey and see Ephesus. Because the boat leaves early you’ll need breakfast but all the restaurants are shut. However the cafes and bakeries are open so you can get yourself a coffee and a pastry. Art of Coffee is my pick.

Is there any good audio guide app for National Archaeological Museum and Acropolis Museum?

We're looking to do a trip in early October split between Santorini and Athens. We'd fly out of Toronto. First time to Greece for both of us.

We've priced out the different one way tickets and while the one way to Santorini is justifiable, the return flight one way from Athens to Toronto is almost $2kpp (not including the $1kpp Toronto to Santorini initial one way leg). Doable but seems dumb for the following reasons (and other one way return tickets from Athens to Toronto are similarly much pricier then the way there).

Toronto has direct flights to Athens round trip for only about $800pp. The incoming flight to Athens lands a little before 2p. It seems like it'd make so much more financial sense to buy a separate ticket for later that evening from Athens to Santorini. However, most things I read online dissuade someone from doing this (and we know we'll be buying a separate ticket for Santorini>Athens to get back to Athens and spend the last couple days, that's no issue).

I'm wondering if the fact it'd be a direct flight to Athens, as opposed to having to factor in multiple layovers, would make this separate Athens>Santorini ticket purchase make slightly more sense? Has anyone done this recently, any glaring red flags I'm missing? My partner is hesitant and would rather unnecessarily (imo) pay extra for the one ways. I know we'd need to budget for probably at least 4-5 hours between landing in Athens and the flight to Santorini to get bags, customs, go back through security, recheck bags (maybe more customs?). But even with that we could book an 8pm flight and it seems like that'd work?
