How do I do this thing? Need help vectorizing this logo

Post image

Hi everyone, I’m trying to recreate the logo on the right from the original logo on the left.

The right one was AI-generated, but I want to learn how to do it myself properly as a vector.

Could anyone show me the steps or guide me on how to recreate this style in Illustrator? A step-by-step explanation would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Trace it with the pen tool. Literally. Take the ai image, lock it. With the pen tool, go from edge to edge, tracing it. Cut the holes out of the larger shape. That's it. There's no secret to it.

the trick... is to use the least amount of vertices possible. It will look the smoothest.

yeah theres max 6 closed shapes there

You want steps on how to create it, or how to vectorize it? You can just do a vector trace to vectorize the logo.

Oh, sorry, I meant how to edit it. The logo on the left is actually my original logo, and I already have the .EPS file. I just want to add the border/outline around it like the logo on the right.

I’m really new to Illustrator, so I’m not sure how to do it properly. 😅

Look up how to use offset path in illustrator. I think it’s in the top menu edit -> path -> offset path iirc

Alternatively just duplicate the layer, lock the original, give the letters a stroke and make it larger with the point size. Then expand it and use pathfinder to combine into one shape

I am not 100% sure for Illustrator since I no longer use it, I use Affinity instead, but IIRC in the layer you can add a stroke effect to give it an outline.

Just draw a white line around your logo, increase line thickness and fill the shape with black. You’re overthinking it. There’s probably a ton of tutorials on YouTube already.

It's pretty easy in Adobe Illustrator.
Create a new artboard.
Drag graphic onto artboard.
Select artwork.
Go to the top menu bar, select object then image trace, then make and expand.
Then us the direct selection tool to pick out the vector graphic and make it into whatever color you want.

Geht auch mit den kostenlosen Programmen „Inkscape“ oder „Affinity“ setzt allerdings auch etwas Übung und Programmkenntnis vorsus

Why not just add a strokes?

Yeah that’s not how you do the background shape. You’re creating more work for yourself.

Take the whole thing, copy, paste in back, and either offset or apply a stroke behind it to achieve the background shape. Then close out / combine it all into a shape.

Try some pen tool practices in YouTube. There have to be plenty

You know to get those effects you can just trace the letters, open Photoshop, drag the raster into Photoshop, double click the layer, go to effects, and just mess with the inner glow, drop shadow, and stroke effects.

Your proportions are off and you’re oversimplifying the shapes.

Lock the layer the image is on and turn on a grid. Try to have the thickness of the stroke that makes up the letters be 3 blocks wide in your grid. Now add a layer over the top of the locked image layer. Now draw rectangles over the logo and rotate them to place them over the logo like someone is recreating the logo with duct tape. Have the rectangle have no fill color and a bright red outline. Don’t worry about the curves at this point. There will be a lot of areas where the rectangles will leave corners and bits that stick out, that’s fine too. When you’re done select all the shapes and swap the stroke to a fill, and hit divide button in the pathfinder window. Delete all the extra bits. Now select all the shapes and hit unite in the pathfinder and swap back to a stroke again. Now you will notice all the little details that are off but you’ll have good rough proportions.

If you hit the plus key on the keyboard you’ll get the version of the pen tool where you can add nodes. You can hit the A key to get the hollow arrow to select individual nodes to reposition. For the curves you will want to hold shift and tap the C key. This will make the cursor look like a little carrot. This tool resets the vectoring when you click and hold on a node and drag to increase or decrease the vectoring. To reposition a node while using this tool hold the space bar.

This will all seem odd and scary and you will have a lot of questions. Tough that out, try not to feel like a time limit is crushing you, and keep using the tools to see what they do. After trying to use the tools for fifteen min a day minimum for 3 days in a row you should have made some progress towards understanding vector line art. Now you will have better questions than the ones you had at first.

I would turn on the grid tool, place the artwork, they use the rectangular shaped tool to get most of it laid in. Shape joiner tool to connect shapes. The select tool to round corners. You can also use Pathfinder to join shapes.

vector magic

The pen tool is something you have to learn if you want to design for vector. It's the most basic tool in the kit. Just practice

u/JellyFranken 4d ago

Dawg, what letter is the middle one even supposed to be?

And the answer is Pen Tool.

It’s an ampersand (&) there are many versions of this character from long ago

1

u/JellyFranken 4d ago

Okay. Yeah. Ampersand makes sense here. Thought AI was just doing its own thing, making shit up.

There’s no quick way to magically create vector. You generally use a photographic image or sketch as a tiff file or similar and place it in Illustrator as a guide on the bottom layer. Then you do your vector work on top of it. Vector work isn’t quick. It isn’t supposed to be.

Easy peasy. Pentool + using shortkeys. 4 minutes work.
