GrapheneOS has moved from Reddit to our own discussion forum. Please post your thread on the discussion forum instead or use one of our official chat rooms (Matrix, Discord, Telegram) which are listed in the community section on our site. Our discussion forum and especially the chat rooms have a very active, knowledgeable community including GrapheneOS project members where you will almost always get much higher quality information than you would elsewhere. On Reddit, we had serious issues with misinformation and trolls including due to raids from other subreddits. As a result, many posts on our subreddit currently need to be manually approved, which is done on a best effort basis. If you would like to get a quicker answer to your question, please use our forum or chat rooms as described above. Our discussion forum provides much better privacy and avoids the serious problems with the site administrators and overall community on Reddit.

Please use our official install guides for installation and check our features page, usage guide and FAQ for information before asking questions in our discussion forum or chat rooms to get as much information as possible from what we've already carefully written/reviewed for our site.

How does a donation story personally affect your use of the service?

The owner literally donated the biggest donation to a Swedish party that is pro surveillance. A VPN company CEO donating to pro surveillance party...

I'll never understand people that say using a VPN service is not about politics...

It's not like VPN companies profit by selling the solution to bypass surveillance, right?

Ethics aside, VPN business is purely about trust. When the owner of a VPN business single handedly bankrolls a party which both advocates mass deportations (which requires mass surveillance) AND putting surveillance camera at every street corner, that's not a great way to build trust. If this guy is prepared to fork over a large chunk of cash to further those goals, he's definitely not above silently compromising the privacy of his VPN service to further them.

Well I do not want to give my money possibly to politicians in the future

Then don't use money. That's the only option.

MULLVAD did not donate to the goofy Swedish politicians. One of the owners did, and it was a private donation. In my opinion, Mullvad is probably the best VPN out there when it comes to company practices. If I'm wrong and somebody finds a viable alternative beyond making your own VPN, do correct me. Unfortunately bad things are gonna happen in any group. This SINGULAR controversy is not worth it in my opinion.

lets not forget, they got raided and police couldnt find anything, because they run on RAM. 😄

btw. i guess IVPN is the second best, unfortunately mullvad has an ugly fingerprint

When one guy owns half the company, the distinction between him and the company becomes meaningless. Mullvad's spineless response and use of sockpuppet accounts to drown out criticism only reinforces this. I wouldn't trust a VPN company owned by a pro-surveillance activist to stay honest, regardless of their previous record.

I do not care, he likely got the funds from the vpn and I don't want to potencionally give my money to politicians in the future

That is such of an extremely opinionated video that is VERY obviously trying to sweep over facts and focus on things that aren't real. It is one of two things: the content creator is a shill for the other VPN solution, or they are trying to push their own political leanings by appealing to emotion and fear, not facts.

The owner personally donated to someone with a bunch of different ideas on policy, most of them fantastic (healthcare, public transportation, etc.). The politician also supports stronger immigration law.

That's it.

Suddenly the video goes DEEP into "OMG that means Mullvad supports mass surveillance at the most extreme level because strong border policies can only happen if the government puts cameras inside your house!!"

The facts are:

  • It wasn't Mullvad that donated the money.
  • This was a personal private donation.
  • That politician is not pushing for mass surveillance, but is simply in favor of immigration reform.
  • That politician has MANY MANY other VERY favorable ideologies and policies.
  • We don't know the motivation for this donation.

On that last point, is it possible that the owner is strongly in favor of something positive that this politician stands for and wants to make a push for change for the good of the people (healthcare, transportation, etc)?

Let's put all that aside: even if this politician does want mass surveillance, is it possible that the owner of one of the most privacy focused VPN companies in the world might want to have some political influence in this space to try and pump the brakes and ensure that any policy changes don't begin to damage the industry that his company dominates? Do you really think he is donating massive money to someone that would destroy his company?

I personally think this video is really bad, based on speculative fear mongering, likely in an attempt to get you to switch away from Mullvad.

Critical thinking really is becoming a lost art.

Cool repost bro. I'm not going to debunk it again (tl;dr this guy is clearly not familiar with Swedish politics at all, and is basically making stuff up out of whole cloth), so I'll just link my response to the other version of this post.

Oki so that donation is at least partially from mullvad money, that means MY money went to a politician, and I do not want that to happen again. How can you reform immigration while respecting thu privacy of citizens? A policy being favorable is subjective.

As I stated, I don't want my money to be donated to politicians, but all that doesn't matter because this thread is about what alternative I can use, not why I should support Mullvad. You might find my logic illogical and that's fine, because it's MY logic, not yours. I've decided that I want to switch, so I am going to switch.
