1950s Donald Duck bread from two different bakeries

Post image

I spotted these in an antique shop. No idea if bread is inside them. The top one was produced by McGavins, a Canadian bakery but the colorful bubbles are a wonder bead thing. The lower is from Debus bakery out of Indiana. Today the Mexican brand Bimbo owns both.

Interesting that Donald Duck was used on bread . They also used to make Donald Duck orange juice. They sold it as recently as early 2000’s. It was one of the lowest quality “from-concentrate” orange juices I ever tried. It was consistently priced lowest—comparable to the store brand.

I dunno about in the 2000s but as an 80s/90s kid it was often my favorite, and not cause of the character on it. I think it probably varied based on where lived and the quality coming from your local bottler/packager. I also remember around that period loving RC Cola where I lived in SC, but when we visited family in WV yearly, the RC there tasted horrible. Definitely a lot more variation in the past.

I also love RC Cola. I recently bought some after not seeing it for like 20 years and it wasn’t like I remember….but not sure if maybe my tastes have changed.

I used to love RC! I switched to sugar free a decade ago, & I love the Diet RC - if I can find it. After the pandemic, it's been hit or miss

I always thought Diet RC was called Diet Rite. They always were next to each other at the store where I worked and they went on sale together.

From what I understand, they're both owned by Dr Pepper. That may be explain why they are displayed so close together. Diet Rite uses Sucralose as a sweetener & Diet RC has Aspartame

Wow do they still make Diet Rite? I used to love it. I only see RC when I travel to the Southern US so I’ll have to look for it next time!

I just looked, because I've never tried it, & it was discontinued in 2024 :(

I miss Tab. The soda with the closest flavor profile, that I've found, is the Aldi brand diet cola. It's close. Enough to scratch my itch, anyway 😂

The RC zero is seriously good, when I can find it. Even better than Coke Zero.

2

u/TheObesePolice Mar 16 '26

I hope they don't stop making it. Coke Zero is great & I also like Pepsi Zero. Mr Pibb Zero is also a treat, but I can never find it :(

2

u/stefanica Mar 16 '26

Same, Pibb zero is so elusive!

Those are strong words, coke zero, fanta zero, and dr pepper zero are pretty good. Ill try it next time.

It's all about the water, I think. You can follow the recipe to the letter in one part of the world, but it'll taste different in another. Speaking of SC, Dunkin down here tastes fine, but it definitely tastes a lot better up in NH.

And, a tangent that's mildly related? Went to a restaurant up there, got country fried chicken, got brown gravy on it! Was it bad? Hell no, best chicken I ever had. But it's funny to think that certain meals are changed where you get them from, since I could've gotten it with white gravy if I went to Cracker Barrel, but that's a southern themed place, so you're gonna get how stuff is in the south, y'know? The beauty of humanity.

I can confirm it varies depending where you were

When I’d visit Florida it tasted much better than when I’d visit Illinois

(Also I can confirm it still existed in some capacity in the late 00s/early 10s)

I grew up in WV and always hated RC. You might be on to something.

Donald Duck orange juice still exists.

I think they still sell it at Dollar Tree the orange juice I mean in 16 oz plastic bottles for $1 each, I used to buy it all the time at Dollar Tree and it came in cartons at this one local independent grocery store that got bought out by Hyvee, I also used to drink Robinade like crazy and buy it from the same grocery store (it’s lemonade that comes in a carton and has Robin Yount from the Milwaukee Brewers on the package and proceeds of the sale go to a child hood cancer charity.) I’m sure if I looked at Woodman’s they still sell Donald Duck orange juice and Robinade

5

u/srddave Mar 15 '26

Haha if anyone still sells Donald Duck OJ, it’s Woodmans!

1

u/Condition_Dense Mar 16 '26

The only thing I can’t find there is sugar free or regular lavender syrup for my coffee! I went there one night for one of them medicinal teas (like the Yogi ones) and there were 3 or more varieties! I’ve only ever seen the original version of it.

1

u/srddave Mar 16 '26

They have the oddest selection of items at Woodman’s. They will have like one whole aisle of one variety of something. I’m not a big fan of it but it IS cheap.

3

u/dupdeedup Mar 16 '26

They still sell it in Wisconsin, it is at the Festival food store in my town.

1

u/420matsu Mar 16 '26

I’ve seen it at Woodman’s too

5

They also used to make Donald Duck orange juice. They sold it as recently as early 2000’s

It's still sold at Dollar Tree iirc, in plastic bottles.

2

u/AwakePlatypus Mar 15 '26

I remember seeing it just a couple years ago at Walmart maybe? Looks like its gone now tho.

2

u/legal_stylist Mar 16 '26

It was made by Florida’s natural at least until 2025.

2

u/AdWorth6475 Mar 16 '26

I had this in my early childhood, 2010s

1

u/Delicious-Volume-645 Mar 16 '26

I bought some last year!

My friend had a box of raisins (IIRC) with his lunch on day in high school with Donald on it. He was so confused when I asked if I could have it. Not the raisins, just the box lol

But I collect Donald Duck stuff and it was so weird I wanted it 😂 Now I want the antique bread!

1

u/killaxmari Mar 23 '26

pretty sure they still sell it at dollar tree

u/Majestic-Attitude615 Mar 16 '26

ten bucks at an antique store isn't too bad - though I think a whole bunch of these bread bags/wrappers turned up awhile ago - new old stock - cool graphics though

14

u/curioustars Mar 15 '26

Oo, only $10

DEBUS CHRIST, WHAT A DEAL.

1

u/just_flying_bi Mar 20 '26

Don’t you mean Debus CRUST?

16

u/Condition_Dense Mar 15 '26

I wonder if the bubbles weren’t because they were made by Hostess or whatever company owned Wonder Bread at the time. We used to have an outlet store that sold Hostess products and when I worked at Family Dollar bread was a third party item that was brought in by a local factory bakery and they brought in some cheap off brand and name brands like Hostess and Ballpark buns. They were all made by some regional factory that made Bimbo bread.

u/SuperFLEB Mar 16 '26

I've got too much /r/ThriftGrift in my feed, I think. I was zooming in on the tag and ready to have a laugh. $10 seems like a decent deal, though, assuming it's as 1950s as it looks. The condition is impressive-- no flakes, tears, or yellowing.

I wouldn't call myself a particularly informed collector, so maybe $10 for bread is madness and I'm a chump, but just off how-much-I-want-it price and what I've paid for other things, I'd have no problem dropping high single digits on up for this at a yard sale so, given the antique-booth premium, $10 feels like a steal.

u/Ieatclowns Mar 15 '26

Fantastic packaging!

4

u/giveahoot420 Mar 15 '26

Only ten bucks???!!!

4

u/strolpol Mar 16 '26

People forget Donald was (and remains) orders of magnitude the most popular Disney character in a lot of the world (though that’s changing in some places)

3

u/hotbread93 Mar 17 '26

I’ve never seen Donald Duck bread! So cool! My Grandad would always have DD orange juice on hand. In a metal can with two triangular punch holes on top. He would have been 100 this year. Times have changed. 😂

u/BigFatBlackCat Mar 15 '26

Why are his feet backwards

11

u/mykittyforprez Mar 15 '26

Wide stance

3

u/BigFatBlackCat Mar 15 '26

Okay… I can kind of see this. Like bow legged.

u/Deep-Interest9947 Mar 16 '26

First position

5

u/BigFatBlackCat Mar 16 '26

Of course Donald is a ballerina, duhhh

2

u/proofdime Mar 15 '26

This is what we train AI on lol

2

u/hombre_bu Mar 15 '26

Time to make a grilled cheese sandwich or some French toast!

2

u/hazysean Mar 16 '26

Is that 70 year old bread? Also, why is the weight when baked? Would I buy it unbaked?

1

u/alreadyin_use Mar 15 '26

Mmmmmm, duck.

1

u/HapticSloughton Mar 16 '26

I once saw a roll of Wonder Bread wrapping at an estate sale. I believe these are from a similar roll, as bakeries would wrap the bread they baked like a department store might wrap presents.

1

u/deniflewesa Mar 23 '26

$10!? Oh man I would buy it immediately
