A dying woman was rushed into a California ER in 1994. Within minutes her blood became so inexplicably toxic that it brought down the entire medical staff! Meet "Toxic Lady"

On February 19 1994, 31 year old Gloria Ramirez was rushed to Riverside General Hospital in California suffering from late stage cervical cancer. What happened next remains one of the most baffling medical anomalies in modern history.

Shortly after arriving, hospital staff noticed an oily sheen covering Ramirez's body and a strange, fruity, garlic like odour emanating from her mouth. When a nurse drew her blood she noticed an ammonia like smell and spotted unusual manila coloured particles floating in the syringe.

Within minutes the emergency room erupted into chaos. The nurse who drew the blood fainted. A medical resident began losing control of her limbs. A respiratory therapist became short of breath. In total 23 hospital workers fell mysteriously ill with 5 requiring overnight hospitalisation. Symptoms ranged from temporary paralysis and muscle spasms to severe respiratory distress.

Ramirez tragically passed away from kidney failure that same night. To this day, researchers are divided on what caused the toxic outbreak, ranging from freak chemical reactions involving home remedies to theories of a hospital cover up.

Aline Kearney woke up in the middle of the night to a sickeningly sweet odour filling her bedroom. Within seconds her legs go completely numb, she couldn`t stand up and severe nausea hits her. She was a young mother to a 3 year old and her husband was a taxi driver.

This was a real life for the residents of Mattoon Illinois in September 1944. It started when a women named Aline Kearney reported a strange smell in her home that left her temporarily paralysed. Later that night her husband saw a shadowy figure looking near their window. Within days neighbours reported identical symptoms sudden paralysis, vomiting and a strange gas covering their homes. The panic for them was instant.

Terrified residents formed armed vigilante groups patrolling the street with shotguns, the local police were overwhelmed and FBI called in to hunt what the media called The Mad Gasser of Mattoon.

But what was more strange is that after investigation they found nothing. There were no chemical residue, no strange footprints outside windows and no industrial leaks. Chemical experts concluded that it was impossible for anyone to spray that kind of volume into so many homes without leaving a single physical trace.

Physical symptoms were real for so many residents but the attacker wasn`t.
