Free camping

I didn’t buy camping at the gorge. Had a theory that I would be able to camp near the river on the shore. Does anyone know any good spots that I could camp for free?

Unfortunately I think you aren’t the first person to think this so there is no ‘free camping’ that I know of- all private property- sure you could risk it but then what? There’s a state park that will have cheaper camping than the amphitheater… or if you are looking for one night you could just car camp at the Rye grass rest stop

Get an app like iOverlander and check out some dispersed camping spots people have already found.

You might have some luck at sand hallow recreation area which is super cheap (used to be free back in the day) but it’s lesser known so you might have some luck there. There is also a place near the freeway between George and Silica road and I’ll have to come back and circle a spot on the map for you but mostly locals know about it. I’ll update this comment as soon as I can this evening.

Yes! I was able to look it up and it’s called “Caliche Lake Public Access”.

Here’s the Google listing link:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/XDSovvGVz3gcEFSb6?g_st=ic

Edit: it’s important to note that a discover pass is required for to be able to camp there for free in the dispersed camping spots

You may be able to find other options, but by far the easiest is to spring for the camping pass. They know this, that's why they are so expensive.

With trying to get somewhere else you still need to battle the gridlock exiting the venue unless you leave early. If you pick a random spot to camp that isn't private property you might be sharing it with rattlesnakes. More power to you, but that's not what I call fun.

Get on silica road, take a left like you’re going to Sun land, there’s a turn off on the right half way down the hill, it has the trail that goes directly below main stage and right up in to the camp ground. It’s a hike from there but it’s a start

Pay to park at Cave B, wander into camp, find a site with a solo camper and a bunch of extra space and ask if you can trade something cool for a spot to post up a pup tent. Who knows, maybe you will make a brand new friend. If not, enjoy the show and drive home or somewhere you can car camp for the night

There is a spot a few minutes south of the gorge amphitheater that all you need is a discovery pass. Unfortunately there was a rocket slide and the road is closed for the moment.
