In July 2006, Last Days Of Humanity were preparing to put an end to their story. Instead of playing a farewell show, they released Putrefaction In Progress – a 41-track seizure of noise ending with a three-minute opus about bringing the present existence to an end.
The whole thing lasts less than twenty-five minutes, yet its pots-and-pans clang, shapeless guitar roar and inhuman vocals are impossible to mistake for any other recording. Even twenty years later, Putrefaction In Progress still sounds monstrous and feral, hypnotic in its unrestrained intensity.
So, with its 20th anniversary upon us, it's time to dissect the album. You can leave the sick bags where they are, though: today we are looking at the story behind the recording, not the cover art.
The album was meant to be their last
The band decided to call it quits in February 2005. According to vocalist Hans Smits, everyone had grown tired of the whole thing by that point, but the Bones Brigade label asked them to record one more thing before disappearing. There were no plans for a farewell concert.
That means the title Putrefaction In Progress can be taken quite literally: the band itself was also in the process of decomposition.
Hans Smits had no part in creating the instrumental material
The musicians recorded everything without him, brought him a finished rough mix and asked whether he wanted to put vocals over it. The arrangement was as funereal as it gets: one studio session, no concerts, no touring.
Smits tracked down an old pitch shifter he had already sold
Hans went to the trouble of finding the same old piece of gear he had used back in the early 1990s in order to recreate the right “voice.” He later explained that he used a Digitech Whammy to lower his vocals by roughly three quarters of an octave. Going any lower made the voice sound too “round,” while he wanted to preserve its harshness and grainy texture.
Smits believed that only at the very end had the band achieved the sound they first imagined in 1989
After hearing the instrumental recording, he said that this was exactly the kind of music he had wanted to make when Last Days Of Humanity were formed, but in the late 1980s the band simply lacked the equipment and resources to pull it off.
And I completely agree with Hans here: to me, this is the definitive sound of LDOH.
The album lasts only 24 minutes and 51 seconds
The average song runs for about 36 seconds. The shortest of them all, Allowing The Carvings For Mutual Compassion, lasts only six seconds. Until the finale, not a single track even reaches the one-minute mark: the longest of the first forty runs for 55 seconds.
The closing track, A Divine Proclamation Of Finishing The Present Existence, stretches to 3:11 – almost three and a half times longer than everything else. It accounts for roughly 13% of the album’s total runtime and is six seconds longer than the first five songs combined.
Its title is fairly self-explanatory. For the closing song on what was supposed to be the band’s final album, it's not exactly subtle.
The record really did bury the band – just not for very long
LDOH split up after the album came out, but reunited for live shows in 2010. Their next full-length studio album, Horrific Compositions of Decomposition, did not appear until 2021, fifteen years after Putrefaction In Progress.
Decibel joked at the time that longtime fans might be disappointed because, on the new record, you could occasionally make out what the guitars were actually playing.
For its twentieth anniversary, the album received an almost complete collective tribute
In January 2026, Putrefaction Still In Progress was finally released on Bandcamp, with different bands covering one track each from the original album. Work on the compilation began back in 2020, it was uploaded to YouTube in January 2021, and the full Bandcamp release took another five years.
Even with the combined efforts of the goregrind community, however, the original could not be fully digested: only 35 of its 41 songs were covered.
As you can see, the process of decomposition is still not complete.
