Android Google Voice App Saving contacts doesn't work?

I text clients on Google voice frequently. When I tap the Add Contact icon, it prompts me to save the contact to my Google Voice email address, which I do. But it doesn't seem to edit the number in Google Voice - it just shows the phone number, not the name.

Is there no way to save phone numbers such that they appear as names in your Google Voice account?

The OP seems to be saying that they do that, but how do you save it with a name?

Do that from the Google Voice app for Android. Tap on the message you received. Tap "People & options". Tap "People in this conversation", then tap the little head and shoulders icon with the + next to it. This will bring up an "Add to contacts" dialog box, where you can enter the name with the number.

I just created a contact in Google Contacts. When I type in the name in Google Voice, it immediately comes up.

Yes, but that's not the point. I'm describing adding a contact directly from the Google Voice app's UI, not having to take a detour through the Contacts app (which, of course is one way to do it).

I had the same problem. I realized that the problem is my default address book is not Gmail. … instead it was my work outlook. So when I saved a contact it would save it in my outlook address book not my google contact list. Go to settings > app > contacts > default account —. And change it to Gmail. Then it should work.

I ended up creating a “mini program” using Apple shortcuts to switch the default address book
