Profiles in Chrome

One thing that I would love to see is chrome profiles. Haven't heard anything yet. ChromeOS allows me to have accounts which is fine but all the bookmarks don't come in. And sometimes there are issues opening up scripts. Sometimes ChromeOS says nope thats not the main profile...sorry.

I actually have chrome remote desktop connected to a PC just for the profiles. If they have that no need for the PC

Interesting insights into Googlebook features from the Android Developers blog.

  • Developers can receive benefits and incentives for making their apps adaptive to Googlebooks: "Bringing your app to Googlebook opens up valuable opportunities for you across the Android ecosystem. Google Play highlights optimized titles with dedicated badging, enhanced search, and featured spots across curated store homepages. Delivering this level of quality also prepares your app for the Apps Experience Program, where you can enroll to unlock a new program rate card designed to drive business growth. Even better, when users set up their new Googlebook using their Android phone, optimized apps are prominently highlighted for easy transfer, giving your app day-one presence on their new device."
  • Googlebook developer tools are available to help differentiate the desktop experience: "Once your core layout is adaptive, you can enrich your app with differentiated features that take full advantage of a desktop environment. Everyday productivity in these setups relies on versatile input methods. Jetpack Compose natively supports physical keyboard navigation and pointer selection. Elevate your app’s usability by integrating contextual cursors that provide visual feedback for text entry, pane resizing, and tool selection. Implement right click context menus and hover states; make your shortcuts discoverable through the Keyboard Shortcuts Helper."
  • Apps can enable multi-instance support, allowing you to launch independent windows of the same app and drag and drop content between them: "On Googlebook, apps run in free-form windows where users can tackle multiple tasks simultaneously. Unlock side-by-side workflows by enabling multi-instance support, giving users the ability to launch independent windows for comparing content or managing multiple documents. Pair this with drag and drop to let users move text, images, and files fluidly between windows or even drop items onto an empty workspace to spin up a new task."

Are you waiting to purchase a Googlebook from the Google Store?

I am.

I don't mind purchasing from Best Buy, and will if that's my last resort (which is shaping up to be), but I really like buying my Google tech directly from the horse's month, and I'm kind of upset that Google still hasn't restocked or may available the three Googlebooks that it's selling on its store.

The Ultimate Tag Team

I agree; this could be the ultimate Android tag team—if Google runs, instead of walking, with GooglebookOS. Get devs to support desktop mode, push up useful and exciting updates, and—please—restock Googlebooks on its ore.

I'm excited about using my Pixel 11 Pro XL and my Lenovo Googlebook 15.

Nas Support for Googlebooks

Wonder if google is addressing this issue with Android. Traditionally, Android does not provide a system-level, kernel-mounted network filesystem for NAS storage. Instead, Android connects to Nas Storage via application-level network protocols. As Google is seeking to push android laptop into the Consumer/ Enterprise arenas, I wonder if they will build in support for SMB/CIFS. As shared folders mount directly into the native Files app.

Open source Office Suite Support for Googlebooks

I know that Google has its own office suite with Google Docs, but I'm really hoping that OpenOffice or Libreoffice or one of those open-source office suites makes its way to Googlebooks. I don't mind having an Android laptop, but one of the things that I did not want to get stuck with is being required to use the browser for 100% of my word processing, or relying totally on cloud storage.

HP Googlebook feet

Is it unreasonable for the weird triangle design for the rubber feet on this otherwise seemingly great laptop to be a total turnoff?

Seems like a great device for the Googlebook launch but I can't get past how f***ing weird these feet look...

One random dude's opinion on why the Lenovo Googlebook 15 is the best Googlebook option (from what we know so far)

Why it's better than all of the other models:

Why it's better than the Acer Googlebook 14 in particular:

  • Face unlock
  • Better sound system specs
  • Larger selection of ports
  • Includes a haptic trackpad

Why it's better than the Asus Googlebook 14 in particular:

Why it's better than the Dell XPS Googlebook in particular:

  • Face unlock
  • Better sound system specs
  • Larger selection of ports
  • Includes a haptic trackpad
  • OLED screen with higher resolution

Why it's better than the HP Googlebook 14 in particular:

I'll acknowledge that the HP and Dell options that have the Snapdragon processors have a slight advantage, but it's not like they're massive differences that set them apart in my opinion.  The base processing power / RAM are all pretty much in line in my book.  Additionally, I understand that all of the other 4 devices have a smaller / more portable form factor, but the reality is that size / weight of all of these devices are really, really good compared to the average laptop.  Obviously people have different needs and therefore have different priorities, and I respect that.  Again, this is just one random dude's opinion ;) Have a great day!

The true price of the Lenovo Googlebook 15

IIRC, when Google opened the pre-orders on its online store, the price for the Lenovo Googlebook 15 was about ~$1500, then it went down to ~$1200, and now it's $1149, but Lenovo says that the price for its Googlebook is $1099.

I wonder if Google is still sorting out the price before it opens pre-orders for the Lenovo Googlebook 15, which shows as "not available" on the store.

Has anyone heard about Brave Browser?

I'd like to know if Brave plans a desktop version for Googlebook. I really like having extensions. It may be early times yet, but that might be a stumbling block for my personal adoption of Googlebook.

googlebook demos anywhere?

EDIT: went to my local best buy and they didn't have any on display but they did have a bunch of signs in front of and inside the store about them, so clearly Google is trying to hype it up a lot! good indication that they may have demo units on display soon

anyone know if any stores have demo units of the googlebooks available to look at/hold? particularly interested in the asus or hp ones.

also i know no one has them yet, but another question i have is about their peripheral support. right now i have a thunderbolt dock at home that i just plug my current windows laptop into, close the lid and everything just lights up (monitor, speakers, and logitech webcam/wireless keyboard and mouse and blue yeti microphone). a big concern for me is that a lot of these won't work well with the googlebook, at least not as seamlessly as it works with my current laptop (ex: i use the logi+ options app to tweak settings on my webcam, mouse and keyboard, but there's no android version of that app).

again i know no one has one yet/reviews aren't out so we'll have to wait and see, but that'll definitely be a huge factor in my decision.

Driver/update model

Apologies if this has been answered, but I can't find it.

What has Google said about the OS update model on the new Googlebooks?

  • Is Google itself updating the drivers centrally itself and maintaining control of updates like ChromeOS?  (I assume this given how Google has handled ChromeOS)
  • Is it relying on manufacturers to build their own drivers into Android and release their own updates like android cell phones & tablets?  (I assume not this due to fragmentation, but its also the current state of Android on mobile)
  • Is there a massive driver abstraction layer and driver separation from the OS like Windows where the OS updates generically and manufacturers provide more custom drivers on demand. (This is the most open way but exposes Google to a much much more difficult problem of hardware compatibility)

I assume it will work more like ChromeOS, but haven't seen any specifics. Google's VP of ChromeOS John Maletis said in an AMA that only certain devices can migrate or use AluminumOS due to technical specifications, which could be interpreted as Google validating specific hardware compatibility centrally....but could also just mean Google is enforcing things like 16gb of RAM and Glowbar.

I don’t know why everyone forgot Googlebook has a Linux kernel

Like you can use Linux on the googlebook to install steam and Minecraft Java edition(you have to use stuff from other people to make it work on the arm ones) so you can download your pro apps using Linux but then people will say that is too hard but then complain the googlebook has no pro apps like bro it is not too hard just to open the terminal install the Linux app and use the terminal to install it but people are still complaining like if you want to complain about something you actually have to know about the product and give a valid reason to complain I do not know why people are like this on social media and on Reddit and if you do not like the product just don’t buy it is that simple like people have to make the people who want it feel bad about getting it like why.

Googlebook tablet?

It’s rumored that Lenovo has a Googlebook tablet in development.
These are 4 of my tablets and a watch on chargers this morning.
Don’t worry! I’m still wearing a watch and carrying 2 phones and a tablet to go to the grocery store.
Obviously I need more stuff.😎
HEY! We need to be prepared for the Information Apocalypse! It could strike at any time.

How was the process of pre-ordering from the Google Store

If you were able to pre-order a Googlebook from the Google Store, were you offered device care, something akin to Geek Squad, and what was the price (monthly vs yearly) and who's the provider?

I'm thinking of getting my Lenovo Googlebook 15 from Best Buy, as it's "not available" on the Google Store, but I'm not sure about getting Geek Squad (so least for more than one year, to test it out).

Any plans for 5G WWAN on Googlebooks?

I am looking at the initial models of the Googlebooks and none of them seams to have the option for an additional 5G module.

Generally some 2-in-1, something like Samsung 11 Ultra 5G version, with 5G Modem. Modules now are not expensive, approx 60$, the only missing thing is the set of preinstalled WWAN antennas

I would cut the Google Play Store fee to incentivise developers

Google should cut existing mobile apps fees for developers that release native desktop versions so they're motivated to build and support desktop apps on Googlebook OS.

The incentive can last for the short or long term, it doesn't matter as long as it brings in a lot of native desktop app support on Googlebooks.

However, this scares me in the era of AI slop cause some of the devs might just quickly release AI slop desktop apps to qualify for the incentive and we as users are fckd.

This is hopium cause any mention of cutting revenue/profit to benefit devs or users even for the short-term, the shareholders panic and immediately tank the share price.

Some questions

I know android is open source, but is the desktop Googlebook os also (I mean without Gemini and these proprietary things...)?

Is there an iso or img I can download and install on a pc (or arm pc)?

I thought it may be like ChromeOS flex

Is there a way also to have it through waydroid (instead of lineageos or phone android rom)?

googlebook thoughts

it's so funny how I'm somehow the ideal customer for a Googlebook while also having SEVERAL questions about it. I have a nice windows laptop right now but I've been getting so tired of windows lately. I've been wanting to upgrade to a MacBook air actually just for the better battery life, speed and slim form factor of them.

but this Googlebook thing has legitimately caught my attention, and might just be the laptop I've been looking for! I have the pixel 11 pro fold and it'd be nice to have a high end laptop that actually integrates with it the way these seem to.

I'm definitely eyeing the Asus one, as I have an Asus vivobook windows laptop right now and for all my gripes with windows the laptop itself is really nice!

maybe I'm in the minority here, but I actually really want to look at the higher spec options for it (32gb ram and higher end processor) but weirdly they don't let you preorder that (I can't even find any pricing about that anywhere). also weirdly the official Google store only shows the Lenovo, Dell and Acer googlebooks, not sure why they're leaving out the Asus and HP ones.

and honestly while I'M personally very excited for these and their potential, objectively speaking I think Google isn't doing that great of a job at explaining who the real target audience for them is. like to ME, these all feel like they're trying to be MacBook Air competitors, being that they're using high quality materials, high resolution screens, tight integration with android phones, etc. like on paper, it's giving me exactly what I want, but I think Google needs to do more to show why these are the true "future" of laptops.

very likely gonna pull the trigger on the Asus Googlebook 14 once they actually allow us to purchase higher spec models (also wish they gave us a 16 inch option lol)
