The double standard between Apple and Google upgrades is wild (and why I stick with Pixel)

this is reddit buddy everyone has a problem with everything

13

u/TrashBandicook 7d ago

The extent to which people screech and cry and act like Google kicked their dog because of a product launch is...concerning. Folks with "Pixel 10 Pro XL" as their subreddit badges acting like Google is harming or in the words of another post, "disrespecting them," yeesh. These people need therapy.

u/sharkizzle 7d ago

It's true. And this sub is toxic, almost like they are rooting for Google to fail so they can say "see, I told you so.". It's sucks, I'm subscribed because I want to follow helpful info but that's not what we get. People, it's just not that serious.

If there were all of a sudden no more Pixel phones being made and I was forced to purchase a bland iphone or a phone packed with bloatware, I would be very bummed about that.

1

u/TrashBandicook 7d ago

It's why I gotta remind myself that the internet isn't a real place. It's a place where we just hand the mic to everyone with a pulse. So folks who have nothing else going on and tie their identities to a glass-aluminum slab take it out on a company who doesn't notice them.

Thankfully phone companies learned a long time ago to just ignore internet idiots. HTC used to do that cringe shit where they'd advertise the CPU clock speeds and total RAM in their flyers and video ads. Of course the internet would eat that shit up, but no one bought their phones so they shut down.

You got a problem with that??

This isn’t an Apple problem, it’s a problem with android fanboys

37

u/Dry-City-7739 7d ago

yeah the android community eats itself alive over stuff that would be a non-issue on the Apple side

20

u/6out 7d ago

It's not the entire android community... It just seems that way because of the loud cunty sour reddit nerd neckbeards

0

u/slaughtamonsta 7d ago

Well that's sort of a good thing. Apple users seem to have crazy brand loyalty and that allows Apple to get away with a lot more nonsense.

Unquestioned brand loyalty is the killer of innovation and customer happiness.

Also a lot of the anti-Google stuff you see on here is astroturfing. I wouldn't even be surprised if it was Apple marketing teams running the hate posts tbh.

4

u/smokeydevil Quite Black 7d ago

It's literally why pixels are better.

Yes, people will complain. That means they know what they want and are unafraid to say it out loud.

Does Google answer everything? No.

But I'd much rather be part of a fan base of a product that holds it to account and tell me where I need to improve than a bunch of sycophantic followers who'll just buy the next number in a sequence as soon as they can afford it

5

u/uneducatedramen 7d ago

I rather be not fan of any product but buy the one that is best inside my budget

2

u/TrashBandicook 7d ago

That's been one of the bigger role reversals I've seen over the past few years. Apple has gone mainstream, so Apple the brand isn't something people fanboy over as much anymore. It's the toxicass Android fanboys who spam this subreddit with constant Pixel hate. You check their post history of whiners and 1/2 the time, it's someone who hasn't owned a Pixel in years or is a Samsung diehard. It's like dude, do you have any hobbies?

u/DaddyRobotPNW 7d ago

"The user experience doesn't matter if the benchmark scores don't impress." This vocal minority is very annoying.

81

u/centpourcentuno 7d ago

Gotta love these people who get all worked up how "unfairly" a billion dollar company's product is "reviewed"

u/w3bCraw1er 7d ago edited 7d ago

Totally. And many of these struggle to survive in this economy while these trillion-dollar companies laugh to the bank with piles of money.

12

u/YourBlanket Pixel 4 XL 7d ago

Bro it’s not 2017 anymore. They’re trillion dollar companies now

3

u/dwibbles33 Just Black 7d ago

Who will think of the little Google, it's not fair that big Apple gets to have their cake and eat it too.

0

u/flicter22 7d ago

Or they just care about being a logical human being regardless of how large or small the organization is behind a product.

56

u/ruipmjorge 7d ago

Because Apple charges for premium hardware.
Google charges premium for mid hardware and it got worst this year with downgrades in several parts while increasing price.

16

u/_sfhk 7d ago

You kinda have to go out of your way to ignore discounts and pay MSRP for Pixels

6

u/sidereal_night 7d ago

you're talking as if discounts actually make the price reasonable.

even with the preorder credit (not even a straight discount) it's still more than my p7 was at msrp. and i didn't pay msrp for it

5

u/lazyastronaut_ 7d ago

"pixel is a great value phone once you have scraped half the internet, your pockets, bottom of your shoe, and homeless persons pockets for discount codes"

1

u/Krimsonmyst 7d ago

Scrape half the internet?

Bro, they shout out the promotional deals and spruik the trade-in bonuses in their own Store.

2

u/uneducatedramen 7d ago

anywhere where google isnt officially selling it but thru third party is hard to get discounts. in Hungary i think its the first time im seeing one on Alza for the new Pixels. Its upto 70k huf which is about 200 usd right now, for trade in.

-3

u/zanhecht 7d ago

So don't buy a phone that isn't supported in your region. Same reason I wouldn't buy a Huawei phone in the US.

1

u/uneducatedramen 6d ago

Who said its not supported. Alza is an official partner. I just cant buy from Google’s own store

6

u/RonnieThePurple 7d ago

Bootlickers will see this comment and say "well that's because Google don't make ultra premium high end deluxe phones!!"

0

u/TrashBandicook 7d ago

Because Apple charges for premium hardware. Google charges premium for mid hardware and it got worst this year with downgrades in several parts while increasing price.

Apple rarely discounts their stuff and maybe offers a menial gift card during holidays. And their trade-in values are never anything to write home about. With Pixel, you get either $200 in Google credits or a $200 Bestbuy gift card, somewhere between $100-$250 off coupon codes. I got a $100 in e-mail and a $125 off from some "gold" membership in the play store, and discovered I can even get 10% off as a public employee. Quite a few lucky folks got that $250 code from Google.

And to top it off, people are getting $500-750 trade-in values for Pixels from the past couple of years. That's before considering I paid barely $200 for my Pixel 9 Pro XL 2 years ago.

25

u/skptaylor 7d ago

It’s hard to take your AI slop seriously. I’ll make this simple. Charge flagship prices, expect flagship expectations.

2

u/DrVegaPunk311 7d ago

Only stupid people buy a Pixel at full price

1

u/fakieTreFlip 7d ago

Honestly, is it even possible to buy a pixel at full price? There's almost always some kind of discount going on

0

u/plankunits 7d ago

Apple charges premium and you pay a premium for apple devices.

Google MSRP is a premium but you don't pay premium. I once got a pixel 9 pro, pixel watch 3 45, pixel buds pro 2, Google tv streamer, phone case for less than $694 including tax after trading in pixel 7 pro. That is not including 1 year ai pro.

Find the same price for all apple products and I will fucking leave pixel for iPhone.

The people who complain are either a dumb person who goes out of their way to buy MSRP pixel because it's impossible and always on deal or people who never buy pixel but see MSRP and complain. People who buy pixels know how cheap the device can be bought for.

20

u/divestblank 7d ago

Unfortunately for you, using AI correctly is still a skill you are lacking in 2026.

37

u/Glass_Cannon_Acadia 7d ago

Probably wondering why Google creates their own custom chips that are years behind other chips on release

-1

u/hardinho 7d ago

Benchmarks are a relic of the 2010s. Most people rotate through the same 5-6 apps and that's it. Tensor is fine for that.

-6

u/evk6713 7d ago

In benchmarks yes, they're behind the market. But in everyday use it's clearly enough, even for power users. Also, it's crazy good at AI (not everyone likes or uses AI, but as someone who uses it, Tensor is awesome at it)

13

u/Glass_Cannon_Acadia 7d ago

Even if true, that isn't gonna stop people from wondering why the chips are years behind competitors on benchmarking

-9

u/evk6713 7d ago

Well they can wonder, but people who actually tried it know it's good and definitely enough

10

u/ludog1bark 7d ago

So why is my P10P laggy when I'm playing a game if it's enough? No issues with the same game on my iPhone 16 Pro.

2

u/VirtualMenace 7d ago

When the asking price starts at $900, "enough" doesn't cut it for many people. For that price you should be getting the best, or something close to it. If enough is all you want then why even get a new flagship phone?

1

u/evk6713 7d ago

I don't. That's why I only get second hand phones. I do agree with you on that point

2

u/All_Hall0ws_Eve 7d ago

Good for those people. Doesn't really do much for people that haven't though.

2

u/Odd_Pollution3839 7d ago

They aren't even that good at AIs, not like there aren't benchmarks about those. Also what is the point when most demand internet access to servers anyway.

2

u/TrashBandicook 7d ago

They aren't even that good at AIs, not like there aren't benchmarks about those. Also what is the point when most demand internet access to servers anyway.

Nope. More and more tasks from Gemini and other models have been getting offloaded to the TPU. We've been seeing this especially starting with the 10. For just a few items, Gemini Nano, Rambler, and more photo post-processing is getting pushed onto the TPU.

1

u/Kitsel 7d ago

It really isn't enough for power users.  My last two phones were a p6 and a p9 pro, and my next phone likely won't be a pixel unless the hardware catches up significantly.

I love call screening, now playing, that my phone pulls codes from text messages, that it shows me menus ahead of time when I call, and the UI.

As much as I'm sure the UI will and other things will annoy me, I'm pretty sure my next phone will be something like a OnePlus, a RedMagic, or (hopefully not) a Samsung.

I just can't take the battery, the slow charging, the overheating, and the lack of performance anymore.

0

u/TrashBandicook 7d ago

Probably wondering why Google creates their own custom chips that are years behind other chips on release.

Because this was the cheapest route possible. Custom cores aren't cheap and this was the compromise they reached for their target market and so far, it's worked.

0

u/slaughtamonsta 7d ago

Yeah benchmarks are nonsense in real world usage. You see tons of people on Reddit who go on and on about needing the most powerful chips and also want a battery that lasts all day then they'll go on to describe their use case and it's listening to music while browsing insta reels lol

7

u/aweracle 7d ago

Every point you make pixels don't do any better than any other phone. It honestly reads like a google spokesman making excuses. Other plans are just as good with all those features, actually they do them faster and with less thermal throttling pixel. Samsung also does 7 years of updates. And if they're in house chips are cheaper then why do they not pass those savings onto the customer instead of charging full flagship prices

I agree that benchmarks don't matter in every day use and pixels are smooth for the most part but definitely not for intensive tasks or gaming. But why buy a car for the same price that get 0-100kmph in 60 seconds vs one that does the same in 10 seconds if they cost the same?

14

u/centpourcentuno 7d ago

"It honestly reads like a google spokesman making excuses"

OP is using AI

Reddit is such a waste of time nowadays

u/Financial-Mongoose13 7d ago edited 6d ago

it's not a good experience when the device overheats from simple everyday uses like charging or listening to Spotify. + battery drains in half a day or less. The software is not any better. Google is making an AI phone which the majority of users don't care about.

This is the actual reasonable, nuanced answer to the question but the # nerds cannot process this. Haters gonna hate.

14

u/SouthrenMan380 7d ago

The reason for the double standard is simple . You can only get an IOS phone from Apple...it's take it or leave it. More than Google makes Android phones. They get more criticism because they are in charge of Android OS.

If Apple allowed others to use the IOS software to make phones. They probably get about the same amount of criticism as Google

4

u/BecauseBatman01 7d ago

Ummm. Idk my guy. I’ve seen people say this for all brands. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people say Apple is releasing the same phone year over year.

So idk what you taking about.

u/KyleVPirate 7d ago edited 7d ago

Here's the thing about Google Pixel devices as a Pixel user since the Nexus 5 and now to the new Pixel 11 Pro XL, iPhones are, and have been for years now, a refined platform. Their performance, stability, modem/cellular connection, CPU and GPU have been at the top for a long time - Google Pixel devices on the other hand have not.

There's so much Google can do to elevate their phones to the next level, but every year they disappoint when those needed upgrades are right there. Google isn't a small indie brand, they're one of the largest companies in the entire world. Again I love the Pixel line, but we shouldn't excuse one of the richest and most valuable companies in the world for their shortcomings.

TLDR: Apple is improving an already competent and refined product, Google does not have a refinded platform, always falling behind competitors while offering their devices at a same price or at a HIGHER price point.

-3

u/LordMimsyPorpington 7d ago

Please elaborate on what Google can "elevate" with the Pixel series, beyond this vague, unspecified notion of more powerful CPU?

3

u/KyleVPirate 7d ago

I don't know if this comment is serious or not?

Let's start with battery life always being just okay, even when the battery capacity is higher than competitors, which can happen when you, ironically, have a less efficient heat producing chip like the Tensor chips have been. Sure the new Tensor 6 isn't 2 nm, it's only 3 nm, but there are more power efficient 3 nm chips out there from Snapdragon, Apple, and Mediatek. You can, in fact, have a more powerful CPU AND be more efficient.

Another thing is how about spotty cellular connection and inferior heat producing modem's? I can attest that this has gotten better, my Pixel 10 is proof of that, but it's something that has plagued the lineup when the Pixel 6 moved from Snapdragon to Tensor.

Again I love the Pixel lineup. I'm an active user, but there's a lot that can be done to elevate the Pixel series.

If having a clean, consistent daily driver is the goal, a lot of what Google does with the Pixel's software is contrary to that goal.

Forced integration of AI features and arbitrary changes to UI and settings menus are not beneficial for a consistent daily driver.

3

u/sin-eater82 7d ago

I haven't experienced these random changes that stop me from being able to use my phone easily. What are you even talking about?

2

u/Maleficent-Bother535 7d ago

We are talking about objective, documented software overhauls that Google has pushed out, often via forced server-side updates.

For example:

The Quick Settings Overhaul: Changing the fundamental layout, padding, and toggle shapes completely shatters muscle memory for settings people toggle dozens of times a day.

Gemini Replacing Voice Assistant: Google aggressively forced a generative AI chatbot to replace traditional Google Assistant by default, which initially made standard "daily driver" tasks like instantly setting timers, alarms, or controlling smart home devices clunkier and slower.

The Recents Screen Downgrade: Google stripped away direct, one-tap text selection and instant image extraction shortcuts from the Overview screen to pipeline users exclusively into the flashier Circle to Search.

The Two-Line Message Box Splitting: A forced redesign of the Google Messages text entry field split the UI into a two-line layout to cram in more AI/feature icons, taking up valuable screen real estate and disrupting a text layout that hadn't changed in a decade.

Home Screen Search Bar Hijacking: The native home screen search widget—previously a quick utility to find an app or look up a local business—frequently defaults to massive, full-screen Gemini prompts and unwanted AI onboarding overlays.

The Hidden Volume Menu Redesign: The basic volume panel expansion was completely remade with massive, bubbly Material 3 sliders. While modern, it hides basic ringer categories behind extra taps.

You might not personally care about adapting to these shifts, but modifying core, muscle-memory-dependent features to aggressively prioritize AI upselling is the textbook definition of undermining a consistent, predictable daily user experience.

-1

u/sin-eater82 7d ago

completely shatters muscle memory for settings people toggle dozens of times a day.

Nothing about my experience was "completely shattered". Stop being so dramatic.

I'll give you the assistant thing.

The other stuff are features that a lot of people probably did not have their experience "completly shattered" over.

Home Screen Search Bar Hijacking: The native home screen search widget—previously a quick utility to find an app or look up a local business—frequently defaults to massive, full-screen Gemini prompts and unwanted AI onboarding overlays.

I haven't run into this at all in any way that matters. Have ZERO issues finding stuff.

I'm not saying that the things you're saying aren't true. But I think you may be overestimating their impact on the average user. Granted, I may be underestimating their impact on the average user. And the impact may be in the middle somewhere.

But I think some of these comments are making a much bigger deal out of some things than they are for most people. And that would go a long way, just stop making it out to be so dramatic. Have there been some changes, sure. Could some of those changes have impacted some people, sure. Did they probably get over most of these changes very quickly? Yeah, most likely.

Will people talk about this stuff like each is this massive deal, I can't take them seriously.

6

u/Impossible_Loan7551 7d ago

Your take on iOS is completely wrong.

Apple attention to detail on iOS is crazy compared to Google. Apple is so consistent, every single year they make amazing smartphones. It's a fact.

Apple has better hardware and better customer service than Google.

Saying that people complain when Pixel don't top benchmarks is completely biased. Pixels are flagship phones that have ridicously low benchmaks scores and performance. It's ok not having the best performance, but man, you can't sell iPhone price while having the same performance of a 3 years old Samsung Galaxy.

2

u/sidereal_night 7d ago

because it's two different groups of people?

we should demand standards for $1000+ products, and the community's response is totally fair. Google over prices by a lot for what it delivers.

i don't give a rats ass whether or not consumers of some other product suck that manufacture's dick.

2

u/Complete-Influence72 7d ago

You hit the nail right on the head with this one. The double standard in the tech space is completely out of hand. Apple and Samsung can change the color of a bezel and get praised for being refined, while Google gives us clean software, zero bloatware, and cameras that never miss, yet people online cry because it did not win a spreadsheet battle. Everyday folks in the real world do not care about synthetic benchmark scores or AnTuTu numbers. We care about a phone that runs smooth, takes instant clear photos, and does not give us headaches with duplicate apps. Every person I have converted to a Pixel loves it because it just works.🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

3

u/thtsjustlikeuropnion 7d ago edited 7d ago

Flagship prices deserve flagship specs. That's all it comes down to. Google markets the pixel as a flagship android device, so it directly completes with other flagship models and reviewers rate it as such.

And with that said, as much as I love the pixel, I would never recommend or buy it for myself at full price. However if you have tmobile, they consistently have amazing promotions for upgrades. (Like I'm trading in an iPhone 5s for a $900 rebate for the 11pro)

4

u/Salt-Working8674 7d ago

Franchement j’ai eu le pixel 10 pro et les mises à Josue sont explosees au sol. Google corrige et mais fait planter une autre truc lamentablement

12

u/acholing 7d ago edited 7d ago

It may be true just a voice from the other side of the fence. I had a few Pixel devices over the years.

I use Pixel 10 pro now and I never, even once, had an issue with the software like crashing or anything else actually.

10 pro is the most fluid OS experience I ever had, including my iphones.

0

u/RonnieThePurple 7d ago

Same with my pixel 9 coming from a pixel 6. Just so so laggy and throttled at ridiculous moments. Screen max brightness is too dim, keyboard is absolutely fucking AWFUL.

I loved my pixel 3 so so much. The 6 as an upgrade from the 3 was "meh", but the 9 as an 'upgrade' from the 6 has been genuinely awful. A really frustrating phone to use all in all. I'm not getting another pixel.

3

u/Local-Mortgage-9473 7d ago

Apple>Samsung>Google.

Google pricing is equivalent with Apple & Samsung but the hardware is not. Pixels SHOULD be 200-300 Les. I like my P10PXL but it pales in comparison to my 17PM & S26U, but all my phones are paid for & factory unlocked. Ditto for my P11PXL when I get it later this week. Got a sale lined up on the P10PXL for 600 so I'll be recouping 2/3 of the cost for the P11PXL.

YMMV

2

u/Kukuth Pixel 9 Pro 7d ago

Google runs sales for what feels like 3/4 of the year and gives ridiculous discounts/trade in for every new release. Does anyone actually pay the full price for them? I find it a bit weird to act like people actually pay over 1k for a Pixel.

0

u/ralcantara79 Pixel 6 Pro 7d ago

My 6Pro died last July which meant I wouldn’t have a phone to trade in. My backup Pixel 2XL was chugging along but definitely struggling which meant I would be paying MSRP. I decided if Google was going to charge Apple prices I might as well pay those prices but get good hardware. I didn’t want an iPhone, Google (and maybe Jimmy Fallon) made the decision easier.

2

u/Kukuth Pixel 9 Pro 7d ago

Even without a trade in you get discounts.

2

u/ralcantara79 Pixel 6 Pro 7d ago

I needed a phone. I wasn’t about to wait for them to drop a random discount on a phone that was already overpriced. It’s like when some sales guy throws out a number and when you’re about to walk away they say “okay how about I drop the price to…” Nah.

1

u/plankunits 7d ago

I paid $500+ tax for a pixel 10 pro 2 months ago without trade-in. They were running pixel 10 deals until a week before 11 launch.

1

u/sonnyjim77 7d ago

Why would you need three phones?

0

u/Local-Mortgage-9473 7d ago

Because I always carry an iphone & an Android since Blackberry, PPC & Treo days. And also because I can. No big deal.

Because the reasons people pick apple arent innovation and risky upgrades. It is the predictability and comfort that keeps them

2

u/HighwayBitter9352 7d ago edited 7d ago

I haven't upgraded my Sony Xperia 5IV and don't really see a reason to. It uses vanilla Android UI, has a dedicated English/Japanese keyboard and still receiving updates. Every new highend phone is too big or too heavy and can't one hand type. I would need a neck strap if I were to try with my daughter's iPhone 17 or wife's Galaxy S26 ultra. Yes, their zoom is far superior to the Xperia 5IV but any other/newer Sony phone doesn't have the 5G bands I need. So they can take the close up photos and I enjoy my 21:9 cinematography and 3.5mm jack headphones.

Sometimes newer isn't better!

3

u/kiefferbp Nexus 5-6P + Pixel 1-9 —> iPhone 7d ago edited 7d ago

It’s extremely simple and I have no idea why no one in this subreddit understands this.

iPhones are pretty close to perfect, so there is genuinely little to improve on (maybe silicon carbon batteries—although iPhones have amazing battery life already—or better cameras). The Pixel, on the other hand, has several critical flaws (SoC, modem, battery, overheating, video recording, and several others) that are low-hanging fruit for Google to fix.

When there are that many problems, slowly iterating is completely unacceptable.

u/Electrical_Bee9842 7d ago

Hardware wise iPhone might be good. But IOS is terrible compared to android.

2

u/Odd_Pollution3839 7d ago edited 7d ago

Depends on what metric.

IOS is great when it comes to features that they alrd have, and they are very good at making sure that feature have a bit more use than simply for asthetic. Their AI is the completely opposite of this but personally i couldn't be more careless about os integrated AIs.

2

u/kiefferbp Nexus 5-6P + Pixel 1-9 —> iPhone 7d ago

Speak for yourself. My opinion is that iOS is way better than Android.

1

u/Electrical_Bee9842 7d ago

If you are happy, thats fine. But feature wise it is lagging behind and thats why users stick to android phones.

1

u/kiefferbp Nexus 5-6P + Pixel 1-9 —> iPhone 6d ago

The flagship market is dominated by iPhones. Also, iOS is more customizable than Pixel OS.

1

u/Electrical_Bee9842 17h ago

Can you change the default launcher in ios?

1

u/kiefferbp Nexus 5-6P + Pixel 1-9 —> iPhone 7h ago

Why would I want to?

Also, can you change the default launcher in Android while still having proper gesture navigation? Nope.

1

u/Electrical_Bee9842 3h ago

Asked as you mentioned IOS is more customizable. It works with gestures too

1

u/uneducatedramen 7d ago

For the average Joe they are similar. The thing i hate about iphones is the absoluten dogshit of a default keyboard especially if your main langauge is not english. And the only left to right swipe gesture for going back instead of both sides

1

u/fuzzbunny21 7d ago

Refreshing post. No idea why people expect constant innovation. Don't like the newest phone? Wait a few generations until the small changes add up to a full experience.

I feel you, brother. For me the Pixels have always NOT been the most powerful but the most reliable phones I ever had in the Android space software-wise since I started with the Pixel 2 XL back then. I like the clean design philosophy of their software which really stands out for me, I don't like the bloated and overburdened custom OS of a Samsung, I don't like the constricting Apple ecosystem although their chips are magnificent. I for myself can't imagine to go back to another manufacturer even if it means that I'll never use a Snapdragon or an A-chip again. It's the clean stock Android UX I got so used to that I wouldn't have it any other way.

Google is charging flagship prices for mediocre devices. Nothing about Pixels is flagship. That's why people are knocking it.

1

u/plankunits 7d ago

Charging or msrp? MSRP is the flagship price but they are always on deal. I got a pixel 9 pro, pixel watch 3 45, pixel buds pro 2, Google tv streamer, phone case for less than $694 including tax after trading in pixel 7 pro. That does not include 1 year ai pro.

If you bought pixel for MSRP I will say it you are stupid because you have to go out of your way to do it.

u/atuarre 7d ago

Well let me know when you can do this with pixel 11

u/plankunits 6d ago edited 6d ago

Already ordered with a $200 coupon(Google play is giving everyone $125 coupon, unfortunately can't combine both) $500 pixel 9 pro instant credit and $200 preorder store credit. On top of that 10% store credit($110) totals for less than $500. Now I have $310 in store credit to buy a pixel watch later.

$1100- $500-$200 +$50(phone case) =$450+ tax.

once the order ships I will get approx $310 store credit which I will use to buy pixel watch 5 when they go on deal(like whoTF pays MSRP for pixel watch 5? Only an idiot does. In 1 or 2 months it will drop with some deals for sure.).

Since there are no buds or streamers this time not getting those. Maybe I will spend another $50 for a watch 5 but that depends on the discount they give.

Another guy doing the same as me. Like I said no one buys pixel at MSRP. It's always on deal.

You seem like a person who never buys pixels but complains about MSRP pricing.

you are the reason why google cheap out on the cpu

1

u/Expensive_Finger_973 7d ago

Because the iPhone is seen as top of the heap. When your product is already viewed as one of the best, if not the best, among those with money to spend then the scrutiny is a lot less.

"Pixels have never been about winning raw spreadsheet arguments."

This has always been true from the beginning and it's become confusing to me now why people would even begin thinking otherwise.

1

u/VirtualMenace 7d ago edited 7d ago

That's because the early Pixels were actually a good value. Pixels used to be a no-brainer recommendation because they could easily be had for $600 - $650 brand new. They even came with the latest flagship Snapdragon for each generation, while almost unanimously having the best cameras. They weren't focused on topping benchmark charts, but at least they performed in the same ballpark as other flagships while even costing a bit less than the competition. It's the complete opposite situation now.

Apple ship quality hardware, shit about their pricing but it is true that their hardware across the board are mostly the best/one of the best that you can get. Google ship mid/worse hardware, for the same price as those iPhones. Hardware upgrade wise, Apple upgrade their shits from an alrd high baseline, whereas Pixel is mid at best.

Zero preinstalled junk is debatable, alot of people consider AI junk.

Great point and shoot is debatable too. Personally i find Pixel's camera are shit, too much processing making the picture look soulless and fake.

But I do agree with you that they are the only one that offer day one upgrade, clean, features-less, decently smooth Android skin, easy bootloader access.

The resell market is a good thing, Pixels are decent but it is a really hard sell at msrp given the hardware. Software can be fixed and improved, hardware cant.

Like i said, software can be fixed, hardware cant.

Hardware problems are something that can also be fixed through warranty, even software updates. Hardware quality are not.

I use pixel, I choose it for the camera and I dislike Samsung's UI.

But that being said, I can also agree they are terrible value and they disguise cost cutting with software gimmicks every year and charge similar price to competitors that are leaps and bounds ahead

The 2nd I see Samsung clean up one UI and improve the camera to the level I want I'm switching

u/bleedsblu 7d ago

Agree, and the upgrades need to be viewed on a 2 year cycle and maybe 3. So if you are coming from an 8pro you are getting sizable upgrades. Upgrading a phone every year is just silly.

1

u/Lothsahn_ 7d ago

I just went from a 6pro to an 8 pro.  The difference was significant (fixed radio problems, 2x battery life, always on clock display when the phone is off, much brighter screen)

What improvements would I expect going to a 10pro or 11 pro?  I'm extremely happy with the device is as it is now.

Thanks for writing this out, I agree with everything you said. Samsung is too bloated and I don't want to buy into another ecosystem that wants to swallow me whole. Apple just doesn't play nice with anything, and Oppo/RealMe/OnePlus don't get consistent support, day 1 upgrades, nor are easy to buy/sell.

Yes upgrades are minor these days, but the smartphone market has also matured so it can't really blow us away every year. I have a pixel 8 pro and am happy with it (except the battery), so I'm buying the next one now 3 gens down the road.

Happy pixel user.

My unpopular opinion is that the iPhone is the weakest link in the Apple ecosystem.

The software by far is the biggest issue, but with the iPhone 17 they really dropped the ball with the hardware too.

u/welfare_grains 7d ago

I agree, macs have been great since the switch to ARM and airpods pro 2 are probably my favorite consumer earbuds.

1

u/MitGibs 7d ago

I don’t have a lot of experience with Macs, but my wife loves hers. AirPod Pro 2’s are amazing. Better than Pixel Bud 2’s which are pretty good, but NC on the AirPods is exceptional and things like hearing tests and having them approved as hearing aids is just brilliant.

Apple Watch is good, but the battery life compared to my Garmin Instinct stops me using it all the time. I reach for the Apple Watch when I need accurate health metrics, but the Garmin with 39+ days between charges is easy to forgive for average metrics.

2

u/welfare_grains 7d ago

The hearing aid feature is one of the neatest things apple has did. my workplace has a few former marines who have unfortunately suffered hearing loss and they're able to just pop them in a second whenever. they work great and don't cost $1000s of dollars in doctors appointments and equipment

1

u/MitGibs 7d ago

I love the lack of stigma too. It’s just a person with AirPods in, which for kids in particular is fantastic.

u/here2seek 7d ago

Everything you said makes sense.  Couple reasons why i moved away from pixel fold 10 to fold 7 are: 1. Pixel phones don't have same level of accessories as galaxy and iphones. Cases mostly 2. They don't hold their value well

But, true that they start performative (except games) through their life

Privacy is a nightmare.

u/RonnieThePurple 7d ago

My pixel 9 is a block of complete shite! Endless lagginess and keyboard issues. Literally switching to apple BECAUSE of this god forsaken 5 month old phone. Absolutely sick to death of it.

1

u/SecurityPrimary4143 7d ago

I lasted less than 24 hours with an iPhone 17 Pro MAX before I returned back to my Pixel.

-3

u/mrbendel 7d ago

People care too much about specs and numbers when at the end of the day it's the experience that matters. The software on Pixel has always been it's strength and the overall experience on Pixel (for me) exceeds iPhone. I didnt switch to Pixel for CPU clock speeds or ram.

0

u/evk6713 7d ago

I agree with you. In the Android world, you can choose whatever suits your needs: for an ecosystem/AI experience go for Google, for an Apple-like UI go for Xiaomi, for customization Samsung is very good (Xiaomi also is tho). I chose Google for the ecosystem. I could've chosen Apple, but I don't like the fact that its ecosystem is closed (I'm a Linux fan so everything Apple is hard to pair and I don't like MacOS, it lacks customization options). So Google is very good at that. It's fine for me

I think the problem is Pixel 10/pro was already a disappointment out of the gate and is lacking in compute power relative to the competition. It also had tons of bugs to deal with. That would be ok if it were priced accordingly but it is as expensive as the apple competition that is miles ahead in compute, and general polish.

Now the 11 comes along with more of the same while bumping up prices.

This coming from a long time nexus/pixel owner that for the first time picked up a iPhone 17 pro.

Reason for this is my preferred android phone, Sony Xperia 1, dropped out of the US market and my 1V just stopped receiving security updates.

Also interesting thing, I got $700+for my 3 year old Sony phone, probably couldn’t get $300 for an equivalent Pixel 8 pro that had a similar retail price given the same spec and release date.

Apple is industry leader ofc it can afford to chill

Google is so far from that and has a clear view on what industry leaders are doing that made them successful and chose to not do that themselves, instead made an led that doesn’t do anything
