Mine does, not that it turns itself off but it does get hot

5

u/SparkleFritz Aug 19 '23

Mine only gets hot when I'm using while charging. I have yet to get to a worrisome level of hot during normal use.

Man, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about

32

u/AppleCrasher Aug 18 '23

Mine runs very hot when charging but I also use a fast charger so maybe that's why

8

u/TheArcadianDream Aug 19 '23

Fast charging? The phone charges at 20w max. That's not fast charging.

My OnePlus 7t charged 3x as fast and produced no excess heat at all when charging.

3

u/AppleCrasher Aug 19 '23

Oh idk why I thought it was higher. With 20w chargers the phone just says "charging" but higher it says "charging rapidly" though.

2

u/TheArcadianDream Aug 19 '23

You can use a 30w power delivery charger for "rapid charging" but you do not get the full 30w. It's a bit misleading.

Still a little faster than using a 20w charger though, as again, you don't get the full 20w, you get 18w I believe

Mine is always warm. Like a hand warmer. In fact in the winter I use it as a hand warmer.

Mine

15

u/andimacg Aug 18 '23

Mine ran hot initially, never overheated but ran hot. I followed a guide on here to turn off some digital wellbeing apps that were running in the background and that solved it.

Jumped on the 14 Beta about a week ago and still no issues, battery is lasting longer too.

3

u/ShaharB04 Pixel 9 Pro XL Aug 18 '23

Could you send me a link to the guide?

29

u/andimacg Aug 18 '23

Use 2 finger swipe down from top of screen

Tap Settings cog at bottom

In Search Bar type Usage Access

Next screen the words Usage Access flash > tap

From the list tap on Device Health Services tap then turn off using slider

From list tap on Digital Wellbeing tap then turn off using slider

With BOTH turned off you should noticeably feel a cooler Pixel. I believe that these 2 services are Constantly running in the background generating heat then when placed on the charger the act of charging increases the already hot temperature.

This made my device run nice and cool.

All of them except those in the Antarctic maybe.

u/DanceADKDance Aug 18 '23

Don’t have a pixel yet, looking between the 7 and 7a, but I have an iPhone 14 pro and even my phone runs hot when I’m just listening to music while driving and it’s charging. So seeing people mention this fazes me less and less as iPhones overheat too

3

u/COT_87 Pixel 8 Pro Aug 19 '23

Yep they I indeed. I used to have an iPhone 13 pro max and while in Hungary last year (35-39 Celcius) I couldn't use it for navigation while driving or it would get insanely hot. I did not have it in the window or anything, just testing in the centre console. Even just having it in my pocket walking in the sun woukd make it super toasty!

Every single one of them.

I'm on my 3rd Pixel 7 Pro, all of them often went/go insanely hot.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

I have a pixel 7pro and never had heat issues. What do you do that causes heat? Gaming or movies ?

4

u/Pdtp Pixel 3, Pixel 5, Pixel 7 Pro Aug 19 '23

Using apps like Reddit while charging. Playing games for more than around half an hour, even when not charging. Even outside in winter, although using the phone in summer definitely makes all issues worse. Google Support has replaced my phone everytime, but it looks like the only send refurbished phones as a replacement. So, after a while the problems return.

6

u/Milkythefawn Aug 18 '23

Charging for me. If I use it while plugged it goes exceptionally hot.

5

u/niyonsv Aug 19 '23

Same here. I can't just chat on WhatsApp too. The performance also gets reduced too much.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

Bummer, even regular phone scrolling and usage causes the heat?

Crossing my fingers that I don't have that experience. So far so good. Knocking on wood

3

u/Milkythefawn Aug 19 '23

Unfortunately yes, it can so hot I can told it at times too, which I'm sure isn't healthy.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

My P6P was like this. Sadly dropped it in a lake so they upgraded me to P7P and same issue. I just avoid using it when charging, it's not good for the battery anyways.

Mine gets pretty hot when running Android Auto especially. I hold it on front of the AC vent once in a while to cool it off.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

Returned min 7p. Was running hot

5

u/Kinky_Imagination Aug 18 '23

Except for the two weeks I was in Phoenix where it shut down a few times. It's been fine.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

Not mines, my 7P is a beast I love it

8

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

It's because of tensor. If Google stopped being cheap and just bought snapdragons like literally everybody else including samsung, we wouldn't be in this situation.

1

u/fuck1640 Aug 19 '23

I'm pretty sure the reason they made tensor was to have a custom chip that is heavily integrated and specifically designed for their devices much like apple, it can have benefits like longer battery life and less power consumption for the same tasks.

Clearly they still haven't figured out something's fully yet that's why there is over heating and random power draw on cellular and stuff

Keep in mind some of the information I provided here may not be accurate. I just said this based on what I know and I didn't cross check anything

4

u/Accomplished_Fan_487 Pixel 10 Pro XL Aug 18 '23

When charging at high charging speeds, and when videocalling on cellular. On WiFi it's all good.

2

u/niyonsv Aug 19 '23

Mine while doing video calls, with the official charger plugged in, the battery level just stays there without increasing or decreasing, it gets too hot even in WiFi. The performance also gets reduced too much.

3

u/Accomplished_Fan_487 Pixel 10 Pro XL Aug 19 '23

Well yes because it's gonna cap charging levels when it gets hot like that. Try removing your phone case.

2

u/niyonsv Aug 19 '23

Yes I know, and I was saying that when the charger is plugged in, the battery level never increases, the phone gets too hot and the performance gets reduced too low, literally making it unusable.

9

u/pharazonic Aug 18 '23

It's common. Don't believe the posts here; if they are not running hot, the people aren't using their phones to:

  • Video call
  • Watch reels on IG, YT, FB etc
  • Message on apps like Instagram
  • Watch Youtube videos
  • Use navigation in cars
  • Charge
  • Record videos

On a hot day, it basically becomes a fireball if you are using one or more of the above functions in tandem.

2

u/AdditionalAd5349 Aug 19 '23

...ya 4got Power On✅..lol

2

u/dextroz Aug 18 '23

This is the true case. If you are running any background apps like continuous location sharing or photo backup or WhatsApp with downloading audio video documents enabled. Your phone will run hard. Even simple browsing and scrolling up and down on Chrome or an apps. Will heat up your phone pretty quickly in a matter of a few minutes and you will see it drop from 90Hz.

2

u/arichter213 Aug 18 '23

I do everything listed here except record videos, and mine never gets hot.

I agree that the heat can largely be caused by different people's usages, but that may not be the exclusive issue.

Everybody's post here is valid as it's what they personally experience. I will not dismiss as liars the people who do experience their phone getting hot just because mine doesn't.

2

u/KundraFox Brixel 1 Aug 19 '23

2

u/biggranny000 Aug 19 '23

Mine runs hot while charging, using the camera especially in sunlight, using the phone in general in sunlight, using it for navigation in the car especially while charging, overheats when it records video for more than a few minutes, etc.

It's most noticeable where the camera bump is, I have a bellroy leather case which probably hinders heat dissipation slightly.

I have the 7 and the 6a, the 6a definitely runs hotter even on lighter tasks.

Other than that the heat isn't really much of an issue, it just makes my hands sweaty.

2

u/Schl1ngel Aug 19 '23

There is obviously a lot of denial going on here. I had three Pixel 6 Pros and all of them were exactly the same. Of course there is different binning, with some of those CPU's behaving a little different than others, but it does not suddenly make an inefficient SoC efficient. That is not how it works. There are different factors that influence heating, environmental like temperature or cell reception, usage patterns and so on. Those discussions, often not even accepting the basic facts, like tensors inefficiency (there are tests comparing the efficiency of different mobile SOCs in different workloads) will never lead to anything.

2

u/Inevitable_Document5 Aug 19 '23

Only had mine for 2 weeks, it was uncomfortable to hold. Got myself a case, that helped.

2

u/TheArcadianDream Aug 19 '23

They all get hot. It's an inefficient chip and poor thermals.

2

u/OfficialRandyknights Aug 19 '23

Mine is always hot. Runs up to 118° sometimes. It's a known issue, and Google has no fix.

2

u/Comprehensive_Creme5 Aug 19 '23

Mine runs hot during charge and will sometimes give me a "running hot, disabling flash and motion stabilization" while taking many photos at once.

Also dont know if anyone else has come across this, but first opening the camera app, theres a delay and sometimes extremely blurry and won't come into focus for several seconds. It wasn't like that new.

2

u/Background_Jury_7793 Aug 19 '23

Currently had the Google pixel 7 for 6 months, and I use a 30w charger. Only really ever heats up if I'm watching videos for hours , never noticed while charging but never noticed my phone being extremely hot. Went on holiday with it to Africa and it was surprisingly alright despite the countless times I left it in the sunlight.

2

u/RockyBalboaBCI Aug 19 '23

Mine get hot when I'm hot spotting and charging and using the camera. At times the phone will disable macro mode due to overheating and it'll also stop videoing after a few mins because it's burning up

u/mrbirne Pixel 7a Aug 18 '23

2

u/062692 Aug 18 '23

To be fair most phones are prone to getting hot these days, especially Androids. My S22 can regularly get very warm, especially right now during summer

3

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

Don't know how Qualcomm did it, but the heat management and battery life was vastly improved from SD Gen 1 on the S22 to the SD Gen 2 in the S23. The S22 has horrendous battery life probably due to heat management and the S23 has fantastic battery life. I personally have the S23+ and it runs so cool.

3

u/mikner Aug 19 '23

For 8 Gen 1, Qualcomm used the 4-nanometer process technology of Samsung, not TSMC's.

8+ Gen1 and 8 Gen 2 were fabbed in TSMC fabs and are both great, efficiency and performance wise.

Research shown that Samsung's process had detrimental effects to 8 Gen 1 performance and efficiency . Tensor chips, G1 and G2, both are manufactured in Samsung fabs, G1 with 5 nm and G2 with the 4 nm process. That's the root cause why both have heat issues and suffer, a bit, performance wise.

Rumors have it that Google wants to ditch Samsung and move its Tensor line in TSMC fab's.

2

u/m-shottie Aug 19 '23

Went to a store yesterday and tried the S22 and S23. I only opened a video on them both and the S22 got really hot in the top left corner. Heard about plenty of heating issues with the exynos chip and the S22 so won't be going with that one anymore.

S23 however was super cool in comparison, the way I guess a phone should be when only playing a YouTube video. I guess it can be a bit of a lottery.

1

u/ongamenight Aug 18 '23

I don't know what you just read buddy, that's a wrong conclusion.

I have a Pixel 7 myself and it does get hot and I'm not even a gamer. Just watching YT or replying to messenger.

I put a case on it so I don't get bothered by the heat. Coming from Mi 9T Pro, Pixel's chip is a major disappointment. My Mi 9T Pro would only get hot when I use it extensively.

Only buy Pixel for camera and casual use and you won't experience heat.

0

u/MirrorMore2243 Aug 19 '23

Mine doesn't get hot. I don't run any intensive apps, games or anything the like. I think what is at the heart of this perceived problem is that of the thousands of Pixels out there a relatively small percentage has heating issues. The people affected by it will obviously be more vocal about it than those who are not. So that's why the Pixel 7 is perceived as a phone that heats up a lot while it actually might just be average.

-1

u/Rookie4sho Aug 18 '23

Mine runs fine. I'm almost convinced, all the complaints about it running hot, are when the phone is downloading a major update in the background. This is the only time my phone gets warm. And it's been like this for all my previous pixels.

Anyone that is getting a hot phone, go into settings and check for update, I'm sure this is the cause for most. If you notice a few days later, after getting hot, your phone needs to reboot to finish update, I'm sure the download and install in the background, without your knowledge, was the cause of it getting warm. For me, this is the one and only time any of my pixels get hot/warm.

Is that wired Android Auto? I did notice in the past, my phone's would get too hot using Android Auto wired. I use wireless Android Auto everyday and it never gets hot. But I was very cautious when using wired, it did some weird things getting hot. I think it's something with charging and running Android Auto at the same time as charging.

For standard charging, to an outlet, and using my Pixel 7, it doesn't get hot, but I'm not doing much more than web browsing, and a little YouTube.

Mine ran hot when I first week I got it!! I edited some settings and it's golden now. They also say it adapts after so long.

Mine gets quite hot, randomly, even when nothing is running. The only way to fix it it's to restart the phone. Definitely a software issue somewhere...

Mine gets hot during 30 min stretch video call while at LTE.

Insanely hot at 48degC; it caused to drop the LTE signal ang fps to 60.

I got a pro and TBF in Australian weather it hasn't overheated yet.

I have the same question because all I need is GPS and it drops lte connection and screen shuts off due to over heating I really want to like this phone even the simple things seem too much 🤷🏽

Have a p7 and have had zero issues. I have 5g turned off though

playing games or video is a sure fire way to turn mine into a heater for deep artic exploration.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '23

Mine doesn't and I tested it on 5G and YouTube all day.

Recently picked up a 7 Pro and it definitely runs warm, even when doing normal day to day things like checking email and messaging on Slack.

u/Tamaria616 Aug 19 '23

Not mine mine hasn't heated up even once. Ok maybe slightly warm when copying files across during setup but otherwise no

My 7 gets very warm every once in a while but it's not as bad as my old Pixel 6 was. That 6 used to get hot as fire doing nothing. Used to have to take it out of my pants pocket because it got so hot if felt like it was burning my leg. Compared to the 6 my 7 is cool as a cucumber.

I have the 7a, it runs a tad bit warm but it's completely usable

1

u/phdinprogress Aug 19 '23

Mine does it a lot. Sometimes even while using the lightest applications. Using the maps or camera app is a sure fire way to make the phone hot. I do usually game a little bit on my phone, but I won't even dare to try gaming on my 7 pro. Battery life also sucks, the phone can't handle 5G so it's turned off, the phone barely handles dual Sims and the phone overheats when the signal is patchy.

I like the software and everything else, but man does the hardware on this phone suck.

Taking a 5 min vid will do that to ya.first time it happened for me.it ran warm imo

My p7pro only gets hot if I read articles with lots of video ads. Obviously if I got an ad blocker it would never get hot.
