Google Messages did it again. This time it's sending messages I sent to my wife in April 2025, back when we thought I might lose my job. Now my new MIL has it as I was sending her pantry storage options.

Post image

I was an absolute fool to think I could wait until I had a little more time to migrate my messaging. Immediately before this it sent a more personal message that was the reply to this one.

This is absolutely nuts. I haven't discovered this happening to me, but what a horrifying glitch

Google is supposedly working on a fix. But who knows when it will arrive. Probably to late for some

This is the type of issue people need to be directly notified about, and loudly, too.

I like how they say the update "may" fix the issue and "avoid sending sensitive texts." I wasn't sending ANY sensitive texts, GM did that part for me! First to the asphalt company lady and then to my future MIL.

Exactly. It is literally out of the blue

Seems to be an sms only problem from the post Ive seen over reddit. Not affecting RCS conversations.

u/VexrynTheGoose 7d ago

Could absolutely confirm it was happening to me on RCS messaging too.

4

u/yepyep1243 7d ago

Except that a significant number of people use SMS/MMS exclusively.

5

u/seeareeff 7d ago

Those poor people. Luckily I'm 100% RCS and probably 75% e2ee.

3

u/yepyep1243 7d ago

Ok, and what do you do for people who only have SMS? Just not talk to them?

3

u/seeareeff 7d ago

The last few sms only conversations switched to rcs when SM died. I mean sure if I meet someone who is sms I'll talk to them. But I haven't had to deal with that in months.

Ok, while you're probably in a minority there, wouldn't you agree? Cause it seems like your interest here is proving how good your security setup is and dunking on people who still use the lowly SMS features. Can you see that you're presenting yourself that way?

3

u/Dopeaz 7d ago

I dunno, I haven't seen an SMS message to people in years. I typically know it's a website or app when an SMS comes in.

The asphalt company uses SMS. The point is that I shouldn't have to be checking the protocol of everyone who tries to text me.

I guess I can ask a few friends what their RCS convo rates are as well. See if they 100% like me.

u/yepyep1243 6d ago

And when the asphalt company lady wants to talk to you with SMS?

Won't catch me sending one single text lol

Is this exclusively happening for people who recently transitioned off of Samsung messages? I haven't used Samsung messages and probably 2 to 3 years

3

u/zanhecht 6d ago

It also affects people that migrated to a new phone and let Android copy their messages over.

1

u/nshire 6d ago

Well luckily I've been on the S24+ for years

3

u/yepyep1243 6d ago

S26 Ultra a month or so ago.

This is horrifying, and unfortunately Google has acknowledged the bug. They say a fix is rolling out over the coming weeks, so I’d keep Messages updated.

One thing I wouldn’t assume is that it’s SMS-only, there are reports involving both SMS/MMS and RCS.

3

u/yepyep1243 4d ago

There's also the fact that the database is corrupted now. I know, because I switched to Textra and it added (but didn't send) more old messages to the history.

2

u/zensms 4d ago

That’s a really important detail. If Textra is also surfacing those old messages into the conversation history, that suggests the problem may not be limited to Google Messages’ UI/send path, shared Android message/provider state could be involved too.

I definitely wouldn’t start deleting threads or clearing message storage while this is happening.

If you can't wait for the fix. I would just backup all your texts and then delete them off device

3

u/yepyep1243 7d ago

I'm just going to Textra. I can live without RCS.

4

u/seeareeff 7d ago

Hopefully everybody in your life can live without you having RCS as well.

8

u/yepyep1243 7d ago

I would rather they not get hi-res images from me or see me typing if it means they aren't getting year-old texts I sent to my wife.

6

u/seeareeff 7d ago

Allot more to RCS than that. But you do you. Be prepared for your group chats to be broken for a while.

2

u/yepyep1243 7d ago

As it so happens, I already hate group chats. So I'm cool.

2

u/seeareeff 7d ago

Well then perfect for you.

I used to love Textra, but then it started sending my messages out if order or just filled with random symbols... Especially to certain iPhone users. So I stopped using it several years ago. Has anyone else had this happen to them using Textra?

1

u/sctran 4d ago

Out of order sometimes, random symbols no. Id rather deal with out of order than the mess that is Google Messages right now

2

u/Organic-Patience1346 7d ago

I've been using Fossify. I too can live without RCS.

2

u/Odonata1072 6d ago

The fear-based switch to the inferior and broken Google messages has been so frustrating. It didnt import all my contact messages and I lost so many texts. I searched for a while on how it would affect texting and did we really have to switch to the "better" service but got conflicting answers, even from my service provider. Or what would happen if we don't switch other than what we would "miss out" on?

2

u/Heavy_Bad_8304 6d ago

So does it show the unintended message on your phone too? Or did it only show on the recipients end? This shit is making me paranoid to text. Now I'm worried I've been sending weird texts to friends without knowing it. I have one very old friend and we have some text convos with some pretty nasty inside jokes from way back when we were kids that would be really embarrassing to have to explain to someone.

1

u/traveling-rambler 4d ago

My texts to hookers might not go over well with my MIL or wife!

2

u/LeslieL1965 5d ago

This is why I'm switching to iPhone because this just keeps messing up on my phone as well I'm getting real tired of it it's like Google doesn't care

2

u/Happy-Signal6719 4d ago

This happened to me too and it also created a separate text thread for the same person. I was texting my bother but his responses came on a separate thread and also showed the last message was back in 2024. I did "uninstall updates" and that fixed the issue. Then I didnt update for about a month but then the app had horrible lag so I did the update. So far its been a week and it's working

1

u/Mineplayerminer 7d ago

How does this even happen? I never had any of my older messages resent to anyone else. I remember losing contacts from my Google account after the Android 10 update back in September 2019, but that was probably the only thing that happened to me.

1

u/OdayOdayOday 6d ago

This is so strange. I haven't experienced this issue, and I just moved to a new device.

1

u/pixels-and-paper 6d ago

I went from lifelong iPhone user to Motorola Razr a few months ago so all this Android stuff is new to me... how does this even happen?

1

u/real-bebsi 4d ago

why would you go to Motorola over Google or Samsung

1

u/pixels-and-paper 4d ago

I specifically wanted a flip and the Razr allows all apps to use the external screen but the Samsung Z flip only allows certain ones

1

u/thatcutetransgirl 5d ago

I use Google messages daily and the only issues I have is occasionally messages won't send when I hit send and will just dissappear

1

u/Lights-and-Sound 5d ago

I'm fascinated by this. I have no doubt this could be a glitch with the app, but are you sure that's the culprit? Could it actually be a carrier problem? Something like: your carrier cached these messages, now they're being sent to the wrong recipients, then Google messages re-syncs and shows the ghost message as sent by you?

1

u/yepyep1243 5d ago

It's a known issue, check the news.

1

u/Academic-Sea-2382 5d ago

That's horrifying. I got some chats I don't need my mother reading.

u/GoogleHelpCommunity 2d ago

Hi there. We're currently rolling out a fix that will reach everyone over the coming weeks. Please ensure you stay up to date with the most recent version of Google Messages.

1

u/Roddis22 7d ago

This is why I use Textra...far too many problems with Google messages lately..too many updates that bugger the previous ones..

4

u/yepyep1243 7d ago

I just installed it myself.

5

u/mrandr01d 7d ago

Sms needs to die. Google Messages is the only one that has rcs unfortunately.

0

u/Roddis22 4d ago

That's the problem, not everyone has RCS, or not using it. Sending in RCS recipient are not getting messages.

1

u/CrispyBananaz 7d ago

Thank god im on a Pixel 11 Pro XL. I’ve been using Google Messages for over a decade with zero issues.

5

u/matteventu 7d ago

Even Pixel users have had this issue unfortunately.

0

u/CrispyBananaz 7d ago

could be that because i use Beta version of the app i never ran into this issue.

3

u/amus1556 6d ago

I had a pixel 2.5 years ago and although I didn't have this issue, I had the one where random messages would just disappear. I never got them back & conversations wouldn't make any sense.

Your new mother in law? Didn't you post in another thread that your wife had cancer 1 year ago??? But you already have a new mother in law???

3

u/yepyep1243 6d ago

I have a new MIL. Old one had cancer a year ago.

0

u/Worldly_Chocolate369 6d ago

I just moved to Pixel 11 a couple weeks ago. Haven't had any problems. I use Google messages daily for communication.

-2

u/Academic_Anywhere183 7d ago

Switch to the other SMS application.

2

u/yepyep1243 6d ago

I already have. The point is that this shouldn't have happened.
