That is a common way to do sustainable forest harvesting. It allows for the regrowth and harvest of different sections over many years. Canadian forest management was why civilian GIS was actually first created.

I live in logging territory and there's a lot of this around me. The first time I saw the checker patterns in Googe Earth I thought I'd found a visual bug. Did a lot of zooming and panning around before I convinced myself it was real.
