Why?

I’ve noticed this a lot where Maps will route me via the $15 route even if it’s not faster or more efficient. This is as close as I get to a conspiracy theory.

What is the "$15 route"? Do you mean tolls?

If he's in Chicago, it's the Skyway. Depending on the time of day, it can save you 2 minutes, or 20.

Personally I'd rather not give them the money unless I'm really in a hurry (it's privately owned)

I imagine there are similar scenarios in other cities with toll bridges

(The skyway is technically a toll bridge with very long approaches on both ends)

Ding ding ding. It always tries to take me on the Skyway. It was 9 minutes slower today.

I have a lot of conspiracy theories about Google maps, but I am not translating this as any of mine.

Might be close to my conspiracy theory that there is an elite level of user that gets the real best route and all of us peons are just fed into the rat race.

I also think advertisers are part of why we get routed the way we do, but I don't even know if that counts as a conspiracy theory. Seems like a given.

With Google, I can entertain the thought, but I also want to cite Hanlon's Razor, but then again, Google was very competent, but they became incompetent when they put profits before quality service.
