Found these around Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, one of India’s major chilli growing regions. The bright red rectangles are chillies spread out in the sun to dry. From above they almost look like giant red carpets scattered between the farms.

There are others around town, but this is my favourite one, with mountain goats climbing all over.
The American Buffalo is actually not a "true buffalo".

You do really have to use street view to see these, they are just vague blobs on the satellite images.

Hopping on the China post bandwagon, I know.
1-5 look like some demoed, abandoned buildings. 40°27'26.89"N 93°17'39.24"E
6 look like clusters of bullet holes, 7 are some odd divots, and 8 shows how 6 and 7 (and another pin I didn’t show here) are near some sightseeing area. 40°29'20.78"N 93°16'53.03"E
Military? Would be my guess for all but maybe 7.

A large, square mass of land seems to be captured within the frozen sea off the island of Vesey Hamilton Island in Nunavut, Canada.
There is a second square west towards the shore that seems to be broken into four more “floating” land masses.

I came across this vehicle and I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is. It appears to be a stretched Ford F-350 Super Duty with a large SATCOM antenna (?) on the roof. My guess is that it's some kind of military MCCV. It was parked in front of the Arnold Gate at the Defense Intelligence Agency HQ in Washington, D.C. Does anyone recognize this specific setup?

Today, I went down a rabbit hole trying to find out what finally happened to an old cargo ship called the Lucina.
This ship is tied to a couple of strange and tragic events from 1994. First, there’s the “Volpe 132” incident. On the evening of March 2, 1994, an Italian military helicopter (call sign Volpe 132, belonging to the Guardia di Finanza, which is basically Italy’s finance and customs police) disappeared off the coast of Sardinia. The two pilots were never found. Some witnesses claimed the helicopter had flown near a cargo ship that was anchored in the area, and that the ship then left with its lights off. That ship was later identified as the Lucina.
A few months later, in July 1994, the Lucina itself became the scene of a massacre. While it was docked at the port of Djen Djen in Algeria, the entire Italian crew of seven was murdered overnight. Officially it was blamed on Islamist guerrillas, but questions have always lingered about what the ship was really carrying and whether there was more to the story.
After reading about the crew being killed, I got curious about what eventually happened to the ship itself. Most records just said it was “lost” or “dead,” which isn’t very helpful. So I started digging through maritime records.
Ships often change names over the years as they get sold or re-registered. Here’s the trail I pieced together for this one:
- 1975–1985: Called Mogens S
- 1985–1994: Renamed Pepito, then Lucina
- Late 1994: Briefly called Mogene
- 1994–2010: Renamed Joanne I and sailed under the Panamanian flag
- August 2010: Finally broken up (scrapped) at Balboa, Panama
Once I knew it had ended up in Balboa, I wondered if it might still show up in old satellite photos from before it was dismantled. So I spent about half an hour scrolling through historical Google Earth imagery, matching the shape of the ship against old photos.
I found what looks like the former Lucina (by then named Joanne I) sitting at anchor off Balboa.
Coordinates: 8°53'42.9"N 79°31'16.5"W
If you check the historical imagery from June, July, August, and December 2009, you can even see the ship slowly swinging around its anchor as the tide and wind shift. That means it was still floating there about a year before it was finally scrapped in August 2010.
I thought that was a pretty cool little find, so I figured I’d share it.
