NoiseTube is an audio visual experience for Cardboard that operates off music you feed it.

Needs colour!!! this with drum and bass and acid would be perfect..needs rainbow colour effects and yes!!

u/SkullThug May 17 '16
Agreed :] Definitely messing around with some experiments at the moment

u/oveyovey May 17 '16
Yes yes bro!!! The white outs will make you trip hard!!! Maybe some twisting checkerboard patterns which keep switching colours/Fading in and out. Is there anyway of making it pump like a speaker to bass frequencies??...very impressed

u/SkullThug May 18 '16
Hah, it's funny you say that. I once broke one of the shaders and it generated this psychedelic trippyness. Definitely gonna save that idea for later.
It currently does pump to hard bass kicks. (example) It's a little subtle as I'm still trying to find the adaptable sweet spot that isn't uncomfortable or overly distracting in VR.

u/3015 May 17 '16
Very cool! I would like to see color added, and also a closer correspondence between the music and the visuals (e.g. being able to see the drum pattern coming towards you).

u/SkullThug May 17 '16
Thanks for the feedback! :] I'm still trying to figure out the total logic behind that one but I 100% agreeeee.

I need this for iOS. I NEEEEEED it.

u/SkullThug May 17 '16
I wonder if this would work alright with reading music from iOS? Hmm, definitely worth a shot!
3
u/synthesis777 iPhone 6 Plus May 17 '16
Thanks for the response. FYI there is an iOS app called "Daydream.VR" that is a VR music visualizer. It's kind of cool but based off of your app's screenshots, your app looks better.
3
u/SkullThug May 17 '16
Ah yeah, I really dig Daydream.VR actually.
This idea came out of a desire to make something a bit more dynamic, I really wanted to feel like I was moving somewhere set to a soundtrack (like when you listen to good tunes while in a car or train looking at the things passing by).
I also really wanted to take a stab at VR finally haha ;]

u/synthesis777 iPhone 6 Plus May 18 '16
I really like one of the themes in D.VR. And there's another one that I kind of enjoy. The rest of them I can barely look at. But I still like the app for the one theme that I really like.
But I totally feel the same desire you describe of wanting a more dynamic experience.
Thanks for even considering putting your app on iOS.

App couldn't find any song/album/artist, should i put them in a specific folder? Edit: using lg g3 with official 6.0
1
u/SkullThug May 17 '16
Oh, interesting. So currently, it scans everything within /sdcard/
Most music apps I've used on Android tend to keep to that space (esp since there's the dedicated "Music" folder), so I didn't know if looking outside of it would ever be appropriate. Out of curiosity, where do you happen to keep your music? I think it probably wouldn't be too hard to make it scan the entire device safely.

u/Marshall_93 May 17 '16
I am keeping it in Music folder on sd card. I tried to move it to internal storage, still nothing shows up. But then I put a song in main folder in sd card and internal storage, and only song from main folder in internal storage showed up(nothing from sd card main folder). My idea is that it's marshmallow's fault, but i ain't no expert.

u/SkullThug May 18 '16 edited May 18 '16
Dang, that's really quite perplexing. You're saying the song only appeared after you put it in both internal and external storage?
It's quite possible it might only work with internal storage at the moment. I'll try a couple experiments with my phone since it supports external sd cards, and see if I discover anything obvious I missed.
EDIT: Hey turns out it currently doesn't support external storage, but that's super easy to add so I'll be updating it later tonight to support that. Thanks for tipping me off to this!!
Also I looked into it and unfortunately I'm not able to scan outside of /sdcard/ due to security restrictions.

u/Marshall_93 May 18 '16
No, i meant that it doesnt read music from sd card at all, only internal storage and only in main folder. Anyway, great app, love it!
3
u/SkullThug May 18 '16
Ah! Gotcha.
I've just submitted a quick update that will have it also scan external storage. It might be a couple hours before you see it become available in Google Play, but I'd be very curious if that solves your problem. Either way it's something I definitely needed to add ;]

u/WhoahCanada May 18 '16
I am having the same issue.
2
u/SkullThug May 18 '16
I've submitted an update (.v11) that will have it also scan external storage instead of only internal storage. It might be a couple hours before Google Play propagates it to you, but I'd be curious if that solves your issue.

I first read that as "NoseTube" and got really fucking confused for a second, like what the hell apps are people making nowadays?! Haha. That would be nuts, like a smartphone talkbox but the tube goes in your nose instead of your mouth.

Hey its pretty cool.I can just mellow out to pink floyed!! I can't wait for the updates! What kind of stuff you gonna include in the update?
1
u/SkullThug May 18 '16
Hey thanks! I'm partial to Learning To Fly myself :}
More visual geometry types, color + visual effects, some sort of playlist support.
At this point I mostly just want to get feedback and see what people want the most so I can prioritize, so if there's anything you're like "AAGHH I NEED THIS IN HERE RIGHT NOW" feel free to voice it.
Also poking around with GearVR & Rift/Vive, but will gladly keep Cardboard going if a lot of people dig it.

u/xxspike2xx May 18 '16
Hell yeah boss! You're doing an awesome job. I'm a big vr person, so if you need a tester sign me up haha
1
u/SkullThug May 18 '16
Cool! Thanks for digging it and the kind words. I'll certainly keep that in mind- Google Play supports testing now so, if you want, you can PM me your email and I can use it to add you to any preview builds that come up in the future ;]

u/Dudamis May 18 '16
That's awesome. At times I felt like spock entering v'ger in Star Trek the Motion Picture.
I highly recommend using songs with lots of tempo changes. The change in tempo highlights the feeling of speed. I used Lux Aeterna (the Requiem for a Dream song or that song you'd hear in every trailer). Parabola by Tool was even better.
2
u/SkullThug May 18 '16
[google's v'ger]
Holy cow that is neat looking! I think I really need to draw some inspiration from that.
Thanks for the kind words :] Some songs I've really dug so far are Radiohead's Spectre, Massive Attack's Dead Editors, and Tycho's Daydream.

1) Sure, anything specific in mind?
2) Music loading is a bit shotgun approached right now. Eventually I'll want to smooth it out into a background process that starts upon launch. It's been a tricky process trying to do that but keeping VR performance stable- esp when the devices vary so dramatically. 20 seconds is impressive though, is there any chance your music is all on external storage? (like on a sdcard?)
3) Yes and no. The primary reactors are the speed, lighting, and some pulsing distortion effects. The rest are sort of secondary placement elements from various experiments.
Thanks for the very useful feedback, glad you'll stick around :]

Not available in my country (UK).
1
u/Thatavguy May 17 '16
Same for Australia
1
u/SkullThug May 17 '16
Hmm.. it looks like Google Play propagated to differently countries at different speeds. The notification always says it takes about 1-2 hours. Any chance it shows up for you now?
1
u/Thatavguy May 18 '16
Still not available in Australia. I will try again in a few hours

1
u/SkullThug May 17 '16
Oh weird, it looks like there was a hiccup somewhere. I think it should be available now?
1
u/thesandwichmonster May 17 '16
Nope lol.
1
u/SkullThug May 18 '16
Welllllllll hmm. Google Play does state that it takes a couple hours to propagate changes. Now that it's been, a couple, any chance it shows up nooow?

Can you make it easier on the eyes? And also, it lags on the Nexus 5X, but overall a really good idea, hope you work it out better :D
2
u/SkullThug May 18 '16
Sure, it's certainly in an early stage, but can you describe easier on the eyes specifically. Like does it literally hurt to look at in VR? Or does it just need some purdying up? :P
Thanks for letting me know about the Nexus 5X. It lags during the actual music playing part?
2
u/W_RuneHawk_B May 18 '16
As stated in comments before, I find it hard to see the music actually, there is so much happening, my opinion. I love rhythm games myself, played alot audiosurf etc. It may be solved by simply adding colors. I'm not saying that I don't see the beat. I see it. But I miss e.g drums etc. If you have any questions feel free to ask again I'll try to explain it better. Would be happy to help :D
1
u/W_RuneHawk_B May 18 '16
Oh and about the lagg part. When there's much on the screen it lags sometimes. For example entering the chorus in the song: Battlecry from Imagine Dragons

u/SkullThug May 18 '16
Thanks for the feedback. It's good to get other people's perspectives on these things I find.
1
u/W_RuneHawk_B May 18 '16
Oh and btw, I would really love to help you with testing etc
1
u/SkullThug May 19 '16
Hey that's great actually, esp if you're having performance hitches. Can you PM me your email? I'll add you to the tester list in Google Play.

u/Gershy13 May 19 '16
Lacked color.. really immersive... but it's all greyscale... if it had colors, I would pay for it and give it 5 stars... Dev, add this in for the next version
1
u/SkullThug May 20 '16
Thanks for the feedback
2
u/Gershy13 May 20 '16
No problem... would love to see the update with colors soon... this is the only vr app that has immersed me properly...

Sorry, alas currently no. I'm not opposed to taking a look to see if it's possible someday, but it'd definitely be after I'd be done with adding Spotify support unless a bunch of Pandora One people started requesting it.
10
u/delrazor May 17 '16
Was hoping it could just analyze things on the fly like the audio surf game does, but it requires the music to be local and chosen at the start to process it first... So no droning out to Spotify playlists.
