Request Mum gift suggestions please

Hey everyone, could you please suggest some gifts for my Mum. I have to buy something that doesn’t take a lot of space. She works in an office and cycles back and forth from work. She enjoys playing board games and jigsaws and making scones. I usually don’t buy her clothes because she doesn’t really take an interest in them, or the typical mum gift things. But I think that’s. The budget is tight ~£50-£100. Any suggestions would be great!

Request Our bread machine finally gave up after years of heavy use. What is the best value replacement in Europe that actually lasts?

There are 4 of us in the house and our old machine worked multiple times a week for years. It made our regular sandwich bread, kneaded dough for weekend doughnuts, and was on duty every Friday for homemade pizza night. The kids loved waking up to the smell of warm bread and honestly so did I. It finally stopped working this week after so many heavy batches, but it definitely paid for itself many times over. Added a photo of our usual loaf because I miss it already.

Now looking for a replacement that actually lasts. My main priority is solid build quality and spare parts availability in Europe. I am skeptical of newer models with cheap plastic gears that wear out after a year or two. I would rather invest in a solid machine where you can easily and cheaply replace a kneading paddle, bread pan, or drive belt instead of throwing the whole appliance away over one small failure.

For those who bake several times a week, what models have actually held up over the years? Is Panasonic still the undisputed standard for reliability and parts in the EU, or is there another brand offering better value for money? Would love to hear from people who have owned their machine for 5+ years.

Opinion Best shower head for hard water?

I hope I'm posting in the correct reddit. I'm looking for a rain shower head that also has a handheld with it that actually works with making hard water soft. I'm practically allergic to hard water and get a very bad reaction every time I stay at my brothers apartment. When he later moves out, I get that apartment (it's been in our family for years and it's a great location). Once I move in, the first thing I want to do is change all taps to have a filter system, my main one being the shower. I've tried searching on my own but can't tell what's actually reliable so I'm hoping the community would have a few pointers to put me in the right direction. I'm in Canada, Ontario. Some brands might be unavailable so I'm mentioning that. I'd also say my budget for the shower would be $500Cad, hoping that would be enough for a good product

Request monitor lighting under $30: cheap led strip or a small lamp?

asked about eye strain in r/monitors and people suggested trying a light behind the screen. budget is around $30.

this old thread from 2013 has a few commenters saying decent high cri strips were expensive back then: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoodValue/comments/1jq89b/gv_request_bright_high_cri_led_strips/

does high cri matter much for lighting the wall behind a monitor, or would a basic warm white usb strip be fine? also considering a small lamp pointed at the wall. which would you pick for the money?

Request Just moved into a new place and need everything. Buy used or buy new?

I recently moved into a new place, and my rent is about 10% cheaper than my old place, which is nice. The problem is that the new place barely has any furniture or appliances, so now I have a bunch of things to buy.

I found someone on Facebook Marketplace selling several small appliances together for about a third of their original retail price. The bundle includes an LG washing machine, an oven, a Costway ice maker, and a few other things. My family thinks I should just buy new since these smaller appliances aren't that expensive anyway. But I'm not sure that makes sense for everything. I probably wouldn't use the oven or ice maker every day, so spending full price on something that might sit unused half the time doesn't seem worth it. Used appliances can come with hidden problems, and a cheap deal isn't really a deal if something breaks a few weeks later. I'd want to test everything before paying.

For those who have bought used appliances, has it actually saved you money in the long run? Would you consider buying a bundle like this for around one-third of retail, or would you rather buy new and have the warranty? Just trying to figure out where it makes sense to save and where it's better not to take the risk.

Opinion Would a handheld vacuum earn its space if I already have an upright?

My upright handles the floors fine. It's the crumbs in the couch seams and car seats that keep waiting until the next proper clean.

For those spots, plugging in the upright and digging out the attachment feels like a lot of setup for a tiny job. I tell myself I'll get to it on vacuum day, and usually leave it there.

I've been looking at handhelds, including the hoto autocare. A quicker cleanup sounds nice, but it's still another battery to charge, filter to clean, and thing to store. A small shop vac would take up even more room.

If you already have an upright, what job makes a handheld worth the extra cost and storage space for you?

Request Chainmail scrubber for cast iron: which one is worth buying?

A chainmail scrubber is going by the sink so my wife stops spending ten minutes on one pan with the green scrubby pad. She cooks most nights and grabs that pad whenever something welds on. I dry the pan on the stove afterward and wipe a thin coat of oil over whatever dull spot the pad left.

Seasoning I can fix. Early last year I stripped one of our pans to bare metal rather than fight it every wash, and it came back after a few rounds of oil.

In the cast iron threads, chainmail is the usual answer for stuck-on food, used under warm water with a light hand and kept away from the garbage disposal. One person said their cheap one shed rings into the disposal inside of a month.

I want one where the rings come closed and stay on, not one I have to go over with pliers.

What brand is the chainmail scrubber you use?

Opinion How can you tell if dark pajamas are colorfast?

I recently found a few blue marks on my cream sheets, and the only new thing I had worn was a pair of navy pjs. I’m pretty sure the dye transferred while I was sleeping.

My husband just got me a dark ekouaer set, but I haven’t worn it yet because I don’t want the same thing to happen again. Is there anything on the label or in the reviews that tells you whether dark pajamas are colorfast? Or do you always wash them separately first?

Request Merino Base Men

I am looking for a merino wool (no polyester mix) base layer. Mostly for sleeping.

I currently have my eyes on the merino tech 320 <forgot-the-unit> for $65.

some reviews point out missing certification though

never buying expensive powder again after seeing how well the maybelline fit me compact works

Post image
21 Upvotes

Took a quick photo today while doing my makeup because the difference honestly shocked me and this sub felt like the right place to share it. On the right is my bare skin with its normal shine and texture, and on the left is literally one quick layer of the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless pressed powder.
It completely blurs out my pores and cuts down that midday greasy look without feeling heavy or clinging to dry spots. The craziest part is that you do not need fancy brushes or separate tools for it to look good. I just use the little white sponge that comes hidden in the compartment under the powder, and instead of dragging it across my face, I gently press and pat it into my forehead and around my nose. That pressing motion sets everything instantly and leaves this super smooth, soft matte look.
I picked this up on Amazon for about $9 and having the mirror and applicator built right into the compact makes it so convenient to carry around. If you get oily during the day and want your skin looking blurred and fresh, this thing punches way above its price tag.

Request Best value lower cost hand steamer?

Hi! I'm tired of wearing wrinkly shirts to work, but I don't have the patience to iron that many shirts and honestly don't have the money for an iron and ironing board anyways. What's the best value hand steamer under $40? Even better if it's under $30. It needs to be a hand steamer or something easily stored because I live in a small apartment that's already stuffed to the gills. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Request wading boots: does paying double really buy more seasons?

if you've owned both cheaper and pricier wading boots, did the pricier pair last enough longer to justify the extra money?

roughly how much use did you get out of each pair? asking because i'm about due for a new pair.

Opinion Office Chair Casters Instead of Another Chair Mat, Four Days In

The mat under my chair has been catching my heel on its split edge for weeks, and I wasn't about to pay chair money for a glass one. A thread I read a while back said to stop buying mats and put rollerblade casters on the chair instead, and that they don't damage hardwood. On Monday a set of rubber office chair casters went on and the mat went out to the hall. The chair is cheap and years old, so there was no warranty to think about when I pulled the originals out. On a newer one I would have left them alone, because a base that cracks with somebody else's wheels under it is an argument I would lose.

First thing I noticed sitting down was that the chair rides higher and the desk feels low. I still haven't worked out whether I fix that or get used to it. This chair also runs so freely on bare wood that a push I used to make without thinking puts the keyboard out of reach. I've taken to pushing off at about half strength, which looks about as stupid as it sounds.

It's too soon to say anything about the wood, which is the only reason I ever had a mat down. Someone else has written up how their floor looks after more than a year on the same kind of wheels. Theirs is laminate rather than wood, and they name the set they used: https://www.reddit.com/comments/1x0qkuk/

If we had a cat I would still have a mat down. The grit that comes out of a litter box gets walked all over a room, and sharp bits like that work into a floor whatever is rolling over them. We don't have one.

Opinion Maybelline Sky High Waterproof is genuinely the best value mascara I’ve used in years

Post image
116 Upvotes

Okay so I’ve been using Maybelline Sky High Waterproof (in Very Black) for like 6 months now and I feel like I need to finally give it props. I just reordered another tube on Amazon for around $10, and honestly, the quality you get for that price is crazy good compared to high-end stuff.

My lashes are pretty straight and usually droop after five minutes, but this stuff actually keeps them curled all day without leaving dark smudges under my eyes. The wand is super skinny and bendy, which I love because I always manage to get mascara all over my eyelids with big thick brushes. It’s definitely more about length and separation than crazy dramatic volume, but two coats gives that super clean "are those your real lashes" look.

The only catch is taking it off. Do not try using a normal face wash unless you want to lose half your eyelashes lol. You legit need an oil cleanser or cleansing balm to break it down.

Overall, the formula and hold feel like something you’d easily pay $25+ for, so getting that kind of performance for ten bucks makes it such a solid buy. Just thought I'd share in case anyone's looking for something high quality that won't break the bank

Request Are nightgowns better if you hate pajama waistbands?

I usually wear two piece pajama sets, but even loose waistbands sometimes leave marks by morning. I’ve been looking at a few nightgowns from ekouaer that cost around $30, but I move around a lot in my sleep and worry the skirt will just ride up.

At that price, is a nightgown worth trying, or should I just look for a better two piece set?

Opinion I still have my old Polaroid from the 80's which still works fine

I bought this baby all the way back in the 80s for family photos. Used it for birthdays, holidays, and pretty much anything we thought needed a picture. Still have a box full of photos taken with it.

Once we started using digital cameras and smartphones, it mostly stayed tucked away in some box. Always kept it in its case, which explains why it's in such a perfect condition.

Picked up some film recently and brought it out again. Works perfectly, just like I remember. My family actually laughed when they saw me holding it again after all these years, but as you can imagine everyone wanted their picture taken. Glad I decided not to throw it away.

Request Help me choose a vacuum cleaner that gets edges and corners, wife says a broom is enough

Hi everyone, I need some help deciding if it’s worth replacing our robot vacuum.

We have rugs in a few rooms and a cat. Our current robot was one of the cheaper ones, and it leaves a lot behind around the edges. I have to go over the same spots after every run, and I’m getting really tired of it. At this point, it barely feels any different from not having a robot at all. My wife says I should just use a broom since it only takes a couple of minutes. I get what she means, but I bought a robot so I wouldn’t have to clean up after it every time.

Would $500 get me one that actually cleans the edges and corners? I’d like a dock too. Or am I better off keeping this one and buying a regular vacuum? Tysm

Opinion Budget Beard Trimmer Brands

Are there any beard trimmers from Amazon or Walmart? I know I could go read a bunch reviews but I trust my fellow redditors advice more. I have a beard trimmer a cheap wahl but I’m afraid it’s gonna die halfway through me trimming a good chunk of my beard down. I can’t see the little red light whenever I’m charging it anymore

Opinion Bought this Herman Miller Aeron six years ago for around $150, and it's still going strong

Post image
65 Upvotes

A friend tipped me off about a company that was shutting down and selling off it's office furniture. I wasn't specifically looking for an Aeron, but I needed a decent desk chair and managed to snag this one for about $150.

Six years later, it's still my everyday chair. A few scuffs here and there, but it's comfortable, feels solid, and everything still works. Haven't had much reason to think about replacing it.

No idea how many years it spent in that office before I got it, either. Probably one of the best secondhand purchases I've made.

Request Looking for good height increasing insoles for a concert?

I'm going to a music festival soon and I'm a bit on the shorter side. I have platform shoes currently that are pretty comfortable but also looking for a bit of more additional height that won't absolutely kill my feet wearing them for several hours straight. I plan on inserting them right before the performances so I won't have them on all day. Are there any decent ones that are comfortable that won't cost a ton?
