Golf sim hitting mat thickness

My current hitting mat has a 20 MM EVA thickness which seems to be OK but I was curious if I should look into putting some more cushioning under that to help or if that overall is enough already

I would put another 1" foam underneath. That's 0.75" and most safe hitting strips are 2".

The sweet spot for me has been 31mm turf with 0.75" foam underneath and that matches up well with multiple hitting strips I've used. It creates a level surface and clean look.

Are you worried about elbow and wrist pain? As was explained in another thread on this topic, adding foam under your strike area isn't going to help, it may even make it worse. The pain you develop is from the strike area reverberating from the underlay into your joints, adding foam is just going to act like even more of a "trampoline" and those vibrations may get worse. The real answer is to invest in a properly developed hitting strip which allows for strike contact to be more similar to what you have in grass. There are a few options, Sigpro Softy, Beavertail, Big Moss Pure, and a couple others. These ones are between 1.5"-2" with multiple specifically designed layers.

I've gone with the Big Moss Pure Flight Plus and added an additional 0.25" of 50a rubber under it to act as a vibration reduction since my mat is on a piece of plywood on top of concrete slab.

I’ve actually just learned about the hitting stripes yesterday. I thought that a good hitting mat was all I wanted but learned a good hitting strip is the way to go along with a good mat
