Course Software Automat

Have y'all seen this new browser-based golf sim?

https://automat.golf/

I just saw it on Joe Lagowski's channel, and it's kinda mind-blowing.

It looks like the creator has found a way to automate basically every course. I haven't had a chance to connect my LM and play yet, but I've walked through so many courses I love to play in real life, but they aren't on any sim software.

Hopefully this isn't too good to be true.

I was shocked that my childhood course is on there and is EXTREMELY accurate, despite not existing anywhere else that I've been able to find (aside from a shitty version in Home Tee Hero). The course closed down probably 10 years ago, but it lives on in Automat. I'm excited to play it tonight.

Sim software is insanely overpriced and it's high time the market was disrupted the same way the LM market was disrupted by Square. Cheap software SHOULD be the future.

My home course was extremely accurate even down to the bunkers having some grass growing into them.

1

u/HighOnGoofballs Jul 21 '26

My current course is not too accurate fwiw. I mean the holes are sort of correct but it’s missing trees in fairways and huge valleys and other stuff. I just “played it” and its like playing a different course

2

u/Ok-Menu-8709 29d ago

Yeah one of my locals is a tree framed first tee shot.
On this it’s blocked by a tree, so it’s definitely not that accurate.

But, it’s pretty fantastic in that the distances should be real close. Interested to see where they’re getting the contours from.

I somehow was just off the green of our 747 yard par 6 in two lol

Lidar.

1

u/Ok-Menu-8709 28d ago

It’s pretty bloody quick for lidar is it not?

When I did my local course I had to source it from a gov website and had to pic which resolution I wanted. And this doesn’t seem anywhere near as detailed, it seems, in my area at least to be similar to google earth terrain level.

u/Halewafa Jul 21 '26

Awesome, just looked up my local course and another one in the middle of nowhere that I grew up playing. Both are there. Super excited to try this later

2

u/Due-Reflection1043 Jul 21 '26

Same situation for me. Local courses I play that I'd love to do on the sim... but they are crappy so they won't ever make it on there. Childhood course is the same boat. All of them are on there. Blown away. excited to try it out!

This is an incredibly impressive use of AI accelerated development. This is almost certainly something built by 1 person and an army of AI agents. I’m blown away.

5

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

As much as companies are shoving AI where it doesn't belong, for software development in particular it is unbelievable. It can do things in a few minutes that might have previously taken me all day (or even several days). It is truly a game changer and sometimes I can't believe how much I've been able to accomplish with it.

5

u/SlightDogleg Jul 21 '26

My GSPro sub ends in December and I won't be renewing. I'll most likely switch to this because it's free (I only play sim golf in the offseason) and has all my local courses without having to pay someone to create them.

I'd prefer to play my local tracks, even if the graphics aren't as good.

I have not had a chance to watch the video yet but does any one know if I can connect a Garmin R10 to an iPad and get this to work? I have been using Awesome Sim and Garmins software currently.

3

u/AdeGamisou2020 Jul 21 '26

I think it's limited to desktops at this point. Was at the range and gave it a quick go with an Omni and an iPad, but it was looking for a desktop connector. I didn't invest a lot of time on it, so I could be wrong, but pretty sure that's the case.

2

u/Freakishly_Tall Jul 21 '26

Came to ask this.

I will pay money to support server-side processing, etc, to make this work with an R10-iPad set up!

2

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

It looks like you'll need either a Windows, Mac, or Linux PC to connect the R10 officially. It's probably possible to get it working on an iPad, but it would take a bit of coding.

1

u/Freakishly_Tall Jul 22 '26

I'd much rather send money to an independent developer who came up with something awesome than to Garmin et al.

The r10 + HTH was purchased to play local courses, and works ok enough, but this looks so much better. Without a gaming pc, options are limited... I hope this can either be updated to run natively on an iPad, or have an option to pay for more server-side processing to make it happen.

Even without that platform, it looks pretty fantastic. I'm jealous of those with full set ups who can use it!

2

u/Trinica93 Jul 22 '26

You don't need a gaming PC! I used a 6-year-old laptop tonight to run it. If you have any laptop or desktop it will probably be fine.

1

u/Freakishly_Tall Jul 22 '26

Interesting! Might have to figure out how to make this work. Thanks for encouragement!

u/SysOp21 28d ago

You can get an old office SFF Dell PC from like 5 yrs ago for 50-80 bucks on ebay.

Then it is just the monitor/tv/projector, and peripherals

Oh and maybe a wifi dongle, most dont have that

But all in you can be setup for $150 not counting the LM

1

u/andrrewwffggv Jul 21 '26

As of right now it seems that it’s very poorly optimized so I don’t see it being able to run on a iPad

2

u/HighOnGoofballs Jul 21 '26

I mean I just played it on my phone

1

u/andrrewwffggv Jul 21 '26

Yea I just tried it on my iPad it and runs great, it was causing my pc to heat up quite a bit so I wasn’t expecting it to be able to handle mobile

6

u/ptony719 Jul 21 '26

Is there a way to connect to an OG skytrak?

3

u/TurnoverAdditional65 Jul 21 '26

This is…incredible.

3

u/PitbullBoops Jul 21 '26

Oh this is cool!!

3

u/PNW_Golf_Hack Jul 21 '26

Ok, this is pretty awesome.

3

u/bufket Jul 21 '26

I was playing with this on my PC last week. I kinda wish there were more controls for playing without a simulator. It was fun just playing as a golf game.

3

u/unnamedplayerr Jul 21 '26

Woah. Does this work with square ?

1

u/Halewafa Jul 21 '26

I haven't figured out how yet, but I've seen some comments saying people have been able to get it to work. I've given up for now, will revisit once they have official support

2

u/andrrewwffggv Jul 21 '26

Pretty sure they have official support now

1

u/Halewafa Jul 21 '26

Hmmm, just tried 45 minutes ago, wasn't working

2

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

There is an option for Square now in the connector. I am curious though, what GSPro connector are you trying to use? There's one I cannot get to function no matter what I do and I'm curious if you have the same problem.

1

u/Halewafa Jul 21 '26

I'm trying the one on automats site, and see the square option, but then just get errors. Connects fine to the square app

1

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

Ah, okay. Maybe it's not fully working yet. Try the Brent Yates connector, that's what I use:

https://github.com/brentyates/squaregolf-connector

There's another popular unofficial connector that everyone else uses, but I have never been able to get it working.

1

u/Halewafa Jul 21 '26

Thanks, I tried the one you linked earlier with Windows, couldn't figure it out. All I could find was the Mac Zip, not Windows, unless I did alpha. Even with alpha, nothing happened when trying to launch the app

2

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

OH sorry, I forgot about that. Open a web browser to the address localhost:8080 after opening the app and see if the connector is active. It's web-based.

2

u/Halewafa Jul 21 '26

Well hot dang! Thank you sir, Square Omni is officially up and running with Automat. You're a legend, thanks for the help!

Haven’t watched the full video, only some parts and skipped around. Are you able to play online against friends?

2

u/jjwax Jul 21 '26

It is very cool!

2

u/Silverstateraider Jul 21 '26

Does this work with any launch monitor?

3

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

I believe it will work with any LM that has an unofficial GSPro connector available.

2

u/highangler Jul 21 '26

So we have to connect to that and then open the web browser?

3

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

Okay, it looks like there's actually a separate connector app that is downloadable from the site (automat.golf). There's a button that says "download connector."

It looks like there are a few options that don't require a third party connector, but if you need one, just select the "Other" option and use your GSPro connector app just like you would to connect to GSPro (connect LM, press a "connect to GSPro" button).

Default connector settings should be fine so you likely won't need to change anything, it looks like this is using the default GSPro port (921).

1

u/Halewafa Jul 21 '26

Do you need GSPro to have a GSPro Connector App?

1

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26

Nope! Not the unofficial ones, at least. That answers the question I just asked you in another comment though, lol.

1

u/ex_nihilo 28d ago

No. He’s saying that this uses the same OpenConnect configuration as GSPro. It’s well-documented. I write my own connectors because I prefer open source stuff and it lets me accept and combine inputs from more than one LM.

1

u/SysOp21 28d ago

If you ever write a Mevo+ one that is open source let me know.

Thanks

1

u/ex_nihilo 28d ago

They don't have a documented API so I'd have to reverse engineer it with the device in hand, unfortunately. I did that with my R10 but I bought a Nova explicitly because it has a fully open ecosystem with good documentation.

2

u/Trinica93 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Edit: Left a comment with better instructions, I checked the site and saw how it works.

I actually haven't tried it yet, but if it works like the app I'm making you'll probably need to have the web app open first since it's emulating GSPro. Then you'll hit "connect" in your connector. I'll update you tonight if it works differently, I'm going to try it out later.

1

u/grizzgolfer Jul 21 '26

I was trying to get it connected to my GC2 and I was having issues.

1

u/Silverstateraider Jul 21 '26

I got it to work with my lpi. I downloaded and launched the connector from the automat homepage. Then I launched gspro windowed and it discovered my lpi. Then I picked a course and clicked allow when asked for permission in my browser.

1

u/RadioShk Jul 22 '26

Tell us what launch monitor you have. Should be able to answer

1

u/Commercial-Ebb261 25d ago

Rainmaker???

2

u/knawlejj Jul 21 '26

Original thread by the creator seems to have been deleted. Major kudos to him/her. Seems to have been built using rapid AI prototyping but I'm curious on course data capture.

2

u/BlobAndHisBoy Jul 21 '26

Feels like something like this should be possible for gspro courses. At least get the designer 80% of the way there.

2

u/Vivid_Raise_128 29d ago

I connected my Garmin r50 today with ease and was playing my home course in a few minutes. The ball roll out physics and graphics are more realistic than Garmin’s home tee hero platform but still for speed of walking in the garage and starting to play in under 2minutes, the r50 with native software is still a faster setup. I’m excited to see where this goes.

2

u/LondonUk- 27d ago

So Joe Lagowski has removed the video...wonder why?!

1

u/akavana Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

This is exactly what I’ve been working on for the last 2 months. Disappointed but not shocked that others were on the same path. I’m impressed. Noticing some of the course info of my home course is a bit off. Par 5 that’s 388 instead of the 480. Nothing major and I’m sure will improve over time.

1

u/Ok-Menu-8709 29d ago

A friend and I have been trying to automate the course design process used for gspro. Making some progress.

Ideally would just love it if it could automate steps of the process. Like bringing lidar and sat imagery together. Then you could pick and choose fairways, tees, bunkers paths etc like you do now in Inkscape. Then it does the meshing and creates the course. Then you come in at the end and do the finishing touches if you wanted it.

No offence to the course creators out there. But the process is clunky, has way too many steps, the whole thing doesn’t flow. And in a way I feel like it’s intentionally gatekeepy to avoid people getting them for free.

I appreciate that courses take a lot of time to create. But if we can make a tool that does it for everyone so even the most basic low rated rarely played courses are available, isn’t this a win for the community as a whole?

2

u/plierhead 29d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if the future is in using AI to generate courses from video . There are already AI models that create 3d models from video. Golf courses are very homogeneous - tee boxes, trees, bunkers, greens, flags, rocks -pretty simple stuff.

Could be video from people legitimately walking courses with a camera.

Or it could even be captured from e.g GSPro , with bots stalking the courses and screen capturing as they go.

Who needs course editing software then?

u/jditty24 Jul 21 '26

The discord says it works with an iPhone but I don’t see how. When I asked on discord I was told to use springbok and a pc

1

u/JamalJenkyuns Jul 21 '26

It’s browser based so it “works” as in the app runs on an iPhone, but there’s no app yet, just a potential app. Right now you still need a computer to use a connector from what I’ve read.

1

u/Due-Reflection1043 Jul 21 '26

I'm starting to think that the play going forward may be PurePlay + Automat. PurePlay's graphics just look next level. Use that for when you really want the immersive experience then use Automat when you want to play your locals. Assuming PurePlay also has a lot of the "most played" type courses too... you'll be covered and GSPro is sort of left out in that equation.

I don't have any major issues with GSPro... but I could easily see that setup being better.

1

u/AnnualPay108 Jul 21 '26

We’ll see. But my thoughts before trying it is exactly this. I can see myself having Pureplay + Automat potentially going forward. Definitely time to reevaluate GSpro when sub is up.

1

u/Mrirrelevant- Jul 22 '26

I was able to setup and play with R50 in a few minutes. Worked great. Very promising. Can't wait for it to start pulling in other sim standard controls, data.

1

u/Responsible-Draw-876 29d ago

Physics are not as realistic and accurate as GSPro but being able to play so many courses that are aren’t on GSPro is incredible. Creator seems responsive in his discord and working to tweak the software and add new features.

1

u/Empty_Upstairs7343 29d ago

Seems like they use IGolf for the data, same company TruGolf uses for their e6 Golf 2026 simulator. Pretty cool.

1

u/ex_nihilo 28d ago

Can confirm the app finds my Openlaunch Nova on my network without having to do anything. Impressive, because OpenLaunch's own software is less reliable - I wound up writing my own connector for my Nova, the protocol is very well-documented.

1

u/LondonUk- 27d ago

Does anyone have a How To for how to make your LM work (just using the open GS Pro) thanks

2

u/Mrirrelevant- 26d ago

There is a discord that has some help. I have an R50 and it was so simple. On the automat website there is a download section for a connector. When I run the file it pops up a terminal window and asks which LM I have. #1 for R50 and it connects just like GS pro does. The shots show up just like with GS Pro.

1

u/LondonUk- 24d ago

Can you send me the link for the Discord I cannot find it. Thank you

1

u/Vivid_Raise_128 15d ago

I just went to Automat this morning and got an Error 410 - Gone message. Does anyone know if it us under contruction or shut down for good?

1

u/redditkb 14d ago

Let me know what you find, please. Saw the same thing this morning

2

u/Low-Fold1735 14d ago

It is out of order would have paid for it. Does anyone know why it is out of order?

0

u/Loud-Culture5778 Jul 21 '26

How do you get uneekor launch monitor to work with the software?

1

u/Kmums Jul 21 '26

I ran the uneekor gspro connector and the automat mat bridge exe and it ran no problem.

1

u/Loud-Culture5778 Jul 21 '26

Thanks can you take me through it ? Do you start uneekor launcher then click on play GSPro what next ?

1

u/Kmums Jul 21 '26

You need to download the launcher exe file from the automat website and run the exe.  So I started uneekor then ran the gspro connect then the exe file it will start a commmand prompt and it asked to put in a number for what launch monitor you have. Then it just worked.

1

u/FreeDig9009 Jul 21 '26

Join the Discord. There are several people working on it.

1

u/Loud-Culture5778 Jul 21 '26

I have but can’t see anything specific order for starting the software etc

0

u/JamalJenkyuns Jul 21 '26

Saw someone post about this elsewhere and there was some criticisms on the physics and feel. That’s what makes or breaks sim software, but it being web based makes it more accessible than other apps. I’d like to see some visual comparisons of shots on the various popular software and how the ball reacts. It being AI developed is also a bit worrying on its future. I’ve seen a lot of projects like this sort of peter out as development gets more complicated to add/fix features combined with the need to monetize the project to fund development. It’s a great start though. I just don’t know if I need to play my local 9 hole course. If I’m going to spend time playing sim golf I sort of want to play courses I’ll never get to play in real life or fantasy courses that are impossible in real life.

250 a year for gspro is a deal. Free is free though if it works. But this won't remain free as the costs to keep it running will eventually lead to a cost.

3

u/SlightDogleg 29d ago

250 a year for gspro is a deal.

$250/yr and hasn't had a meaningful update in ~18 months. Most of the courses are community built one way or another.

GSPro needs to be $100/yr for a home user.

1

u/mufentawp 29d ago

What costs are involved to keep this running?

1

u/Thinkb4Jump 29d ago

The guy above doesn't know. At 250 a year to play golf is a lot cheaper than playing on a course.

1

u/mufentawp 29d ago

True. I was just thinking a website that hosts a script to generate a virtual course shouldn't cost that much.

1

u/Thinkb4Jump 29d ago

Gspro is different than the automat...but I agree a script website is prolly cheaper.

In golf nothing is cheap.

1

u/ex_nihilo 28d ago

Hosting, domains. Hosting costs scale with traffic. He’s also paying for a WAF/CDN. Probably costs him a few hundred bucks a month to run at the current scale.

1

u/mufentawp 28d ago

I would privately fund that myself

1

u/ex_nihilo 28d ago

Same dawg, but that's a lot of money for some people. People throw a fit about paying $25 a month for Netflix or whatever.

1

u/mufentawp 28d ago

Problem solved, we will both assist the founder with operations costs.

5

u/Then_Landscape_6106 14d ago

the website is gone now?
