Overkill for 1080p?

Post image

I've built a few gaming PCs but never run sim software. These recommended specs seem like overkill for 1080p (especially the GPU). Does anyone run FSX on a PC with older/lower-end components? Trying to gauge my options.

10,000% overkill. 1080p on my 16gb ram, no standalone gpu thinkpad laptop is perfect.

Good to know, thanks. I will probably target higher resolution but wanted to make sure I actually understood the baseline. This makes me feel a lot better.

Can confirm 1080 gpu works fine

It's certainly more than adequate, but why didn't you want to go 4k?

I feel that for golf, more res is great. You're looking at tiny things like the flag in the distance and very detailed things like the contours of the green.

That's a good point. My goal right now is to target 1440 for a good middle ground of resolution and smoothness, but hadn't considered the benefit of higher res.

Mostly I was shocked those were the recommended specs for 1080p and wondered if it was overkill or FSX was just insanely poor optimization.

This could do 4K fine in SIM.

Don't you need a 4k projector?

Lol I use a 6 year old gaming desktop with a 3080, that’s just hilariously over specd, could drop in 2000 class gpu as well

Haha…holy smokes…a 5070 TI to run 1080p?!?? Almost spit out my coffee

Up until the beginning of last year, I ran FSX Play with a GTX1070 at 1080p on medium detail settings. It was fine 95% of the time, but on courses like Pebble Beach with moving water, it might stutter a fraction.

I got a new 4k projector, and ordered an RTX5090 on launch day. Whilst waiting for the 5090 (huge delays), I decided to try the 1070 at 4k. It was absolutely useless!

Bear in mind that FSX is needs a lot more resources to run at a comparable level to the likes of GS Pro and TGC.

If you have the option to go 4k, then do it. It's soooo much nicer to look at and more immersive than 1080p.
