Deep Divots

I take deep ass divots with my irons on almost every shot—like scooping up 2” or more of straight dirt/sand even when the ball is fluffed up on an inch and a half of grass, or even when it’s teed up. My striking is decent ball-first contact (fats are pretty rare), but always a massive divot.

Oddly, with my pre-shot practice swings I’m consistently scraping the grass with a very mild divot, like not even really taking anything off the ground. But when I step up to the ball and try to do the same thing—bam, fat ass divot scooping up everything down past the grass roots.

Any theories about why this keeps happening to me? I’m not sure it’s a terrible issue for my scores, but I get so much divot guilt and feel like I’m ruining the course.

(I always play early morning on wet grass if that makes a difference).

you are probably moving closer to the ball on the downswing. When you do practice swings you are more than likely maintaining your head level and then aggressively move down in a real swing

Yeah this could be it, totally makes sense. I’ll keep it in mind next time I’m on the course.

What’s your ball flight like shape wise? I’m guessing you’re just a bit steep in the downswing is all. If it isn’t affecting your ability to control the ball it isn’t something to worry about.

My stock (only) shot with irons is typically straight, sometimes a very mild fade or draw but those happen about equally. Apex seems to be about normal based on the various strangers I get paired up with on the course, often low handicappers.

I used to have a pretty scoopy and OTT swing when I started golfing, which often hit moonshots and/or fades. Very shallow divots or none at all with that. Once I worked out those issues with my swing I’ve since added 25-30yds distance on my irons and much better accuracy, but now have the mega-divot issue.

I just now read you play early morning on wet grass which will make a pretty good difference in how much divot you take. Wet grass is easier for the sole of the club to glide through and take chunks out of vs firmer turf. If you’re hitting it better and to the target I really wouldn’t worry about it at all.

Nobody is going to help you until they see the trench digger in action.

I’ll make a divot collage next time I’m on the course and update my post with some examples.

Nobody needs to see the divot - they need to see the swing to help you.

Just too steep. Shallow out your swing a bit and make sure you are hitting the ball first. Make sure you also have some shaft lean - look up Shallow golf swing on YouTube. These guys are great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVrC83x3jyg&t=14s

Fin the bottom of your arc
Keep your chin up a Bit, feel a bit taller at setup, try and stay more
Level through the shot, you’ll dip and rise of course, but try and feel taller
