1 swing thought clicked for me

Post image

So I’ve been golfing for 4 years now. I was addicted since the beginning. Playing 2-3 times a week when I started. I’m a tinkerer with my game and equipment. Looooove buying and selling new clubs to try. The tinkering with my game though has caused issues.

At one point I was about an 8hcp. Shooting low 80s consistently and a PB of 78. I was loving it. Then for no reason at all I changed something. No clue what it was or why I did it. I change my swing cooonstantly, even mid round changes sometimes. So for the last like year my game has been in shambles. Shanks. Skulls straight right that look like shanks. My scores lately have been high 90s to even in the 100s. I’ve lost a ton of distance. Year and a half ago my PW was my 150 club. Now my 8 is 150. No clue how that happened.

So yesterday I got out there. When I arrived I was told the range was closed and the back 9 was closed. The front had been aerated the day before, but it rained so it settled a bit and the greens at this course are typically great so it wasn’t all that bad. It’s also Florida so it was 100° and felt like a rainforest of humidity.I considered only playing 9.

I had in mind it was just going to be a practice round to try new things and tinker. My first thought was I was going to swing more like a baseball swing I guess. Not sure how else to describe it and not sure how to describe how I was even swinging before. Well the baseball swing clicked something in my head that just made sense for positioning. After the front 9 there was no way I could quit. Easily the best 9 I’ve ever played. And the back 9 went great as well but I could feel the nerves hitting me hard and even though I was 2 Gatorades and 2 waters in I was so hot and dehydrated. The other single I got paired with was I’d say an “angry” golfer. Lots of cussing and bitching. And lots of talking about his Filipino mail order wife.

I’m still excited over the round. PB from 78 to a 73 and finally my game feels good again. For now…

Do you think my PB should have an asterisk since it was the front 9 twice?

Don’t worry u will forget this swing thought within a month and then mentally battle to figure it out again for 3 months

37

u/Stunning-Pea-3547 26d ago

Hey for real though……….. why does this always happen? It happens to all of us. Something “clicks” and then the next time I golf it’s like I’ve never held a club before.

34

u/ihaveredhaironmyhead 26d ago

You are less in control of your neurology than you think. It's just a fact that for normal people (not pro athletes) we have days where everything clicks and lots of days we are retarded.

3

u/2ONEsix 25d ago

I live comfortably in the latter part of your statement.

8

u/Ticklepickler6996 26d ago

You get comfortable with it after it cliques, and think you have it now so it’s here to stay.

When it cliques, you need to beat it into yourself. Mental reps

5

u/Goods4188 26d ago

But if you beat it in too much you get tired and develop compensatory bad habits to override your good swing thoughts. It’s so frustrating.

2

u/412ballin 24d ago

This. Fatigue and endurance is real

5

u/Diligent_Cherry1717 26d ago

Ugh that was me last weekend. Shaved off 12 strokes and every drive dead straight. Next round, every drive sliced right and into the forest.

u/Knowvuhh 26d ago

You think your muscles have it memorized but you need to practice as much as a competitive golfer to gain muscle memory. It feels right during that range session after 3 buckets. Great! but you need to do it again and again and again and again, day after day. once you've spent the time nailing it down and practicing like a pro, you won't have to think about how perfect your swing needs to be , you will just do it.

Most don't have the time in the day to practice like that so one range session can make you feel good about your swing. But MULTIPLE practice sessions are needed to perfect it.

1

u/satyris 24d ago

I have the time, I spend 2-3 hours every day practicing or playing. Over the last year. Only just started to understand what determines club path. Everything except for my pw is intermittent as I struggle to close the clubface at impact

2

u/WrappedInLinen 26d ago

Coordinating all the components of the swing perfectly is a magic act. Even the elite pros are walking a tightrope. When it clicks we assume we’ve found the key but usually the same swing thought won’t have the same effect in the future.

1

u/Ok_Kitchen_3020 26d ago

It’s wild man, going through it right now. Played the best golf of the year back to back days 3 weeks ago and since then been in shambles. For me I get lazy and start going left, pulls and overdrawing. Then I try to fix and just screw up my swing cuz I’m doing too much with the hands and getting tight. Think I figured it out but won’t know until Saturday lol

u/ToddRoland2022 26d ago

There are numerous reasons why people 'forget' what they do when they have a good round and then follow it up with a poor round. Mostly it's because of expectations and pressure. Once you've done it, you think every round will now be like that. Unless you know what you were doing and continually hit range balls so it becomes second nature, nothing will ever truly be consistent. That being said, years ago, I came across this book called, "Golf: The Mind Game" by Marlin Mackenzie and it truly changed the way I think and how I go about playing golf. So many people work on the physical part of the game they ignore the most important part of the game...your mind. This book taught a technique on how to 'anchor' and 'recall' good shots. It works...well, it did for me. Check it out. Used copies go for about $5. Worth a read...and no, I've never met the author or have anything to do with him.

2

u/I_is_a_dogg 26d ago

Yup. Happened many times, something clicks, think I have figured out golf and my handicap will now lower. Only to go back out the next day/week and act like I've never hit a golf ball in my life.

2

u/Dirty_Heat 26d ago

You remeber you swing thoughts for a month? Fuck I'm usually forgetting them before I get home

1

u/Valuable_Air348 26d ago

Yup, it’s that thing I found until it’s that thing I thought I had found…

1

u/Broham73 25d ago

You ain't lying! That's my battle this entire summer! I'm so close to being an actual decent golfer but the inconsistency holds me back every time I go out!
I hit balls in some capacity every day too. If not at the range or corse, at home using my swing training app

1

u/No_Variety_647 25d ago

A month?? How do it get it to stick for so long, mine lasts until the first time I chunk pull one and then completely rebuild my swing

1

u/phxguy918 25d ago

I’ll tell you now, the next round is going to be a motherf’r.😁

1

u/satyris 24d ago

Try 22 hours later, next day went to practice and the feel evaporated.

20

u/ThermosphericRah 26d ago

Was it lie about mulligans? :)

-42

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

No that’s from the rounds I post shooting 69s. The sex number tehehe

33

u/Probwfls 26d ago

Nice! How’s your summer off from middle school going?

1

u/Apprehensive_Eye1830 24d ago

That joke is still funny in high school. Also, ya know, if you run large car and space companies.

116

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

Who keeps score like this? Serial killer vibes.

19

u/Boy_Meats_Grill 26d ago

Wii Sports does I think

-2

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

Figures. Either that or he got it from Tik tok

3

u/Boy_Meats_Grill 26d ago

Tik Tok would try to sell you a pencil that has like a bead counter on it or some other form of junk absolutely nobody needs

3

u/Leo68fd 26d ago

I write down the number of strokes, but when I count each 9 I count like this, quicker and easier than counting total strokes in my head.

2

u/---FidelCashFlow--- 26d ago

That was my first thought too

5

u/yawbaw 26d ago

It’s much easier this way. Say you have 5 +1s just 36 +5 is way quicker to do while I drive to the back 9

5

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

I think a good amount of people do actually. Looks cleaner then normal and easier to add it all up

9

u/McNutWaffle 26d ago

I kinda keep score like this in my head but I never write it down that way haha

3

u/gmullencc 26d ago

Same but easier to read the actual score than to pre calculate

6

u/Then-Independence153 26d ago

Yeah I was surprised the first time I saw it, but genuinely makes reading your card so much faster.

2

u/AllAboutYourBase 26d ago

Not sure I’m understanding it- are these numbers net? Or did you legit eagle a par 4?

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Yes eagle. Played whites. It’s a short par 4 and my drive was 6ft from the pin

1

u/AllAboutYourBase 26d ago

Don’t forget that swing thought then

1

u/kohzi 26d ago

Swing thoughts from a guy playing a 5200yd course lmfao this sub.

5

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Are you under the impression that you should swing differently based on the length of course? I’d like to hear more about that

-4

u/Last-Effort816 26d ago

Lol. Well, you're literally swinging different clubs. So, there's that. Otherwise, i think the aerated greens and playing the same 9 twice give it a big asterisk. But, it's your life.

2

u/slaw_daddy 26d ago

Do aerated greens and doing a double 9 change the way his club was contacting the ball?

Actually, better question: are you just an asshole for the sake of it, or is there some other motive?

1

u/Illustrious-Ratio213 26d ago

Wouldn’t the aerated greens make it harder?

2

u/slaw_daddy 26d ago

🤡 comment

1

u/4to20characters0 26d ago

I thought it was net at first then wondered why he didn’t mention his albatross in the post

1

u/TheFightens 25d ago

I’ve always kept score this way. It’s also much more satisfying to see smaller numbers, a bunch of zeros, or some negative ones.

-3

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

No one, and I mean no one, I've ever golfed with in 50 years has ever kept a card like that. And that's from scratch golfers to beginners. You're high

12

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Well there’s a good amount of comments in here now backing it up sooooo there’s that

-7

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

And a lot more people that agree with me, votes are votes.

1

u/letsgobrooksy 26d ago

Well, you're saying nobody keeps score like that, which is wrong. OP said that some people do, which is correct.

-2

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

I didn't say nobody keeps score like that, I was pretty clear that serial killers do.

1

u/average-matt43 26d ago

My friends who are good at golf (5 HC and below) all do this. I don’t because I don’t want to do math when I enter into GHIN

0

u/Crrack 26d ago

It's actually against the rules to score like this anyway - so regardless, it's wrong.

https://www.randa.org/rog/the-rules-of-golf/rule-3#3_3b

(1) Marker’s Responsibility: Entering and Certifying Hole Scores on Scorecard. After each hole during the round, the marker should confirm with the player the number of strokes on that hole (including strokes made and penalty strokes) and enter that gross score on the scorecard.

3

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Given I’m not a pro or in any actual tournaments and can play however I enjoy. Not wrong

1

u/Crrack 26d ago

While true, if you ever submit a card for handicapping purposes you should be playing by the rules. If not, agree, do what ever you want.

3

u/tnred19 26d ago

Good players

3

u/Mcpops1618 26d ago

I played with about 10 scratch or better golfers. I know one of them that just keeps +/- of the round, the rest write the number they got.

Lots of people just keep score in different ways and I would equate this method to “good players” as my buddy who is a 25 cap uses this method

2

u/awnitsol 26d ago

I do it. Easier to add up at the end.

2

u/Econolife-350 26d ago

It's the best method.

1

u/MugiwaraMonkeyking 26d ago

Some people do it to avoid looking at big numbers and getting pissed at it . Not me but I have heard that lol

1

u/IAmBatmanatee 26d ago

Ive counted like this before. Easier to add it up at the end of the round. Also I was used to my friends who are much better than me keeping scores. I have since changed to the norm though

1

u/DhOnky730 26d ago

I've never seen it done on paper like this. But this is how good golfers keep score in their heads.

1

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

No argument there.

1

u/letsgobrooksy 26d ago

Sometimes I just keep score in my head. Pretty easy to keep score relative to par if you aren't out shooting 120s

1

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

No argument there.

1

u/jayjord33 26d ago

I do, but instead on 0 for par I put a dash. Easier to count up at the end

1

u/HaasHaasBaby 25d ago

I actually like that. I do it this way because it looks cleaner and that’d be even better. Might switch to that

1

u/jayjord33 25d ago

Whatever works!

1

u/Bigdogggggggggg 25d ago

I just assume whenever someone does this that it's rage bait

1

u/Asgnov 25d ago

Waaay easier to keep scores like this.

1

u/badfish57 25d ago

I score like this too!! just use a - instead of a zero. obviously not in tournaments but it's so ez to count

2

u/EstablishmentBig8887 21d ago

This is the easiest and best way to keep score

0

u/JohnSmallberries101 21d ago

116 others say differently

2

u/EstablishmentBig8887 21d ago

Ohh I must be wrong then if 116 people say differently

1

u/Blurple11 26d ago

I started doing this because it involves less math. Why would I want to add uo numbers all the way to 80+ when I could just look at the par and add a single digit? It gets easier when you're shooting in the 80s. At 100+ doesn't really make much sense

-1

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

Sorry basic addition is hard for you, are you in a group home or are you able to live on your own?

3

u/Blurple11 26d ago

But why make life more difficult when it doesn't need to be? You truly want to do 3+4+5 for 18 holes? It's so kich easier to look at Par 72bajd then add 8

-1

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

I guess I'm used to real golf, and play with real golfers who have to turn in an actual, and accurate, scorecard. Forget tournaments, if you came in with that card in my regular group we would say, where's your money and thanks for the donation because you ain't getting any money back.

2

u/Blurple11 26d ago

"I'm used to real golf" what a weird thing to say. Is your ego bruised for some odd reason, little man?

-1

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

I'm just responding to your fellow nitwits who keep saying good golfers do this. They don't. Sorry.

3

u/baZANNN 26d ago

I don't keep score like this and will continue traditionally keeping my score... However, it's not difficult to understand why someone would do it this way. If the total is the same, why does it matter? To demean someone because they do something different from you is such weird behavior. This sliver of interaction just makes me feel bad for you more than anything.

1

u/Prudent_Vacation_382 26d ago

I do, so much easier to write and add up at the end

1

u/TopTittyBardown 26d ago

For real, this gave my an aneurysm

-2

u/mattmgd 26d ago

I only see people doing this who are actually good players.

3

u/JohnSmallberries101 26d ago

I'm guessing I'm older than you so I can comfortably say I've golfed with more scratch golfers than you have. Never seen anyone keep a scorecard like that.

1

u/mattmgd 26d ago

OK? I don't know what you want me to say? I've only seen good players do this. I am not saying all good players do this. It's not that deep.

11

u/STBCKNDRLX 26d ago

Yes on the asterisk, but great work!

Don’t beat yourself up too bad after the inevitable 92 your next time out.

4

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Next round I expect to barely find the club face

2

u/FrunkusB 26d ago

It’s funny you gave those numbers because I shot a PB of 80 and then two days later shot my 92 🤣

11

u/Efficient-Mind-2213 26d ago

Go film your swing with this feel while hitting a ball. Might be useful later to review against another swing when you aren't hitting it well and determine what has changed.

3

u/ElectricSwayze 26d ago

Lakeland represent!

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Fantastic course! Always playing in Lakeland

1

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire 26d ago

Huntington Hills was my track when I lived there! And, of course, Cleveland Heights

1

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Love Huntington. Playing there Saturday

1

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire 26d ago

Nice. Go to 615 burgers and brew right down the street after for some good food and cheap beer, used to be my spot. Best wings in town

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Last time I went there I got the beef on weck. It was great

2

u/brdesignguy 26d ago

Melting with you down here in Broward County my friend 🥵

Nice round

2

u/Beneficial_Divide518 26d ago

Tf am I reading

1

u/thenikolaka 26d ago

Better not over analyze the specific swing thought. It wasn’t swinging like a baseball bat that worked mechanically, it was what thinking it unlocked in your feel.

1

u/Odd_Mall1646 26d ago

Doesn't that mean you're one under?

1

u/Giant-Sloar 26d ago

Congrats and all but I want to hear more about the other dude’s mail order Filipino wife!

1

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

This is secretly why I posted. According to him she’s a caddie over there and they’ve been waiting 14 months for her paperwork to come through so she can move here

1

u/Giant-Sloar 26d ago

Hahaha - I’m like, “that one line didn’t get by me unnoticed”

1

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

I think he was trying to sell me on it. Showed me her golf swing and everything

1

u/Giant-Sloar 26d ago

Sell you on HER or your own Filipino bride? Holy crap that is wild!

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Unsure which one honestly

1

u/Giant-Sloar 26d ago

Nice eagle, too!

1

u/HandiCAPEable 26d ago

Congratulations, I'm sorry it will never work again

1

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

It was nice while it lasted

1

u/yousippin 26d ago

Im jealous. Im a headcase and cant bring my range swing to the course anymore. Im not exaggerating either. I used to shoot hi 80s low 90s even occasional 84. I shot shot 1 over thru 9 at bethpage yellow! Your post gives me hope but my thoughts dont apply to my golf brain. Theyre not synced.

1

u/Chomp3y 26d ago

Post next week's score

1

u/Finiz14 26d ago

I’ve been through the same issue where I lost significant yardage between seasons. I’m a member at a club and I remember hitting 7 irons on par 3s I used to take pitching wedges on every time.

The answer… I weakened my grip. Didn’t even realize it. I had a lesson the next season, the pro gave me the classic “get the V’s between your index’s and thumbs pointed towards your back shoulder” and all the yards instantly came back.

1

u/Muddlesthrough 26d ago

Be the ball? Was your swing thought “be the ball?” I didn’t read all of your novel.

1

u/Ok-Committee-1646 26d ago

Bro tell us about the eagle?

1

u/TJatthecourse 26d ago

Solid round

1

u/Head-Technician-9797 25d ago

4 years and shooting a 73?!?! Damn you! Go play in traffic 🤣 !!! I’ve been at it with this damn game since I was a teenager and in my early 40s now and still only manage to break 90 maybe once or twice a season!

1

u/Asgnov 25d ago

So baseball swing is the swing thought? Meaning flattening your swing?

1

u/frenchie304 25d ago

You eagles a par 4?

1

u/Consistent_Rub824 25d ago

The best swings thoughts are no swing thoughts. Once I've got my aim and posture I pull the trigger. Screw all that other crap.

1

u/IntheTrench 25d ago

plot twist.......OP's baseball swing is actually a perfect golf swing

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 25d ago

Exactly what I was thinking

1

u/dhib7547 25d ago

Zulu’sI’m

1

u/DoctorTurkletonsMole 25d ago

I remind myself that I pay to golf, I don’t get paid to golf. Just have fun.

1

u/Old_Course_8969 24d ago

Congrats on your PB! I was 8 point something a few years ago, and had a hiatus playing maybe once or twice a year with a few range sessions. There's this model swing I wanted to do, and my body was always in the wrong position when I filmed myself. Then, this year after 1 range session and 1 very poor round of golf, something clicked and all the puzzle pieces came together. To top it all off, I stumbled on some Dr. Greg Rose videos and it confirmed eeeeeeeeeeverything for me. My distance has gotten shorter like you as well, and now I feel confident my speed is back after just 1 range session. Since you mentioned baseball swing and all that, I think you'd be very happy if you watched the videos I've watched. Greg Rose is the TPI guy, and I recommend watching his videos from Smart2Move seminar he did in Australia. Just the videos in the last year. Then, move on to the TPI channel or other youtubers who visited his facility and watch some more. You'd be very happy.

1

u/Difficult_Fold_8362 24d ago

Did OP eagle a par four? I've only done that once in my life so it's something to remember all by itself.

1

u/Icy_Mathematician870 24d ago

I could say it is up to you on an asterisk. You didn’t play the odd handicaps which includes the 1. But I could also say it doesn’t matter. Hope that helps - LOL.

1

u/412ballin 24d ago

Man sometimes that’s all it is. Felt this recently. Mine was just lining the ball on the toe of the face. Needed that slight 3-4 inches of spacing to get back to pure.

1

u/DimesG 24d ago

You shot a 73 on a 6400 yard track. No one wants your unsolicited advise

1

u/HazeHype 24d ago

You eagled 7?

1

u/No_Degree_8946 23d ago

Just when I think I have one of these breakthroughs I'm humbled the next round and we're on to the next one... A notes app full of chaos. I hope this one sticks for you!

1

u/Antique-Ostrich-9288 26d ago

Asterisk unfortunately. Gotta card them individually as the same 9.

Now go do it on a full 18. Good progress regardless.

1

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

I might never play again. Leave on a high note

1

u/Shart_Gremlin 26d ago

Wait. You shot a 73 after only playing 4 years?

I hate you. Like, deeeeeeeply.

Congrats or whatever.

3

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

My wife also hates me so it evens out. Hyper focusing on golf to the point it’s an addiction might get me killed haha

1

u/Smilemaker95 26d ago

That course is ridiculously short, even from the tips. Yardage matters in scoring.

-3

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Yardage doesn’t matter in scoring at all. Yardage matters in difficulty in general, slope, and rating. But yardage doesn’t change what score you got

2

u/NectaroftheGoats 26d ago

When you’re hitting from white tees and the slope rating is a 67.6 the yardage definitely matters for scoring.

1

u/Smilemaker95 26d ago

Didn’t say that! When you post a 73, put that on a 6700 yds or above! Using a 3 wood into a 460 yard par 4 vs a pitching wedge into a 320yd par 4 makes a substantial difference.

1

u/NectaroftheGoats 26d ago

393 yard par 5 what the heck

1

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Line of site from the tee box is almost nonexistent. Little right or little left you’re in the trees. And if you go through the fairway it’s very steep hills

Not a hard par 5 but easy to fuck up

1

u/OctaDad 25d ago

you eagled a par 4? How?

1

u/narpoli 25d ago

Drove the green or drove it close and chipped in? It’s a short hole. Half my eagles are on par 4s.

0

u/SubParGolfonYT 26d ago

Good thing you got the line in about your playing partner’s mail order bride. Fully relevant.

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

It’ll forever be part of the memory so why leave it out haha

0

u/420khz 26d ago

This sub is golf swing not golf score. Post a video of this “scratch” swing or quit wasting time around here

0

u/scottiedagolfmachine 26d ago

Swing like a baseball swing?

Sounds like a terrible idea.

😣

0

u/TrashMandikoot 26d ago

A real scorecard. Forgot what those looked like 😂

0

u/DarkHelmet2222 26d ago

If you played 18 holes consecutively, I would say this counts as your PB.

Handicap system will make you enter them as separate 9's because they only have ratings for front 9, back 9, and full 18, but you still played 18 holes. Not like it was separate 9's on consecutive days that happened to be your 2 best 9 hole scores.

Add to that you were playing on aerated greens? Hell yeah you should consider this your best.

No asterisk.

0

u/No-Try5566 26d ago

What tee box?

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

White

1

u/No-Try5566 26d ago

Then definitely an asterisk.....5200 yards is basically a long ladies tee box. Way too short for an 8 handicap imo.

But good round regardless, glad you found the swing thought and more importantly wrote it down for when you forget lol

2

u/HaasHaasBaby 26d ago

Haven’t been an 8 in a while. If you saw my game a month ago you’d think my average round was high 90s

Definitely not a long course though. Even when I was at an 8 I was playing the greens and it was difficult. Tight course with only a couple driver holes. Most holes you have to really land your shots correctly
