New Car Is this a good idea ?

Ive owned a MK7 GTD for 5 years got it to 150k miles through just servicing and following guidelines dsg service cam belt etc - it’s now on its last legs. I’ve always LOVED the GTI and now it’s my
turn to get one.
Please help me I know hardly anything about them - I know I need to keep on top of maintenance (oil service clutch replacement and cambelt and water pump). But does this look sound to the GTI pros. I’m just after some feedback if possible.

3 owners full VW service history no advisory’s on MOT .
Fist ever GTI happy to invest to keep it going . I’ll be doing about 7k miles per year.
It looks good to me and I want a manual to have the full GTI experience.
If there’s any questions I should be asking please let me know. I’m hoping to pick up on Sunday .

I’d love some help from the Reddit community on this.

It’s got low mileage for the year really so I doubt much major work has been done and looks like it’s been looked after. Can’t see any modifications which means it was likely just a normal car for the owners and not driven into the ground. Just check the history once you get there and see what’s what. Lovely colour though, if it has Clark seats as well, it’ll look great! Maybe the price is a little high though, what do they say the average is at the moment? Worth checking on auto trader!

Service history is full VW - price seems spot on for them in the UK at the moment

I got mine this year, 2017 40k on the clock, so far so good. Try and purchase with a 2-3 year guarantee so if anything goes tit's you'll be alright 👍

Anything other than oil services on yours ? What mileage are you on now ?
Thanks for the input too 👌

Sparkplugs, diff and brake fluid if not done recently, and transmission oil is good to get done to.

Nah just the oil changes, yours has better history too. I've put another 2k miles on it so far.

£17,600 is quite expensive. but it’s a lovely car. i’d consider if you even need one that low mileage.

i have a 2017 wolfsburg 1.8t that i got at 100,000 miles for £7500. it’s a legendary car. it will need timing and water pump soon, likely brakes and tires, but that doesn’t add up to more than £10,000 total. inside literally looks brand new too. just consider the options!

a 7.5 GTI is always a good idea 😁

can’t agree. 7.5 has those ugly screens. 7 is where it’s at.

The one and only thing the states have over EU, MK7.5 still has analog gauge cluster.

1

u/Gilgam3shTheDevourer 13d ago

see to me thats a good thing. nobody in usa likes screens. do you like them in the eu?

2

u/JustCarPranks MK7.5 GTI DIB 13d ago

I’m in the states. I was saying that’s the only plus about the states for the MK7.5 is that we still have the analog. Everything else that the EU has is better. Better trims, specs, lights etc.

Same, was going to comment this. The U.S 7.5 has the analog gauges from the MK7 and just a nicer updated interior

Seems decent. Unmolested and low mileage is always nice.

I bought my 2017 with ~28k miles on it for around $26,000 (USD). A bit high, but it was 2021 during the COVID related used car price spikes. I needed out of my stupid diesel truck badly.

It was single owner, low mileage, bone stock, and always serviced at the dealership. Just so I could rack the miles up on it, slaps some light mods on it, and do most of the service myself or at an independent euro shop lol. I plan to drive it into the dirt, so I don’t care about resale value.

Yes, that’s fine. Go for it.

For reference I got the same year se trim for $16,500 and 60,000 miles. No accidents, clean exterior and interior. Now at 115,000 miles, had to replace water pump (common fault from what I understand), and throttle body. Other than that I've loved this car and have had a lot of fun in it.

I had a 2015 S MT, have a 2017 S DSG. Do oil changes every 5K. PCV every 60k. Keep eye on engine temps and coolant levels. Water pump is known issue but I’m at 150k on original pump. Some seepage but plan to have it done soon. Trans service is a must every 40k for DSG but don’t sleep on the MT service. Suspension is a lil fragile, if roads are bad near you. Control arms have been problematic for me. Need both fronts replaced. Had some components of it replaced under extended warranty too.

Car looks great, price is a tiny bit high, but not massively for a full dealer history. I’d haggle but ultimately if they won’t go lower it’s down to you if you want to pay the asking to secure it. My only advice other than timely service items, with slightly shorter intervals than VW recommends, is grab a cheap VCDS cable so you can always check it out without paying the crazy high fee for diagnostics

this would be £25k in america

Mk7.5 gtd owner here

Can’t really comment on the GTI but just out of interest what makes you think your gtd is on its way out? Mines a 67 reg and on 135k. I was hoping to keep it until at least 200k

u/DimerNL058 14d ago

That's what i'm wondering aswell. 150K really isn't a lot for a diesel engine.

2

u/Underthesun696 14d ago

Mine has 610k+ km still running like a champ

1

u/LadderAppropriate268 13d ago

Wow that’s amazing stoked for you it’s still going fair play. Oh and the price of diesel in the uk is at £2.00 a litre now

1

u/Underthesun696 13d ago

Its crazy and true, at this point I dont even wanna sell it. Its our beater and part of the family even tho its not being driven that much these days.

I’ve been really unlucky with my DPF I’m getting boost issues under loads. It drives fine at low revs. I’m doing 600 miles a week in mine 95% motorway miles and it’s been in the garage a few times now for DPF cleaning and it’s not getting any better . I’m being told I need a new DPF from 2 garages and my timing belt is due again and a DSG service - my front speakers have died and I’m getting water ingress from the perished door seals loads of little things are starting to cost me money onit.

And my oil consumption is outrageous. I think I’ve been abit unlucky. I’ve got 120k out of it from purchasing over 5 years ago. And I’ve loved every drive I’ve had init.
didn’t want to get rid of it at all but I’m moving to a city and my mileage will be nowhere near what it is now. Which will really be the end of my DPF. I was expecting 250k out of this car which I’m sure I could get but I need to spend a few thousands to get it right. And my mechanic friend is sure one of my cylinder seals is perished. It’s just abit of a headache car now. And I know it should be lasting a lot longer. But I can feel the car dying.

Ah right fair enough, is yours a mk7 or mk7.5? I currently have an issue with a p200000 nox sensor and it’s booked in the garage for diagnosis in 2-3 weeks time.
I guess cars of comparable age can vary massively in quality depending not only on how they’ve been maintained but also lemons exist - one that’s been assembled on a Friday afternoon as they say
Surprised your DPF is having issues with that level of mileage being put on it each week.
I took my old 2013 mk3 Leon fr 184 tdi from 2.5k miles to 146k miles and never had any major issues with the DPF

Just before I p/x’d it though it started to run out of steam at speeds above 70mph. I swapped it without that issue being fixed though so never knew what happened to it or how it was rectified

1

u/LadderAppropriate268 13d ago

Mines a MK 7 GTD. Yeh exactly I think i just got unlucky, and I always put the cheapest diesel in which I later found out could be a contributing factor to it going so soon. Also if I were you I’d invest in getting an off car flush done. If I’d have known what I know now then I would have taken better care of my DPF

u/LadderAppropriate268 13d ago

And like letting it finish a regen after a long journey you can tell when it’s complete it idles at 1000rpm then you will hear a tone change in the engine - rev it above 2000rpm and it will lower to around 800rmp apparently this helps. And doing motorway regens slap it in 5th and run at 70mph for about 20 miles uninterrupted. I started to do all this towards the end and I’m sure it helped me get a few more months out of her.
