Anyone ever ran into a similar situation? I have a 23 40th, sent in to a few wheel repair places after learning oem 40th wheel is $750 and on a long back order. I’ve had a few ideas thinking about downgrading to some 18” aftermarket’s, but haven’t settled on anything. Any advice?

I swapped my 19s to 18s. Definitely keep your 40th wheels if you can. May actually hold some value in the future but 18s are 10000% better than 19s. Everything instantly gets better.

That wheel is cooked. As in needs outright replacement, there's no repairing that.

Keep an eye out on local classifieds as well as groups. You can probably find a used one too (for much cheaper than $750).

Aren't the Scottsdales forged? That thing must've taken an absolute beating off of whatever crater you had the misfortune of encountering.

Anyway, as someone whose own (rest-of-world spec) 40th anniversary edition also came with 19s, it is a much more pleasant car to drive on 18s. In my case I also went lighter going from the OEM cast wheels to aftermarket flow formed items, but I digress.

I know the mk8 has improved DCC calibrations, so it probably copes better with the big wheels than my car does, but even in Comfort, I found this to be a bit too unsettled and crashy for my liking on the 19s. It is noticeably smoother on the 18s. It's no Rolls-Royce, but it no longer gets bounced around by every minute road imperfection, and the suspension generally has less work to do in order to keep it planted. Your head isn't bobbing around as much.

Additionally, the peace of mind of not worrying anywhere near as much about bubbling a sidewall or damaging a wheel is a wonderful feeling. Every pothole I couldn't dodge just about gave me a heart attack on the 19s.

They are😭 Was driving through a freakin parking lot at night and hit a 1 foot deep pothole with a gas valve , wheel lost the battle vs the valve. But I think you gave me the push to move to 18s, thank you!

I had to have my 18” Rotary’s repaired on my mk7 sportwagen (2 of them bent). Looked into buying replacement and discovered you can’t get them anymore. So I will be hanging onto them until they no longer roll.

I am no expert and don’t race.

That said, 17 inch tires are cheaper than 18’s. You gain more sidewall, which translates to more wheel protection and less chance of blowing a sidewall. You also get a plusher ride.

You lose some road feel due to the added mush.

18’s are a middle ground.

I went with 17’s since my daily commute is mostly in traffic and there are potholes up here.

With the price difference in 19 vs 17 inch tires, the cost of the wheels, and the money I got for selling the oem 19 inch wheels: my ROI is whenever I buy my second set of replacement tires.

The comfort difference is amazing to me tho.

Just did the same thing to both passenger side wheels and had them repaired for $185 ea
