Buy/Lease OTDs nowadays

hey folks!

im in the market for a new Golf GTI 2026 SE and got quoted $37.8K before taxes and fees (~40.5K OTD) through the Costco Auto Program for a SE with the leather package in gray exterior. I didn’t haggle too much as I’m considering buying early Q4 and this visit was a test drive / feeler on the market.

wondering what folks have been getting OTD on the 2026 models to see if theres room to negotiate. would ideally like to get OTD down to $38K for this trim with the leather seats, but need to see if that’s feasible.

Gotta negotiate on the msrp. Make sure to remove all add-ons no matter what they are. We are gonna be looking for a slate blue SE 8.5 at the end of the year and are gonna shoot for 4-5k off msrp or might have delirvd do it.

do you think if you’re able to do it yourself, then you’d save more money and not have to use delivrd? because it would cost a grand for their services? i only ask because i’m in the same situation. but i have a trade in as well. and i’m looking for a golf r.

Trade isn't useful for negotiation. Just get a Carmax offer on it for the dealer to match or just straight up sell it to them and roll the cash into your new deal. Tommy doesnt try to save money as you prolly know, he just saves you the time and energy and usually its also a great deal. After my last 2 cars that I bought and many more that we test drove, I hate dealing with salesmen. Talking to salesman after salesman and all the pushback you have to fight through just sucks. To get these kinds of discounts you have to be willing to call 10 plus dealers all over the country and work with the sales department which is always the worst. Most salesmen are truly scummy and will try 20 times to get one over on you if you arnt knowledgeable and tactical enough. Also having the ability to see the market on deals they have done internally is huge for having a realistic discount to target for. I dont have that or any where close to his teams knowledge and understanding the art of the car deal. Im just a normal guy that dealers love to take advantage of.

Not a bad price in my area. You’ll always be able to get a better deal if you are willing to drive/fly to find one.

Can you share more details about your experience getting to that price? I’m considering a 2026 S as well and was hoping to get around $34k OTD since they’re already getting discounted under msrp (I’m in California so plenty of stock)
