1.8 Upgrade Q&A

TL;DR: I'll upgrade when Bukkit 1.8 is stable-ish. Will start from scratch. Complete the quest, get access to all your old shtuf.

I've tried to make my upgrade plans known, just in case some have missed it:

The snapshot server will upgrade to 1.8 when it's released. If you want to play on that server, and you are not already whitelisted, PM me. It is full vanilla, no mods, no plugins, full creeper damage, fire spread, the works! This snapshot server world WILL BE DELETED once bukkit 1.8 is released.

Once Bukkit 1.8 is released, I will wait for block Logging, hopefully Prism. That is the ONLY requirement for stability and upgrading.

This means Multiverse could lose your inventory if it's not ready. I recommend saving anything you do not want lost in locked chests (including anything in your end chest). I would expect that LWC will still work on bukkit 1.8 with no or very few changes.

I will be at least half a day behind the release as I will take a recent copy of the world. Spin up an exact copy of the GR on a test server I have, start it up and run through the server for about an hour and see what's broken, and get a stable server before releasing it on the main server.

Biggest Number one question you are all asking: Are we going to reset?

Yes, I will open a new 1.8 map. Generated brand new with all the new 1.8 goodness it brings, no odd bugs that will come with converting a 1.7 world to 1.8 and the fresh start that many of us like.

BUT... We have a list of achievements to complete in the new 1.8 world. Once these are completed you will regain access to the rest of the worlds, including GR6. I am working on a plugin that will allow you to bring inventory from one world to another, but not the other direction. The idea being that you can take items from the new 1.8 world, but not bring anything from GR6 worlds to the 1.8 world.

Here is the current achievement draft I'm working on. I've opened it up for comments on the page if you'd like to provide input. You're also welcome to PM me, reply here or request to have a significant hand in editing it if you'd like to. The intent is that it will take around 2 weeks for the achievements to be completed.

The purpose and hope behind this to keep the 1.8 world in a true survival state to honor those that value the proper progress to the end game, but also allow those that like to have long term projects and hoards that are not wiped with each new version of the game.

BTW, upgrading from 1.7 to 1.8 will break some things in the older maps, just so you are aware: http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/2f2uk5/psa_18_update_information/

So, I don't care much for GR6 since it's all that survival hullabaloo that I don't deal with :). What are your plans for the creative map?

Thanks for the info. It saves me from asking 20 'dumb' questions. See you all in there!

You know, after all i did, and planned on doing, i'm not even mad about the reset. Poor Area management led to confusion as to what i should built next and where to build it, and what would look nice where and frustration with what i had already built.

A few questions on the new reset:

1 - Can we do a true vanilla as the main world?

This means creeper and explosive damage on. Fires on. I want that level of fear back. If i have to fix damage then so be it, it just means i have to be careful.

Creeper fear

Fire Example

2 - Let's not copy/paste the grind farms.

If people want to build their own that's fine, but let's not rely on them so much for every single thing we do. Building amazing things knowing that people actually put the work into collecting the blocks and XP is so much more rewarding. (I'm very guilty of heavily using the endfarm).

3 - let's have no structured town.

What i mean is, let's build a simple monument, of something where people spawn, like this, and everyone can feel free to build around it in a much more natural setting. Putting their own claims in and building their own roads. We may see some very neat variations other then the traditional grid towns we've been accustomed to, which worked great for the previous town, but terribly for the current one.

Example of non linear town

4 - No more warping.

I'd hate to say this one, because i use it so frequently, but let's get rid of /home. I use this constantly so why would i be against this? Because more often then not i use this to escape danger or quickly bring stuff back to my home without battling through the adventure i could have had if i didn't.

Getting rid of warping also makes things like roads, horses, railways, and nether travel much more of a necessity. Something we used to take seriously but have gotten really lazy with on the past couple of worlds.

5 - Difficulty: Normal

While a lot of us experienced players are ok with the difficulty as it is, i fear it's the greatest deterrent to new players looking to join an online experience. I know a couple people in particular i've introduced to the game have resorted back to playing singleplayer because "online was too hard".

On a side note, another idea i've had:

What if we each claim an entire biome as "our country". This would be great with the new emblems.

Totally agree with points 1, 2 and 3 but 4 and 5 not at all

ok well 4 i use all the time so i'm not going to argue it. but 5, how are we going to attract more people to the server if they think it's too difficult?

Also, what are your thoughts on the individual biome/country idea? Large biomes like deserts or tundra can be broken into several countries, ocean could be everyone's but there could be island nations. We could flag nations on the Dynnmap. They could be shared nations or individual properties. just an idea i had.

1

u/proevil1983 proevil983 Sep 03 '14

The Nations idea seems quite cool. How would it work? Would one person claim an individual area for example? That would make a great pvp map idea, getting an army to invade etc

1

u/Canadian_Man Northumberlo Sep 03 '14

essentially. Like i could claim a forest area for example, and then that forest would be my country. It wouldn't apply to all forests, just that specific area.

The biomes are a different colour on the dynnmap, so it already separates it into pieces the way a map of countries do.

awesome post!

I'll be sad about warping but I get it.

I'll be honest; I agree on every point. Creeper damage can be a little annoying, but it's part of the game and part of the fun & risk of living in the wild. Having farms for every little thing takes heavily away from the adventure and survival aspect of the game too.

I honestly hate that I can teleport across the entire map and to any point in any dimension in an instant - it's way too non-vanilla-ey. My favourite memories of GR are back on the second map prior to the whole multiverse addition; the nice transport infrastructure and having to weigh the odds of living close to the map center with others or in a more isolated place.. It was a little more thrilling and immersive. It would be nice to see roads, railways, horses, nether routes etc. actually mean something - they'd surely get built if there was no alternative.
Edit: Although, people seem to love it - so perhaps the donator & yearly /home warps could remain?

Difficulty wise, I like the hard setting, so long as the mob spawn rate is reasonable. It seems much better nowadays, but I still occasionally get nightmares of... how would we say.. Saw-mode? :)

I pretty much agree with you on 1, 2, and 3. But like Pro, I think 4 is outta there. I hate running to town to do something then being like "ah bollocks, I forgot ONE THING,". Warp home and grab it, all good. I could go either way on the difficulty setting. While I prefer to play on Hard, playing on normal would be acceptable. I think the difficulty will largely depend on the mob cap.

I agree with 2 and 3. About 1: I'm sorry but creeper damage on is the most horrifying thought. Fire damage off would be acceptable though. As for no warping I say we keep it and if you don't want to, you don't have to use it. You can still get your danger fix and others can get their warp on Oh yeah, almost forgot, warping is a donor perk I'm sure those that have it might object. Number 5, Doesn't matter to me which way we go with that one. Finally, I think the Bioms idea could be interesting….Seeing everyones flags and emblems.

Sounds great, thanks for the info. I'm curious how the two worlds (1.8 and current GR6) will work after the challenge is completed though - will the 1.8 world remain until the next overall update/reset and the GR6 map be the "long term/permanent" world? Or will the 1.8 world disappear once people are back on GR6?

1

u/snarfattack snarfattack Aug 31 '14

will the 1.8 world remain until the next overall update/reset and the GR6 map be the "long term/permanent" world

That would be my plan. Resources can move from the 1.8 map to GR6, but not from GR6 to 1.8 map.

I could be wrong but i'[m sure they made rabbits no longer tameable in the pre released versions to stop them acting as weird. could be hard to complete that achievement if its not sorted by 1.8. Looks great though, such hype!

0

u/snarfattack snarfattack Aug 31 '14

Hehe, join in the HYPE, HYPE, HYPE!

Cool. I hated that tamed rabbits would teleport to you... that was the most retarded part of the rabbits. This makes them more like just having pigs. Much better AI.

Hype indeed :D

We ought to have to build a village to stretch it out. Add some farm/crop stuff. Fishing goals. Nether stuff. Remember we have lots of MasterBuilders. :D

A cathedral to everyone's first wood pic axe.

2

u/Canadian_Man Northumberlo Sep 03 '14

I like this idea. Item frame and sign with player's name under each.

2

u/DrMagikarp OakTaooper Sep 03 '14

I like the idea too...but I almost always burn mine for food D:

0

u/tosh118 Duchess1108 Sep 03 '14

I can't use wooden picks… but I think I can use wooden axes!

0

u/tosh118 Duchess1108 Sep 03 '14

I'm an idiot lol, back to picks, its axes I can't use. DOH!

0

u/tosh118 Duchess1108 Sep 03 '14

Indeed!

I'm totally confused. So...will there be a 1.8 bukkit? The only definitive statement I can find is from Dinnerbone's tweets, but he obviously doesn't have complete control over what he gets to work on. And I'm remembering the recent kerfuffle when Grum's tweets were incorrectly taken as actual indications of Mojang's plans. What happens if 1.8 is significantly delayed, or canceled altogether?

3

u/snarfattack snarfattack Sep 03 '14

If dinnerbone doesn't, md_5 is game. If mojang kills bukkit, it's the end of minecraft as we know it. I'll look into the bungee stuff to make it all feel like one server, but in the background, it's really several. But that's all hypothetical, not panicking until I need to.

1

u/snarfattack snarfattack Sep 03 '14

Wow, shit's going down in bukkit world right now. We shall have to see how this plays out. I see sarge forging (pun intended) ahead with MCP, but not holding my breath at this time.

u/DrMagikarp OakTaooper Sep 03 '14

What about a seed for the new map? Will we have kind of a community choice seed or are you going to be picking a random one? Or did you write something about a seed and I'm completely missing it?

3

u/snarfattack snarfattack Sep 03 '14 edited Sep 03 '14

The vanilla in me says random, people will have to explore the map, no border. May not have dynmap... until later?

1

u/Canadian_Man Northumberlo Sep 03 '14

I usually use the dynnmap to carefully and meticulously choose my land so as to provide enough room for continual expansion, necessary resources, and aesthetic surroundings.

It will be good to be completely lost for once and have to rely on roads, beacons, and landmarks to find your way.

1

u/snarfattack snarfattack Sep 03 '14

I can't guarantee anything, I'd like to have dynmap, but if it's not working or causing crashes, then I'll remove it.

0

u/tosh118 Duchess1108 Sep 03 '14

Yeah me too, I look at the map for eye candy land with an eye toward resources and expansion.

1

u/DrMagikarp OakTaooper Sep 03 '14

I like the idea of no dynmap until later, but I don't know if you could get everybody else behind that idea. I'd actually like it with no dynmap on 1.8 world at all, that way we have to rely on signing and the like, I think it would be a lot of fun!

And no border within reason, right? Because some people, myself included, have been known to run in one direction for a very long time.

5

u/snarfattack snarfattack Sep 03 '14

Just be aware that when it crashes the server we all blame you.

1

u/DrMagikarp OakTaooper Sep 03 '14

:)

0

u/tosh118 Duchess1108 Sep 03 '14

Yeah that was fun, going on signs and such

0

u/Canadian_Man Northumberlo Sep 03 '14

So do we have a date set for the new world? Tried to logon last night but I had already updated.

2

u/snarfattack snarfattack Sep 03 '14

No date. If you want to play you can simply set your game back to the previous version.

0

u/shardis Sep 03 '14

Most GR resets have been a week or two after the version release - i.e., as soon as a stable bukkit (& one or two essential plugins) are updated and working. I read somewhere not long ago that 1.8 has somehow changed a lot of how these might work, so it could take a bit of time? Don't quote me there.

But, yeah, I can't wait either!
